China Military Buildup “Boosted 12.2%”

varyag-tan

The Chinese government has revealed it will boost its military spending by 12.2% in 2014, the 4th year running spending has increased and well above the 7.5% GDP growth target for the year – calling the increase “moderate, and limited in scale” and saying it will help “make more contributions to world peace.”

In dollars the 2014 total now stands at some 132 billion. In 2013 China’s military spending “only” increased 10.7%, whilst in 2012 it increased 11.2% and in 2011 went up by 12.7%.

Just how accurate the figures are has long been open to question, given the state of China’s official statistics, its propensity for unreported spending and the vast business interests maintained by the military.

State media is careful to present the increases as necessary for such innocent purposes as “modernisation” and “peacekeeping operations,” although international attention has generally been focused on its antics in Japan’s disputed border territories.

A naval buildup is believed to be the main immediate priority for China, with its long public designs on Taiwan and more recent claims on the Senkaku islands increasingly being joined by calls for Okinawa’s “return” by more extreme military hawks.

Meanwhile Japan has announced spending increases to its pathetic military budget ($47.5 billion at present) of 0.8%, whilst Obama supposedly intends to at least cut the rate of growth of the USA’s gargantuan war machine, currently at a paltry $527 billion.

Japan's budget is surprisingly big, tbh. I guess those 'murican guns don't come cheap.

Unless you're America. America has enough firepower to bomb China not just to the stoneage but all the way back to the beginning of time. One huge hole in the planet down to the very core.

It comes down to the fact newer planes/ships cost a lot of money to build. They will have spent a lot in ordering these planes.

Japan gets very little bang for their buck, the opposite of China.

Aside from that, China's military spending is higher than their reported numbers. And no, it's not because they lied - the numbers themselves are solid and thoroughly audited. A lot of the logistics spending doesn't go into the military budget, unlike for US. For example, veteran's health care is a major spending category for US, and funded by the military budget. In China, it's funded by Healthcare budget. They moved all the logistics jobs into other departments, the department of defence budget is purely military.

China has the largest quantity of military personnel in the world.
So, They are not satisfied with their quantity ?

It's their quality that's absolute crap. So 12.2% goes toward improving their quality by 1%.

Having superior numbers does not guarantee victory.

It might not guarantee victory but IF victory is achieved, you'll need soldiers as an occupational force. Gotta hold the ground you've taken and keep the locals in check. Could be the real reason why shipping giant COSCO suddenly decided to stop handling weapons and ammunition. The Chinese government figured out a use for all of those SKS's and the millions of rounds of 7.62x39 they made back in the '60's instead of just dumping them on the Canadian civilian market.

It worked well enough in the Korean War, but that was 50 years ago, China was a different country then. The richer the population of a country gets, the less they tolerate mass causalities.

Japan is probably going to be on their own now considering that USA didn't do jack shit to Ukraine when Russia started their occupation.

China will probably follow Russia's example and USA will just sit elsewhere doing nothing but writing "strongly worded letters."

Not really fair to compare those statistics, because "Military spending" includes a ton of other stuff, including things like DARPA, which is basically the government funded research.

And not all of that is military research (from personal experience), unless the military really gets off on using things like hydrogels or combating atherosclerosis. : )

A huge portion of the American spending is misappropriated and ends up making a select few very very rich. We don't pay our troops shit, and if you've ever been to a military base almost everything looks 50+ years old. But somehow everyone just shrugs when we get told that the war in Iraq and Afghanistan costs us more than 4 trillion dollars.
