sadly alot of anime's nowadays have useless MC's. that's why there's been an increase in female MC's as well as anime's where there are little to no males at all. but apparently that's what people want to see or at least Japanese people anyway.
this is just My opinion but I believe that the reason why there's so many female MC's is that obviously most of the anime's are targeted at male's, teens-adults. since obviously sex sells or so the saying goes most of viewers would rather see a hot or cute female mc as apposed to seeing a guy, who they wish they were since "most" japanese males are actually spineless around girls.
now as for the male leads always or in most cases being worthless, generic, clueless, cowards that you just want to beat up. I believe it's because it represents what japanese males are and aren't. what I mean is this you have to make it believable if one of them (japanese viewer) was a lead character that's what they would most likely be. however when they add bad ass male leads most of the time they can't relate (since let's face it not that many japs are threatening when they can't even be around a girl without getting arrested or when they kill themselves for very stupid reasons).
that's why certain anime's aren't that popular in japan yes there are a few exceptions, but even so the popularity is still way higher outside of japan.
you need to remember moe, girls, loli's, big boobs, fan service are all it takes to make anime nowaydays.
it's sad when they don't really try like this one.
@ anon 15:32 you forgot the school swimsuits, skirts, bouncy boobs, bj references, being covered in white stuff (either milk, ice cream, or something else), the tsundere, the tripping and exposing your panties, toast in your mouth, the little sister who loves her onii chan, and of course a cat or cat girl reference I could go on and on and on but I think these are the more common ones you see on almost every anime. it really goes to show just how much effort they really put into anime's these days.
A male MC can instantly ruin an otherwise great show just by existing, in many times with a single line of dialogue or in under 30 seconds of screen time. It's best to avoid this hazard and have only girls until male MCs can be... well, males again. The one in this show seems to at least look more manly than usual in his face and I don't think he's nearly as bad as the standard but he is treated pretty shitty and violently by all the girls in the show because that's how males are treated by girls in anime. If he did not exist or was a girl suddenly all those total bitch girls would convert into nicer characters and the show would receive a large increase in enjoyability.

The reason there are weak male MCs is because they arent supposed to have a personality. Their presence is meant to be as weak as possible so that the otaku can easily insert themselves into him. If his personality is too strong, it runs the risk of clashing with any given otaku's personality.
Sad but true. It doesn't mean 'japan likes crappy MCs', it means otaku are so insecure that they get jealous of a fictional dude getting with a fictional girl...unless they can pretend that fictional dude is them.

Take a good look, Juugo is at least quite competent compared to most of the other normal, non-superpowered MCs. And no, so far he doesn't get pushed around by other female characters like a rag doll, other than doing small favors like buying Nanana's pudding.
