Anime: Smoking “Uncool”

Anime is now the chosen medium for anti-smoking campaigns, thanks to the genius of the Okayama prefectural government in commissioning an anime with its “uncoolness” as its main theme.
Okayama prefecture’s improbably ambitious goal of the “complete elimination” of the scourge of underage smoking (from the staggering rates of 3.3% for high school boys and 1.2% for JKs) has resulted in an anime DVD for distribution to schools, intended to ensure they are all made to understand just how “uncool” tobacco is:
Whether an anime will have any more success than decades of anti-smoking, anti-drinking, anti-drugs and anti-sex propaganda has had in discouraging minors from indulging in these illicit pleasures is of course open to question…

Well smoking is unhealthy and can shorten your life. But I don't think a country with a birthrate problem has any right in publicizing anti-sex propaganda.
I don't think a country with an ageing crisis has any right publicising anti-smoking propaganda.
Smoking could save Japan. It brings in taxes and kills people off just as they become unproductive. And that's leaving aside the fact that it's a stimulant that makes people work harder.
But doesn't Japan already have some of the highest rates of chain-smokers in the world? So many people smoke that it's a wonder how the country manages to also have the highest life expectancy.
Because while some overstressed salaryman is smoking and working to death in the city, in the countryside there's an old guy who is relaxing and eating fish and not about to go anytime soon.
Being a fatfuck kills you faster. The difference is that I don't think that sitting next to fatfuck while he eats burgers and chug cola will make me fat.
You do know that it first makes them sick? And because Japan isn't part of the third world like US, I believe it has universal healthcare. Meaning smoking most likely causes huge costs when the tar-lungs finally start to fail and they end up in ER/ICU for years before finally kicking it... I rememeber some calculation that the health costs greatly outnumber the tax payoff.
Yes but so can over working and they don't do anything about that.
[Over]working is seen as a noble, laudable, & admirable thing. Especially by the people who stand to profit the most from it: The owners of the businesses people are overworking at.
Agreed even though those salary man hours will wreck your health faster then smoking, drinking and even obesity alone will.
Actually it tends to help cause all three of the above.
Actually it's all economic logic. Hard work leads to low birth rate which leads to more porn which leads to more rape which leads to more births which leads to hard work.
You know...
logic.

All three? Since when are most salary men obese?
I never quiet understood the pleasure of paying for stuff that is bad for your health. I guess kids do stupid stuff and once their addicted they can't help it anymore...
I agree with you. However, after trying smoking myself and I can't deny its relaxing qualities. There's definitely a reason why people smoke.
Also a social thing too.
Yep, it's incredibly relaxing. One of the best things about smoking is it can teach you breathing techniques without you even realizing it. For example, when people are mad or stressed, what they are supposed to do is take a step back, breathe deeply, exhale.
Relaxing.. well.. than it's not for me. Any more relaxed than I am and I would be dead.
It's actually a myth that smoking relaxes. What's actually relaxing is the act of taking a time out and deep breasts... the actual smoking is about as relaxing as a roller coaster. Cigarettes were created to stimulate. I guess maybe some people lose that effect after going through it so much so while they're taking a breather and relaxing they decide to slowly poison themselves at the same time.
YES DEEP BREASTS... THATS MORE LIKE IT~~~~
Yes, I did mean to breasts, because breasts make everything better.
I think the relaxing qualities were actually found false... I think it was something about the calming effect being only short term but smoking in general having a long term effect that causes smokers to actually get stressed more easily than non-smokers. This effect would then make it seem more and more like the smoking calms you down, while the stress accumulation actually stems from it. It is a nasty drug after all.
I've worked with someone in a warehouse that shows that clearly. But thankfully he got wise to all the bullshit he thought he knew about why he was still doing it and was trying to quit.
nicotine is a neurotransmitter naturaly produced by the body, but in small doses. A single cigarette has a waaay to strong dose, not to talk about a cigar. The receptors of it increase in number to deal with the bigger dose, and it do have a effect of stimulation. But once the dose is over, the impulse to smoke more will make people more stressed. The biggest problem: it takes too many time for the receptors to decrease in number. For like, 10-15 years after stopping smoking people would feel the same urge to light a cigar as the 1st day they stopped.
There are a host of il/legal opiates and barbiturates, so that can't be it. A cigarette client is basically a corporate puppet paying for marketing and image, with chemical strings intentionally added to prevent escape. I don't put up with that shit from DRM, I wouldn't take it from a tobac mfg.
I don't know shit about it but enthusiasts will probably direct you to places/methods for getting a legit tobacco fix. Done right, they probably compete on price too, considering the high industry tax/markup.
A relative off mine got addicted to the sugar in coca cola.
I used to drink at least one pepsi can a day, then dropped it cold turkey... for root bear and ginger ale... then I dropped those cold turkey. Closest thing to a sugary snack I consume these days is dark chocolate and the occasional blueberry muffin. Now if I take a sip of soda it just burns my throat.
Sugar and especially soda is fucked up since just one can surpasses your daily sugar intake limit. Ever wonder why the nutrition facts show the daily percentage for most things except sugar? Cuz soda companies would lose money if people say something like 100%+ next to sugar.
One soda a day is absolutely harmless it only becomes harmful when you start drinking soda as your primary beverage you you are drinking liters of it a day.
But for most people who drink one soda a day, that's never their only source of sugar. They can easily double their daily allowed intake of sugar every day. And everyone I know who drinks soda never sticks to just one can, they often go for larger quantities. The sodas are arguably the worst things that fast food joints sell.
Do you like sugar or salt? Basically almost the whole world is addicted to those drugs.
You can easily exclude them from most of your food. It takes only 40+ days to change your food preferences.
You should look up what addiction means.
Sugar, at least, is more and more being considered a dangerous and addictive drug. Sure, it's an exaggeration to say that everyone who eats sugar is literally addicted to it, but to be fair I didn't mean it literally in the first place. Just saying, you are actually paying for stuff that's nothing but bad for your health. Not trying to defend smokers or anything.
Same. And alcohol. And I tried both - its just smells and taste horrible, no mater what, when, or how much.
Sometimes I feel like I'm the only adult in the world who doesn't drink any alcohol.
I don't like alcoholic beverages taste. Unless it tastes like candy or juice but them I god with the much cheaper candy or juice.
May the Light of Zvezda shine throughout the world!
I was thinking the same thing.
They can't promote Zvezda though because it encourages personal freedom and that would be against the gov't agenda.
Hell Yeah!
Veneera-sama would be so proud.
Yep. And Zvezda did it much better too.

But doesn't it actually harm people other than the one smoking? they say that Smokers actually breath out the worst of it but when someone else breaths THAT in it stays in. I swear I saw a study were they were shocked to find that even 3rd hand smoke can be harmful. The stuff that clings to clothes and houses can put stress on the heart or something.
Whether anything comes of that 3rd hand smoke thing 2nd hand is a documented killer. I'd be more okay with people smoking if it was just themselves they are harming..... It's a tough situation.
Consider the following: if two people smoking in the same room time and time again, they kill each other 3 times faster.
Supposedly the cigarette it's self acts as a filter and some do have filters so they don't breath the worst of it in.
It's also highly processed which makes it worse then lets say a pipe or cigar.

The way they move around is so disgusting.
Onizuka makes smoking look too cool. This anime can't compete with such bad assery.
well, that was painful to watch, it looks just like these regular boring shitty prevention spots we have here except they just decided to draw it thinking it'll make the message pass more easily
it's like they took the worse of animation and prevention spots and mixed it up.
I've seen flash animations more animated than this crap.
Same here.
Shitty animation aside I'd watch it if they only continued the plot as a regular story, I mean if one can endure hours of Umineko and Higurashi game-play for story, than this is nothing.
Me: "hahaha it can't be that bad, let's check it out..."
*watches*
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH! MY EYES! MY EYES!
I've seen flip-book animation smoother than this. Hell, I've DRAWN flip-book animation smoother than this.
Still better than out anti smoking campaigns at least the cigarette exists
This one is the best I've seen:
