A man has been arrested for engaging in indecent acts with a schoolgirl friend after her mother invited him to come to her house to give her some private tutelage and then turned him over to police.
The 32-year-old unemployed Osaka prefecture man became acquainted with a high schooler in nearby Nara prefecture by way of an unnamed video site.
The two continued their friendship for some six months with the assent of the girl’s mother.
The girl then approached her mother for advice as her friend “wants to take me out with him” – her mother replied that “you might as well get him to help you with your studies at home then,” and he paid a visit to their home.
There the pair’s acquaintance took a decidedly intimate turn, but for some reason the mother decided to consult with the local police.
They promptly arrested the man on charges of engaging in indecent acts with a minor, which he admitted to.
Online, for some reason there is a certain amount of sympathy for his case:

In the NL, the age of consent* is 16, as far as I know. So, if she was in fact 17 as stated above (it's not mentioned anywhere in the text), she'd have been ok there.
Sadly that doesn't apply to almost any other place in the world. (Japan included)

A 30 year old is in a position of much greater psychological stability than a 16 year old, and has an implicit trust and authority over minors, especially if they're in the position of a tutor. The whole -point- of age of consent laws is that a young person doesn't necessarily have the knowledge, experience, and maturity to be expected to make reasoned decisions about consent like an adult does. In the case of two younger people, however, while that may still be true, neither person is in the same position of power over the other. It's the difference between two kids making a mutual mistake and one adult taking advantage of a kid's naivete.

Although a minor under federal law is 18, unless you do something outrageous that gets the feds involved it would all be done in local courts, if it even got to that point.
Yet again there are just too many factors involved that were left out. Such as the mother had never met him before, potentially, and when she saw him may have gotten a bad vibe and understandably didn't trust him, especially when sex is involved on supposedly their first meeting. Also we don't know the age of the girl, but realistically it's a stigma to have a younger girl in a sexual relationship with an older guy one way or another.
I'm not against a consensual relationship of that nature with parental knowledge, but it also places a lot of responsibility on the man who has to have the wherewithal to take into account that a teenager is still impressionable in ways that are unique to each teenager, and that there is a part of the relationship that, at least for the first few years of it, will not be equal because of the nature of a teenager's mind not having reached its third stage of development for full cognitive thought. He will have had experience and his mind having grown through the third stage puts her at a mental disadvantage perceiving the relationship. It's why the number 18 exists in the first place for legality here, but it should be a guideline, not a criminalization. A teenager is bright and understanding enough in second stage development to know they want sex and are able to have a relationship... most of them are just really, really not very perceptive or understanding, and often downright selfish and whiny. There are some very mature teenagers out there though who do not give off that vibe and can have a natural conversation with an older person with understanding beyond their age.
