China Smog “Like Nuclear Winter”

The smog cloud choking China is blotting out so much of the sun that plants will have difficulty growing and the country’s agriculture could be crippled, warn Chinese scientists – comparing the effects of the pollution to a “nuclear winter.”

Photos of murky grey expanses which are reputedly the nation’s cities have proven shocking enough, as has the likelihood that millions of Chinese will be killed by smog-induced disease and that cloud now poisons neighbouring countries, but researchers now say it is in danger of decimating the nation’s agricultural output.

A professor with a Chinese agricultural university has conducted experiments in which seedlings which formerly took 20 days to grow ended up taking two months under smoggy conditions, and says greenhouses will be the first to be hit – though by no means the last:

“They will be lucky to live at all. Now almost every farm is caught in a smog panic.

A large number of representatives of agricultural companies have suddenly showed up at academic meetings on photosynthesis in recent months and sought desperately for solutions.

Our overseas colleagues were shocked by the phenomenon because in their countries nothing like this had ever happened.”

The effect is, he says, “somewhat similar to a nuclear winter.”

A researcher with the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth provides the less than reassuring news that via satellite data the authorities may actually now how much of an impact the smog is having but are keeping the results secret to avoid a panic:

“Such studies are sensitive and their results will probably not be released to the public.

Some government officials might worry that linking smog to agricultural production would prompt a panic.

But there is no denying the sunlight that reaches Chinese soil has been dramatically reduced in recent years.”

Desperate farmers are said to be experimenting with even more intense use of growth hormones and even artificial lighting in an effort to preserve their yields – although given that most of China’s power comes from coal this may not have the intended result.

Oh god, growth hormones...it's just a continuous downward spiral. Thank god most of the European nations have strict laws against use of the bullshit we do to our plants as well. If china keeps doing this stuff... well... more people will die and be diseased, so I guess nothing will be different from the current situation there.

Then again much of our population is stupid enough not to recognize the dangers of genetic modification to foods either so...

You're pretty stupid for thinking that genetic modification is inherently dangerous.

Agreed - And we've been doing similar things to plants and animals for centuries anyways. Genetically modifying them merely changes how quickly and the exact nature of the changes.

its a bit different cross breeding strains of wheat etc,as apposed to splicing in genes from bacteria,no one knows the full effects.

plus youve got pollen blowing into neighbouring organic farms and cross pollinating with their crop, the farmers who dont want to deal with monsanto etc and keep growing traditional strains get shafted and lose their organic cert.

and monstanto laugh all the way to the bank.

there is nothing wrong with genetic modification, esp in the likes of genetic illnesses etc;but when youve got big business and big money running sloppy safety trials its not exactly on the up and up.

There are checks in place meant to prevent such accidents from occurring. And in the unlikely event a strain gets out, its very quickly dealt with.

Contrary to what the anti-GM cults would like you to believe, there is no conspiracy to 'spread' GM genes onto non-GM crops. Its actually the opposite.

Farmers who use GM crops have to follow extremely strict guidelines to prevent the genes from GM crops getting out. The GM companies themselves have to guarantee that. If they fail to do so, a federal investigation is immediately initiated.

Whoever is found to be at fault will have any and every federal regulatory body tasked with monitoring the practice come down hard on them, as they have done so in the past.

Furthermore, contrary again to what the cultists would like you to believe, the safety trials are anything but sloppy.

GM crops have to undergo extremely thorough and detailed testing before they are deemed safe for public consumption, if any of the tests turn up anything that could be cause for concern, the application is simply denied. This happens on a regular basis, even for the slightest misgivings, they leave nothing up to chance.

@ vanchrian even with those guidelines it still gets out and causes trouble.

@vanchrian way to totally misunderstand the purpose of those regulations. They are meant to fatten the wallet of corporations selling the seeds. You have to pay for every single crop that has those genes, even if your crop got those genes accidentally.

@Anon 16:35 Way to be anti-GM cultist. There is no grands conspiracy.

Do the GM companies charge for their seeds in order to make a profit? Of course they do, they wanna make money.

Does it have anything to do with the regulatory bodies and the legislation in place to monitor the practice? Absolutely zilch.

If any crop that was not supposed to have the gene is suddenly found to have the gene, then it sparks off an investigation because the stuff is supposed to be controlled. If the farmer is found to be at fault then he's made to pay the price, if some other party is at fault then that party is made to pay in some way or another, including if it happens to be the GM Company.

If you honestly care so much about it then go read up on all the regulation and legislation involved. Its embarrassing to read cultists screaming conspiracy nonsense.

@Char Yeah, accidents happen I'm afraid. I haven't been following up on the investigation of the whole thing.

Are the investigation results out yet? Or is it still on-going?

There have been zero deaths or illnesses or other unhealthy side effects from GMO's here in America. Just saying.

The entire scientific community says it's just as risky as eating organic.
