In what has been decried by more traditional fans as yet another overbearing attempt to expand their audience to include the fairer sex, Namco Bandai has unveiled yet another game in its Idolm@ster Mobage line entitled “Idolmaster SideM” – likely bound to open old wounds with the seething otaku hordes still moaning about Idolmaster 2’s former fiasco.

The game is planned to follow suit with Cinderella Girl’s hugely successful card based “gameplay”, with clear hopes that the combination of mobile, social and fujoshi will be anything but a rotten one.

No, I'm pretty sure letting people acquire what they want without hurting anyone else is when money actually does good. In case you haven't noticed, it's kind of what makes idols possible at all.

This is true, but it's not only money, but markets. Or to use a less money oriented word, demographics. Basically any creator wants the most people to enjoy their world. The issue is when you attempt to appeal to more and more people you run the risk of destroying the feeling that enhanced it with those who grew to love it. So it's a teetering on the cusp of losing those who hold you in balance, your loyalty, and drawing in new blood to enjoy the world you've created. If you tip the balance too quickly, the 'weaker' new blood may not be able to maintain the loyalty and your franchise falls faster than normal basically.
In cases like this, spin-offs of established franchises are a special circumstance, because when you have a bunch of games give off the same feeling, and then have a game that radically redirects that feeling, you begin affecting peoples' trust in the world and where it's going. Radical shifts make people nervous and it's on the creator to ease them into it.
The Fujoshi demographic notwithstanding, women do deserve to have the idolm@ster feel, however if they do it in a way that forces them to change the female characters then they can cause issues on their own creation.
It's all perception of the audience, but that doesn't mean the audience is at fault for being concerned about where something goes. Orson Scott Card has to this day stated the best writing quote I've ever heard, and if anyone follows it, I have never seen it fail: "Give the audience what they want, but not in the way they expect." If they can do something fun with the guys to unify them with the girls, then this CAN enhance Idolm@ster even more. There will be some guys who lose their waifus but... well... I'm sure they have some research on how profitable those people are in that market already :P

@Jungle Evil - yeah, I think the best anime fans are at anime cons! I'm so glad I decided to finally go to one in 2012 and since then I've been to many. I somehow am able to talk to both guys and girls with ease at cons, just like we're all good old friends and nothing more or less. It's great that we represent our fandoms well where it really matters. I guess assholes usually hide behind their computers and anonymity online.
I find that most female anime fans are usually cool (really cool <3), but the fact can't be hidden that there are the loud and vocal minority of haters even among our own female anime fan ranks. But the real problems are coming from totally non-anime fans who criticize anime yet haven't really even given it a fair chance to be understood.
There's loud haters on both sides of the fence that love to perpetuate a lack of understanding, intolerance and hatred for each other. People just can't seem to live and let live.
