Microsoft’s decision to finally unbundle Kinect from the Xbox One and in the process equal the PlayStation 4 in price has been hailed as the last of its humiliating Xbox Onw climb-downs, which have seen such amazing new features as support for used games and the ability to function without an Internet connection added in response to consumer demand.
Microsoft is spinning the decision to provide a version of the console sans Kinect as a deft response to “your feedback”:
Since the beginning, we have focused on delivering great games and entertainment experiences for you.
Your feedback matters to us and it shapes the products and services we build.
Your feedback showed up in the Xbox One console we launched back in November and in the monthly updates we’ve delivered since.
Today, we’re excited to share more ways your feedback is impacting the products we build.
First, beginning on June 9th, in all markets where Xbox One is sold, we will offer Xbox One starting at $399*. This is a new console option that does not include Kinect.
[…]
If you buy Xbox One for $399 and later decide you want to have all the experiences Kinect enables, we will also offer a standalone sensor for Xbox One later this fall. We’ll share more details about the standalone Kinect for Xbox One in the coming months.
Additionally, the Xbox Live Gold requirement for many services is being watered down:
Next, we’re bringing more value to Xbox Live Gold members and offering all Xbox 360 and Xbox One owners access to entertainment apps whether or not you have an Xbox Live Gold membership
Although the decision to drop mandatory Kinect may have had more to do with the irrelevance of Kinect to most games and the sales boost a cheaper console might represent, the move also means that more circumspect Xbox One gamers will also be spared the hassle of disabling their new MSNSA monitoring device – although most still seem to think it far too late to rescue this generation from the jaws of Sony.

It happened soon than I thought. But there's no point seeing as there are no games worth getting it for (same deal with the PS4).
Pretty much. These consoles have fuck all for games.
Leaves me to wonder why the WiiU still gets shit on. Funny thing is, because Nintendo still insists on region-locking, I bought my WiiU imported partially because I never had a Japanese Wii and wanted to take advantage of the backwards compatibility. But even then, its library of new games, as limited as it is, seems way more promising than the other two.
And any games are now "HD" upgrades of PS3 game and $60 games, broken up into pieces and added on later as micro(macro)transactions.
Pay full whack, for unfinished, buggy mess.
Have rest of game in installments later...for an addition $10 or more, each time.
Hope the industry eats itself sooner than later.
amen to that.. but when you see how many shit loads of $$ people are ready to invest in "F2P" games, obviously the industry isn't gonna stop taking us for morons anytime soon..
well let's hope am wrong and they'll go back to releasing full non beta game someday..
So glad I didn't buy my xbox one. More to do with Im in Taiwan and the fact I still have so many 360 games to through than not buying one to be honest. I don't want the kinetic at all.
ITs pretty much MS trying to at least put up a fight after the beating is getting from Sony's PS4....in the end Xbone should really be called X180 after all this back tracking.....
Keep trying to catch up MS!!!
Once Halo etc are released the console will easily break 10 million sold. The first party exclusives have sold Microsoft consoles in huge amounts in America(Arguably where the Xbox 360 was more popular). They don't have much to worry about.
Not so much putting up a fight, as having been found out. All these corporations are not your friend. The only time they do something positive is when decisions they made previously, suddenly start impacting their wallet.
Same goes for $ony. All of them.
As soon as the storm passes, don't be at all surprised that they again give with one hand, whilst taking with another. All smoke and mirrors.
They'll do anything to get your money. Not make your experience worthwhile. Only ever bearable.
Well, pretty much the same applies to anime, when you think about it... and I doubt anyone here will stop watching anime for knowing that.
Actually, I've almost stopped watching anime. Maybe 1 per season looks interesting to me, and I have so many I still haven't watched because I just don't feel like it. They're getting too repetitive, and all devolving into nothing but tits & ass.
Haven't watched anime since Spice and Wolf II and I am still waiting on Magipoka season 2. What am I still doing here?!
Not even one per season is interesting. I stopped watching since Death Note / Code Geass .
Idk, PSplus's free games and services are pretty worthwhile.
Does anyone play those old free games they hand out?
Im playing PSN plus 'free' games quite a lot. Some of those I've never played/bough/rented so to me is quite a steal....
But you can only play those games as long as you are subscribed to PS+ right? At least with XBL you get too play the free games even if your subscription runs out.
@ Josh
The games MS gives out, you can find at the bargain bin in any game store. And you only get one game a month.
Meanwhile, PS+ gives more than one, all the time every month.
They're all lying manipulative crooks.
What a butthurt X1 fanboy.
Hey, remember when the PS3 first came out and sold horribly for a few years before bouncing back and finally selling more units than the 360 last year?
Of course you don't.
Oh, and Sony is still in financial trouble while MS just reported $20.4 billion in profits last quarter.
I see some butthurt Xbox fanboys upvoting this post.
Vert and Leanbox will never defeat Noire and Lastation.
Go to hell
stfu gaytard
Go fuck yoself, you dick sucking pussy ass bitch
lick your own pussy, bitch
did u enjoy fucking yourself?
i bet he did
Please understand.
^lol^
Having kinect as a pack in item was very stupid of Microsoft as it kept them from matching the PS4's price and most games didn't benefit from it.
I never considered the price point of just about anything except large expenditures like cars, boats and housing. I would gladly pay 2000 dollars for a nice cell phone with 3x battery life. A couple hundred dollars is nothing if you consider how much time during its life cycle you are going to use it.
Maybe you. But think about countries where you can eat a whole month with 100 over even 200 bucks. When you have to save money for over a year to buy something like this, 100$ is a difference as big as a mountain.
Even 99.9% of the people in the US would laugh at his idea of spending $2000 on a cell phone.
But on first world people buying it well a lot of people consider a console a toy and it's usually something they buy mainly for their kids.
A $100 can make or break the decision to buy the device.
This even held true when the economy was great.
ah, so you're the f@gget that paid 10K for an iPhone. Aren't you special.
Kinect was a piece of shit anyway. I'm glad they're abandoning it.
"Although the decision to drop mandatory Kinect may have had more to do with the irrelevance of Kinect to most games and the sales boost a cheaper console might represent"
I think that is a problem, because the PS4 does not bundle the cam. Since most games are Multi Platform, there is just no way the devs would do something innovative with Kinect because they have to build their game for the general audience which may or may not have a camera, be it kinect or PScam.
Another instance, where a good dictator is better than democracy. Hinders innovation.
another instance where a person fails to understand "innovation" does not equal doing anything.
innovation requires a certain prerequisite of usefulness.
you can create a new wheel, but if it does absolutely nothing to improve on the old wheel other than be different, that's not innovation.
if your new wheel solves a problem or satisfies a need that doesn't actually exist, that's not innovation.
simply being an "other" or an "alternate" does not make something an innovation. it just makes it a thing that may or may not prove to be anything meaningful as many things exist and most aren't innovations.
and will never be considered innovations due to lack of a billion dollar corporate funded sales campaign selling that idea for even new product to the legions of people who will eat up such sales pitches.
Kinect was mandatory for the XBOne as is up until yesterday and yet =
1) NOBODY was actually using it for anything
2) the biggest XBOne title to date DID NOT USE IT FOR ANYTHING
3) and devs of several games coming down the development pipeline have said that they too weren't going to be using the Kinect and weren't even going to bother fake using Kinect for anything
those facts say a lot about Kinect's value as "innovation".
Being able to use your body in a game isn't innovative? I guess we shant expect a holodeck cause you can achieve the same results with a 2d video game.

You obviously didn't care to read my post.
1) Because most titles are multi platform
2) which one would that be? Titanfall? That's multi platform as well.
3) again, most games are multi platform.
The PS4 trackpad has the same issues. Probably no one uses it (for innovative game changing stuff) because Xbox One does not have it. But they can at least use it to duplicate stuff or make some thing more accessible because let's say binding leaning around corners on a trackpad for the PS4 version is a matter of a few hours extra coding, while doing kinect stuff is probably a little more complicated and too much extra work for a little gimmick. And as I said, game changing things cannot be done since firstly too much extra work for a multi platform title which has to be balanced on all platforms and secondly the PS4 people would riot if the XB1 version was considerably superior because of that.
So basically the only way for kinect development would be kinect only titles, or xbox one exclusives in general, which microsoft just killed, because now, devs cannot count on kinect being present, so an xbox 1 exclusive to a developer considering kinect is like a multi platform title now.
They would either need to somehow balance controller only gaming and controller + kinect or make it kinect only which would further cut down target demographic.
That why triple a xbox exclusives don't really use it up till now. And after just half a year time on the market the devs didn't really have that much time to utilize the guarantee that kinect is present on any xbox one unit yet. Dream is over now. Kinect will stay being a gimmick.
Kinect and a holodeck are apples and oranges. Try again, jackass.
heh~ creating the new wheel was what a Israel farmer just did for wheel chairs but also could be expanded to All vehicles too. He literal invented the wheel.
+
Any peripheral for a gaming system will work if the player doesn't have to move anything more than fingers. The reason the wii was successful was because the controls reacted sluggishly, till "gamers" demanded 1 to 1 reaction finding out that they really, Really had rotten motor skills and got worse at the game for it.. and stopped playing that system.
00ps~sorry..ahem:
"He literal RE-invented the wheel."
Amazing how people ignore the PS4's stupid trackpad... All this gen brought are more powerful machines, that's it. Big let-down.
another idiot who believe kinect is their savior.
Yeah, Kinect was mildly amusing for a bit but the novelty wore off pretty fast. Remember the Milo demo? Where's THAT kind of interactivity? THAT sort of use would be cool. But instead I'm waving my arms around or fake-jumping in my living room and having the motions misinterpreted a little too often. It's just not worth it.
I think we've exhausted the motion control gimmick. The Wii was cute but after that I had had enough. Playstation's Move was a colossal failure. We don't need motion controls or tablet controllers. Let's get back to core game play with a nice, functional gamepad.
I wish they'd drop Kinect from games and focus on using it for, you know, shit that it's actually useful for (protip: NOT games).
Doesn't matter, PC Master race!
Well, where else would you play dating sims?
Or Touhou.
and get those for free (not really). you pc plebs should understand that you stealing most of your stuff. what a dimwit.
You can practically taste the butthurt in this weak quip that doesn't manage to contain the obviously overflowing jealousy experienced by those who don't even have the option of stealing their games.
