Mahouka is an example of terrible writing and shit character design. It's the reason people can't have nice things.

I'm looking forward to No Game No Life the most every week. Started out Mahouka too as I read the first few volumes of the manga, but it's beginning to feel like it's a showcase of a certain "rettousei"'s ego trip. Though I am still following, not as keen anymore.

Mahouka would of been perfect if there was a massive penalty for using his powers. ATM there are none besides "you can't use military scale spells".

    Comment by Anonymous

And then he would be the same as all shounen crap heroes? No, thx.
Mahouka is good, cause they skipped all that power-up/training bullshit, that takes 4/5 of all serial. And they concentrated on that world mechanics/magic/etc.

yeah , it is the same reason i like it too. The only thing i have of this work is that Tatsuya is always the only one to explain stuff like others were retards . Author should work a little more on that .

Well, if you try to turn matter into energy (Material Burst) at close range you'd get dissintegrated, so I think that's good enough penalty, since it's a absurdly large range only spell... Flash Cast only works with spells he already knows and that have few processes... And Regrowth makes him sense the same pain as the target felt when injured but compressed in miliseconds, so that should count as a penalty too...
The only things "without penalty" in a true sense would be basic dismantling spells (like the ones he already used for dismantling guns), Elemental Sight, and Mist Dispersal. But since the true penalty of all those together is "unable to use any other kind of magic" and his penalty for being able to use other magic even if he sucks at it is almost absolute lack of emotion so... I think he has plenty of penalties for his overpowered status

the problem is that most anime is basically twilight level of wish fulfillment. you might find a couple titles that actually have some sense of artistic integrity, but most of it is to give the viewer a power trip and escape from their sad lives.

Since anime is made for teenagers and looney otakus, it's hardly very surprising. The market for powertrip Gary Sue daydreams is pretty huge in both of those two groups...

Mary Sues are absolutely "perfect" and invincible character.

It's a classic rookie mistake to make when you're not all that experienced at creating a story (ie. a book, fanfic, comic, role-playing session, movie, etc).

You make the hero be perfect in every single way imaginable, with no faults or weaknesses whatsoever.

He's the Man everyone loves, the men respect him and the ladies just want to line up outside his bedroom door. He beats all his enemies with the flick of his wrist, and he's also a genius so smart he won a Nobel Prize when he was 15.

He's the Superman with no kryptonite. He's the powertrip daydream of a 14 year old... and he's utterly, UTTERLY boring as a story.
    ...
and that's kinda where Mahouka is atm.

    >> Mary Sues are absolutely "perfect"

Dunno about you, but I like those type of characters. A lot. I absolutely hate it when the protagonists are equally matched with the antagonists. That's boring. Seen it a million times.

Now having someone kicking everyone's asses, THAT I call good entertainment.

    Like:

    Onizuka (GTO)
Yagami Light (Death Note, first Arc anyway)
    Kirito (SAO)
    Lelouch (Code Geass)
    Conan Edogawa (Meitantei Conan)
    Alucard (Hellsing)
    Kirika (Noir)
    Rushuna (Grenadier)
    Midou Ban (GetBackers)
    Hei (Darker Than Black)
    Yagami Kazuma (Kaze no Stigma)
    Kenshi (Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari)
Sakamaki Izayoi (Mondaiji-tachi ga Isekai kara Kuru Sou Desu yo?)
    .
    .

Buncha crappy TOP 10 lists. It's impressive how stupid people are, and that's why we have so many actual good manga that never get animated - because things like Love Live and Mahouka take their place.

The Mahouka adaptation's got some pacing issues, but it's runs rings around NGNL. The amount of love that show gets in American fan circles utterly baffles me. I'm more than happy to see Mahouka, Love Live, and Chaika dominate these lists.

Mahouka is utterly boring can't see how anybody can stay awake, watching it is about as entertaining as watching paint dry not to mention how bad the writing is and how dull most of the characters are.

NGNL while nothing new is at least fun to watch.

    Comment by Anonymous

the writing for NGNL is utter shit. The suspension of disbelief can only take so much before it comes crashing down crying 'bullshit!'

At least the Blank siblings win their battles by the edge of their breath, unlike Tatsuya who just steamrolls everything without any effort. You do realize the entire setting of Mahouka has been constructed to be a giant collection of trash mobs that Tatsuya can butt-fuck without any effort? That's the whole point of the show, and it's lame.

    Comment by Anonymous
    11:26 18/06/2014 # ! Neutral (0)

NGNL is at least half just comedy, and esp. a humoristic piss-take on all the fanservice of modern anime.

The writers of NGNL also understand the crucial point that to make a story interesting, the main chars have to struggle to win. They have one weapon, their brains, fighting opponents that are stronger and are playing with a stacked deck.

The whole premise of the show is about how the main chars manage to outwit their enemy and wins.

In Mahouka, the main char is James Bond, Superman and Artemis Fowl combined. At an age of 17, he's a military trained assassin powerful enough to annihilate anyone he wishes, he's a famous genius level engineer who invents a way to fly in his spare time, and pretty much half the ladies he's met so far have fallen for him.

and that's the whole show. There's no comedy, no interesting character stories, and not even a equally powerful rival to make things interesting. The whole show is just Shiba Tatsuya, demigod, walking around among ants.

The whole show is a 14 year old boy's powertrip daydream, and nothing else.
