Imas and Lovelive domination is because they're the frontrunners of the idol anime genre. Minmay is just an idol in a war story, she didn't make the genre popular.
Following that logic Sheryl and Ranka have both nothing to do with this list. Anon was right, Minmay was the original, she spawned clones among many anime science fiction shows from the 80s and even to this days (Sheryl and Ranka wouldn't even exist without her), she was the first idol to be one of the main characters of a series, and she even stopped a fucking war.

Azusa is too low on the list and Miki should have been number 1. However where the list really fails in the lack of Lynn Minmei on here . . .
Too old, and she didn't even hook up with Ichijou. If she were in an idol anime sure she would be no.1, but she's not in that genre, making her role as an idol "shallow" when compared to the characters from idol animes.
I love Minmei as the next guy, but you can't beat characters that's made for the idol genre.

I was expecting Chihaya to be the highest ranked iM@S idol. Her song "Yakusoku" was tear-jerking and yet it was one of the best songs iM@S has.
So no wake up, girls. I guess that is what happens when you have subpar animation, non cutesy personalities and stories.
If you take out all Im@s and Love live (nothing against them, just to let other animes be actually represented), it's actually a pretty decent list. Short, but decent.

Seriously, being designated the main character is pretty much the only thing she has going for her. I really hate it when someone decides that MC position should go to one of the most average characters there is. There is a difference between being well-rounded, and being just plain, you know. I guess to be fair, "main" is very loose with this franchise considering all the girls get a decent amount of focus (and in the original game, you're really just expected to focus on one girl with no particular bias but the player's own), but she still manages to be the representative face and thus gets slightly more top-billing than everyone else.
Also, just have to say I'm really saddened that Azusa's second to the last IM@s girl on this list. T_T
