Personally, I've always kept cleanliness, proper grooming, and health/fitness a high priority for myself despite being pretty much otherwise a total nerd of all things Japanese. If you ever had a conversation with me at a convention or at work I doubt you'd ever be able to tell I'm practically a hermit.

Not really. A person who was injured in a car wreck and partially paralyzed and then works their ass off and gets better is a hero. A firemen who risks life and limb saving people from a burning building is a hero.
You've never seen athletes ever referred to as heroes? They're people who inspire others to do better and often the more "heroic" ones are athletes who have overcome some kind of adversity or might be considered underdogs for some reason
Anyone can be a hero in anyone's mind, it doesn't need to be something huge that the general public sees as the norm, it can be anything as long as there is acknowledgement even if by only one person.
I'm disappointed the majorities of Americans still view anime as cartoon meant for kids, that's why I never associate these two together, anime is animation while cartoon was always known as just cartoon. Disney shamelessly used the word "animation" very much later after anime became well-known globally.
I admired his guy for openly displaying his treasure, why should we be ashamed of our hobbies? Liking anime, manga and games doesn't make us less of a human being.
