Maka's plainness and frequent scowling was something that was interesting about the original.
Why does this have to fuck that up? I understand that it's deliberately very different, but then why doesn't it emphasize that by leaving the original characters as they were, or at least closer to that?
Soul Eater Not is a prequel, so something probably happens that makes Maka less happy. (though I haven't read the SE-Not manga, so IDK)

Maka is actually a nice girl...unless she's dealing with her father, Soul and her colleagues including Black Star. She's a nice person, she just hangs out with people who grate on her nerves on a daily basis.
You must admit tho, during soul eater the actual plot line was rather intense. And Maka was brooding over stuff a lot. I'm not saying it wasnt good but it'd explain the sudden shift in tone. We only see Maka when she is being a top student showing off to her underclass men or just doing her own thing. Its a little unfair to say her entire personality has changed based on this one episode and her obligatory cameos
I liked the insane Maka better. Insanity was the one good thing about soul eater that made it different from the rest,.. but somehow the story managed to get rid of that and went fulltime Shounen.
Wouldn't it have been interesting if Maka and her Partner went on to become the bad guys and then kicked some ass?
This takes place like when their 13 so of course their gonna be different, plus the manga is basically about the girls finding their place with each other with mild appearances by the main characters, basically what happens behind the scenes

The manga is much more consistent with Soul Eater visually, this adaptation purposefully dumbs it down for the sake of appealing to the moe market.
No, this is pretty much spot on. The only big difference I see is that the anime doesn't do that peculiar 'ring-within-rings' eyes that the manga does. What few differences there are are minor and well within what can be expected when literally drawn by different people.
Seems to me that most complaints are from those people that are going straight from Soul Eater to this, without reading the manga, and expecting it to be the same. There IS a reason it's called Soul Eater NOT!, after all.

the manga still has 'ugly' facial expressions to look funny and expressive, while the anime is trying to be obnoxiously cute at all times. the eyes in the manga are less over-detailed and cartoonier and more expressive. the characters in the manga don't literally BLUSH AT ALL TIMES. the anime is so pathetic that they literally made the blushes a part of the character designs. the Soul Eater Not manga has a 'cute and cool' atmosphere and its sense of style reflects this, the anime is just 'cute' and boringly cute at that.
comparing this to K-On is an insult to K-On, btw.

I haven't seen this episode or read the original manga but I have seen and loved the Soul Eater anime and this... looks like everything I hate about the current "style" of anime. Why does this exist and does it mean that there will never be a "proper" Soul Eater continuation ?
Even though Sakura Trick is gone, the yuri is strong this season.
Don't tell me this can feel the void Sakura Trick left. So far the only show with a yurish premise is Akuma Riddle and I expect them to bait and switch.

"It's completely - !" Sorry I can't disagree more, ONE episode is released and only by seeing these old characters back in animation it really felt GOOD. We know they changed the artstyle but holy shit, it doesn't change that Maka is still MAKA.

I can see why someone would think this is bland, not sure about the soulless part, since the series has a slow start and main characters from Soul Eater aren't the focus so they don't show up much.
