Kirito finally played MMO the proper way; use a girly avatar and act slutty.
You know its funny, I played MMOs for the better part of a decade, most of that time as female characters, and yet I never once had some lonely virgin try to hit on me or white knight for me.
Which leads me to believe that the only ones getting hit on and being given free stuff are the people who actively act like a slut to get the attention of the lonely virgins.
This is true. I play nothing but female characters as well, and not once have I ever had someone else actually try to hit on me or give me free stuff. At best I did some people act weird after they figured out I was a guy, but based on how those people talked, they seemed to be very young and couldn't wrap their mind around the fact that your character doesn't have to be like you in real life, lol.
In fact the only times I've ever seen someone getting handed free shit because there characters were female was when they actually proved themselves to be a girl in real life through voice chat, so yeah, it really has nothing to do with your avatars appearance.
well... I play a girl avatar cos im have this one rule : If I am to watch my character's back for fiev hours per day - than I want it to be a damn good one !
Actually happened to me twice in a short period of time. Once when I started playing GTA Online with a female character and some dude just gave me his rocket launcher and then again in Destiny when someone gave me a nice helmet and I didn't do anything slutty or to get attention. It happens but not as often as it's always portrayed.
Speaking of girl avatars, it's hilarious how lonely virgins care enough to give girl avatars items and shit in MMOs. Seriously, just assume everyones a guy until proven otherwise.

Most players assume everyone is a guy unless they sound like a girl in voice chat.
On the other hand I personally like to use female pronouns for female avatars unless they make a point of preferring male pronouns.

same here, except ive been playing gw2 for 2 years and my characters always get hit on so many times, like holy crap this must be how girls feel when they get hit on, after a good laugh, their persistence is really uncomfortable and it ceases to amuse me

Indeed, his character is an M9000 type. It's basically a male avatar with a female appearance. Something that's quite rare in the game. His gender ingame is officially male.

He went off the deep end and went straight drag is what really happened.
His character is just a feminine looking male avatar. This is quite common in japanese mmorpgs, also refered to as prettyboys/bishounen's. He converted his character from his ALO one, and I guess GGO just didn't have the exact same settings so what the game probally does was use settings close to what he had in ALO, and well this is what he ended up with. Its not like he edited his char to look that way, its just how it ended up. I mean he was pretty shocked at how his avatar looked himself.
And this is one of those things that the whole show has been inconsistent about.
In the beginning of SAO, some avatars get genderswapped due to Kayaba's trickery. This implies that some players were making avatars of the opposite gender.
However, later on Kirito mentions that due to some issues in the beta testing, SAO would not allow players to have avatars of opposite gender.
In fact, the only cases we have seen of opposite gender avatars were those random players at the very beginning of SAO.
I think that this is pretty strong evidence to pointing that yes, you CANNOT have avatars of opposite gender. Remember that every VRMMO is based on The Seed, which was based on SAO, so the same rules apply.
It wasn't trickery, it was Kayaba creating a nerve gear to scan your body and thus transforming your avatar into your real life self in appearance.

In this episode it was stated by Kirito that the guys who Kirito is investigating with somehow changed his mmo gender somehow. Check it out when Kirito logs in to GGO.
Nobody in the episode said anything about Kirito's MMO gender getting changed. Rather, Kirito received a male avatar with a very feminine look, as implied by the anime and explicitly mentioned in the light novels.
Kirito only states that SAO didn’t allow players to choose an avatar of the opposite gender in the infamous 16.5 which is both old and not even canon, at least for the LN, no idea about the original web version. In the LN it was
• allowed to have characters of different genders in SAO
• Kayaba did the mirror thing in the beginning so it didn’t really matter here
• It is afaik implied that in ALO you can indeed choose an avatar of the opposite gender (Kirito says he chooses a male one at the ALO character creation)
• Most other VRMMOs however don’t allow this, GGO follows this pattern
• Kirito’s avatar in GGO is male too, it’s just a rare one that looks very feminine
• There’s a rumour that you have a higher chance to get a rare avatar if you convert older characters, and since Kirito’s is as old as you can get as far as Seed worlds go, he’d also have the highest chance, but this is just a rumour in GGO.

I a ton of MMO/ rpgs, I choose a female avatar just so Im not starring at some guys butt for the next 100 hrs. That and I like strong female swordswomen. Or whatever the term is... Never been hit on ever as a female character and Ive been playing games since Atari. I just always played whatever looked cool and designers usually put more thought into the women characters. Unless the game has romances(Mass Effect, etc), then I play guys.
