It's this whole civilized people's idea that having sex, or having genitals and mammaries to begin with, is shameful and that they should be inexplicably covered with clothing that starts all sorts of sexual anxiety issues with people of all ages and cultures.
Somehow sex is seen as "dirty" and "obscene", instead of being viewed as probably the most fun thing in the world. That, and, of course, the act of reproducing.
I see nothing wrong with worshiping one's power to reproduce, and it boggles my mind how even borderline fascists like Japanese are actually ashame of their own heritage.

Traditionally the Japanese have had a pretty relaxed attitude towards sex, but in the country's great push towards modernization in the 1800s they decided to adopt everything western, including the Victorian morality that was fashionable at the time. That's why Japan is so contradictory.
Even prostitution was made illegal once foreigners got involved following WW2. The red light districts completely changed after that.
That's Christian values for you. Pretty much as simple as that.

Similar phenomena occur in various cultural contexts. Where I live, popular names of male genitals originate with what happens to be objects of popular Christian worship during Easter and Christmas nowadays.
To add to the irony, they're ashamed of how they're being perceived yet their reactions are what should truly bring shame to them. Modern Japan has become a culture that shames being different (hence the comment about crossdressers and newhalves), it quietly condemns people who act as individuals or outcasts outside of social groups through means such as group bullying. On that note, while we still see conservative comments of that nature today, the younger generations seem to be drifting away from the idea that being an "individual" is such a bad thing, and that's also partially because older generations have been pushing THEM away for expressing themselves. At least, from my experience here. Certain prejudices still carry on through time, but most of them have been disappearing. Now it's just a matter of who they put in charge.

Being exposed to sex at a young age has psychological ramifications--you can type that into google and found multiple studies verifying this. Not to mention sex always carries risks of pregnancy and STDs. Having a healthy mindset about sex and parading on a wooden penis while licking a dick icecream are extremely different things.

Again, citation needed. The puritan mentality has changed dramatically in western/westernized countries. You can look at the mainstream media to see the glorification of sex. If anything, it's interesting to read that some Japanese are drawing the line at penis parades given how open their society is about sex.
Ironically, that "glorification of sex in the west" is actually PERVERSION that stems out of repression and taboo culture. Not that there's anything wrong with perversion, I think it makes things more fun and interesting, but when that's all there is an all other sensibilities are thrown out the window (such as education which can only be brought about after enough repression has been subtracted) then it can lead to some problems.
