Comment on Pink Female Prison “To Reduce Inmate Oppression” by Anonymous:

Before the industrial revolution, no one was allowed to earn money unless it was for their village/tribe/etc. Men and women alike were responsible for keeping their families alive and rearing children. This whole mentality that it’s about earnings is only recent, and the type of oppression you’re talking about was never in the collective psyche for very long.

Women were oppressed in that they were not allowed to do men’s jobs, whatever the society deemed those were. Much like men were not allowed to do women’s jobs. The actual oppression was that it was the men who largely determined what fell into what gender’s “jobs pool”. But it wasn’t even all men, it was “the men in charge”. You’ll note that often in pre-industrial times, women who were capable of doing what men weren’t were often still allowed (and encouraged) to do “men’s” jobs even if they were kept quite about it, lest the “men in charge” have the village burned down.

Stop applying modern gender oppression to all of history, because it only shows you are generalizing in foolish ways. It also undermines your credibility when you ignore that it was not only women who were oppressed in the ways you cite.
