The thing of course was that the Ryuuko/Satsuki battle was hyped so much and it was epic enough that it was impossible to keep outshine.
There is also the problem that the plot grew much complex with more involvement from side characters so they were very constrained for screen time.
Then there was the fact that they simply could not copy whatever Gurran Lagann did because THAT's what everybody was expecting to happen.
So they had to resolve all plot points, give everybody screentime and remain original and surprising.
However I still think the ending was great precisely because it remained fresh until the end. It was epic, but it was different and surprising even while being clichéd. It was what it had to be.

This does look a bit weird, though - male nipples and featureless female breasts. Detailed, realistic female nipples would also look out of place with this art style, but sketchy minimal ones similar to the male nipples would fit in better.
