Japan’s newest female prison is to be painted pink to reduce any feelings of “oppression” its inmates might suffer during their unfortunate period of incarceration, prompting accusations of sexual discrimination against men.
In order to reduce staggering overcrowding in Japan’s female prisons, where 7 facilities designed to hold 3342 inmates are packed with 3440 prisoners and a shocking 2.9% overcapacity forces some women to share cells, Shikoku has received its first female-only prison.
Matsuyama Prison, in Ehime prefecture, has been converted into a women-only prison capable of holding as many as 83 inmates, and aside from the installation of nursing facilities and a gynecology unit features a unique innovation – cells and shared facilities have had walls and doors repainted from white to pink “in order to ease the feelings of oppression of inmates.”
The decision has aroused some umbrage online – although this being Japan few seem to have picked up on the patronising assumption that women are better off in pink environments in the first place:

they have actually tested this, and pink prisons significantly reduce inmate violence, both against fellow inmates and against guards. there has been a push from the psychology sector trying to get this normalized, and a number of prisons have been converted to all pink cells, though it is unfortunately not very common yet despite the evidence backing it up
if you want to talk about psychological victory, paining the wall dark blue would be more effective. deep blue is actually a demoralizing color, one that passifies opponents. they've found in fights that squaring off against a guy in red trunks leads to higher victory rate vs squaring off against a guy in blue trunks because red is an aggressive color, while blue is soothing.
same idea more or less, yeah, though i believe a number of colours were tested and pink seemed to reduce violence most significantly. not personally familiar with the dark blue thing, though if it has been tested several times i am sure that would help, though it would needed to be tested in specifically a prison context a number of times to be sure

For reference, check how fucked up the US prison system is (prison as an industry, highest prison population in the world, etc.). Then compare Norways system, for example, which is all about what I just mentioned and works almost perfectly.

Where did you get that number? About 24% of USA population is under 18. Unemployment rate is about 6%. Do people pay taxes from their pension? If not, you can add about 13% (65+). That brings the number to 43%.
In Finland, those numbers are 22%, 9%, 19%. And income from pension is taxable. Also, apparently there's ~38% more people getting pension than there are those who are over 65. Average pension is about 1500 euros, average pay is about 3100 euros.
Not to mention this is for a low-security prison which houses smaller time prisoners.
