Well, she's not the main character of the newest season, right? So yeah, side.
What you dickholes need to understand is, the nervegear and it's sequels allow to fullsense dive into the game, there is no monitor, no GFX card, no headset (besides the plastic brain controler), no nothing that would make it a VIDEO game: You feel, you smell, you TASTE the dirt, the blood, the iron. You see with your own eyes - or at least think you do.

She's not the one appearing in the episodes, true. She does take on much more importance later on in the arc, arguably with more impact than what's being shown on screen. Don't knock things until you know the complete arc, please.
Disagree, Asuna has little impact in the GGO arc. GGO is more Kirito and Sinon up until they solve the mystery of how the people are dying in the game. What comes afterwards is irrelevant, it's just closure for the arc.
SAO is a terrible story. Why do you guys even bother to bicker about it?
Depends on your POV of which is the more important: events or results. Everything mostly happens online, so it can by normal conventional thinking be thrown away as "not real." The whole premise behind SAO is the question: "What IS real?"
Facts:
1. Everything that happened in SAO, ALO, and GGO were virtual. By modern thought all of these are NOT REAL.
2. Events in SAO, ALO, and GGO all ended up affecting things IN THE REAL WORLD. So they arguably can't be discounted.
3. So far SAO and ALO have touched on Black and White Cause and Effect. They've only hinted at and made references toward Mental State. GGO and Alicitization go more into that aspect.
The GGO Animation as a whole hasn't really shown much of the mental or emotional side of the arc at all in comparison to the LN, except for Sinon and her reaction to the gun maybe. Even then, how many events have been shown can have different interpretations in visual format in contrast to written format.
Kirito is the hero(And main character) of SAO, and Asuna is the main heroine. The story focuses more on Kirito. She isn't a side character, she just isn't focused on much.
For example the Alicization Arc is pure Kirito + New characters.
In Alicization Kirito totally forgot about Asuna.
I was speaking about her involvement, and Kirito is aware he's trapped in the world in question though ;)
