So this is how KyoAni has gone? They think some fujoshit-baiting crap would solve their moeblob-pandering problems? They just made things even worse for themselves. In the end, this is just another generic series.
How exactly did they make things worse for themselves? Free! has sold far better than any other of their recent shows. Not as well as K-ON, but its definitely a contender.
You guys (or at least, those that like KyoAni's moe shows) should be glad about Free even if you don't like it - its going to be funding their moeblob shows for years to come. They've got Amagi Brilliant Park next season which looks more like their usual stuff, too.
It was Tamako Market that was probably their biggest flop. I dont really know why - i thought it was a cute show.
Tamako Market was indeed a cute show, but even among the moe shows, cute was *all* that it was.
The girl characters were fine, but none of them were developed very much -- including the main character. More time was spent on the bloody bird's quest than on the humans, which made it difficult to be interested in the human characters. Perhaps the Tamako movie addressed some of that.
Frankly, with TM, KyoAni got a bit lazy in the story and characterization departments, and it showed. At least it still was wonderfully drawn.
That makes sense I guess - still, I thought it was more interesting than K-On, which basically printed money (and still does).
Anyway the point was that KyoAni have made a LOT of money from Free so saying that it was a mistake or bad for them is pretty self-centered. If Free! actually was a giant flop I could understand being mad but seriously, them getting more money to make more shows can only be a good thing. Even if Free! gets more seasons, they're only going to air them during the summer because its the theme of the show, so that still leaves everyone else with 3 other shows each year (and again, thats only if they make more of it. In this season, everyone is in their final highschool year so if they did make more it would either have to be a prequel or some kind of university sequel).Plus summer season is blockbuster anime season so its not like you wont ever have nothing else to watch. The backlash about Free! seems to mostly come from nobodies who literally have nothing else to do.

All the female reactions to this episode so far that I've seen are along the lines of 'Makoto would make a great dad' or 'I would love a husband like Makoto who is so good with kids'. (well, that and the excitement over that new pink-haired guy, but he's irrelevant to the current discussion).
