Even the most pessimistic expectations of the upcoming Patlabor live action movie have already been shattered by the release of the first trailer for the production…
The trailer, rapidly proving even less popular than feared:
The first film in what is to unmercifully be a two-part production opens in April.

Am I the only one who's looking forward to this thing everyone is crapping about?
No. It looks to me like it'll be way truer to the manga and TV series than to Oshii's grim movie adaptations. That's a great sign to me, though Oshii is still involved in this, so that could just be a feint to make us believe there's some amount of levity or humanity in it.
Yeah, really looking forward to this now.
I enjoy the PATLABOR TV series and the OVAs (particularly THE NEW FILES, which are really just bonus episodes for the TV series continuity) and the trailer looks about as good as I can reasonably hope a Japanese-made live-action PATLABOR production can look.
I mean, I doubt I'll like it nearly as much as the anime (especially since, from what I understand, characters from the anime other than Shige will at most have cameos as older versions of themselves), but I wasn't cringing at anything I saw in this trailer, so that's gotta count for something.
looks cool to me.
Looks like a budget high school play, complete with chunky foam props and bad acting.
I think it looks good, I don't understand a word of Japanese but it even sounds good too.
Looks exactly like what I expected to see of anything that Mamouro Oshii has had a hand in.
No Oshii is not a director; he fucking sucks. His characters are just as one dimensional, if not more so, than the moe-blobs people bitch about. But instead of being cute, they just sit around brooding: My life sucks, why am I not successful, what is reality. All the fucking time! only broken up by the occasional round of violence.
I did watch some patlabor better called pat-la-boring. Including movies.
He's like the Phil-Collins of anime.
How is this trailer even remotely indicative of anything Oshii? Did you watch the trailer? What part of the trailer communicated anything even close to what you could possibly call "brooding"?
This is closer to the levity of the original Patlabor series and WAY off of Oshii's darker films...
I don't even
Yeah IDK what he's on about, but he does have a point about oshii's characters. I do think they're amazing but yeah some of them are kinda just brooding and don't display any other emotions. Same goes for the GitS movie.
also Phil Collins is great :<
I rather a live action Tank Police.
I would kill for a Dominion revival! Anything but 3D CGI though.....ugh TANK SWAT 01 was atrocious.
Japan should stick to two things when involving live action.
1.Tokusatsu (Super Sentai, Kamen Rider, Kaiju, etc).
2.JAV
You forgot Japanese Horror movies.
Exactly.
Outside of those two, just stick to anime Japan, you can't act/direct.
Obviously you don't watch Jdrama...
and another thing you don't understand you moron, the majority of anime is not from japan. a good example would be the anime One Piece, its made by Toei Phils (that's not Philadelphia, that's Philippines)and more than half of Pierriot Studio are just Korean artist. so please STFU b4 you embarrassed yourself
There's acting in Jdramas ?
Are you fucking kidding me ?
Usually the only proper actor is the dog or goldfish if any..
Anime based live action movie are always awkward...
Well awkward = hideous = pretty baddddd
compared to the Western Live action?... Japanese live action is golden
Perhaps so, but you're also equally retarded for trying to greentext.
Anyone here actually watched Dragonball Evolution or Avatar Last AirBender? Compared to them, live actions movies like Rurouni Kenshin and Ace Attorney are awesome
>Japanese live action is golden
Hahahahaha.
Are you retarded?
I don't get it.... What's wrong with it?
Lol, where the hell was the battling :P Didnt see any fights. But it looked like it will have a lot of humor. But why does Japanese stuff , in the Live Action. Sometimes look so cheap, its a big economy so surely it has lots of decent SFX.
It's a good thing that they are capable of creating good anime..because they suck at live-action. Cringe-worthy, fakeish, amateurish. Sentai stuff isn't really tongue-in-cheek and stylized...it's the maximum they are actually capable of acting. Funny actaully. You'd think that a civilization of polite-acting, socially repressed people would have a larger spectrum of acting out their fantasies.
Sadly, I agree. But I think a lot of that is because the better actors and directors would rather do straight up drama, comedy, horror or romance.
They've made some pretty good movies in those genres.
Sci-fi or anime/manga adaptations just don't have the prestige so you end up getting the B-movie guys to screw it up.
That Mech is gonna fall apart like this film. Made in Japan quality...
My Nissan's have never failed me. One of them is 10 years old and still runs great.
Sure beats American engineering....
unless you talk Boeing.
Standard Japanese directing stuff, but was any expecting Patlabor to not be about people just stuffing around in the station? 80% of the series was dedicated to that stuff.
learn to michael bay you silly japs
diam la u all ang mo shit...
Previews make it look more like a comedy than a drama..
The final nail has been put in the Hollywood coffin. If you take the spirits and brewery industries as an example a renaissance is taking place due to exports to China, so if Chinese moviegoers ever get tired of watching actors with round eyes and over simplified movie scripts, it only seems reasonable that a 1 billion plus audience would gravitate towards the superior product coming out of Japan with corresponding benefits to the anime industry.
so aside with this supporting and bashing shit, where to download this? then I can decided which side to take
Looks a bit campy and trip back to the '80s. Not sure if I see a problem since that's what defined Patlabor for me in the first place.
The quality is like high school
It's missing the "Made in China" and "Made in 1991" Logos ... here is a Pro tip .. If they make a movie like that with japanese people in it then At Least do it in the style of FF: The Spirits Within .. that way it would look a lot better and not as cheap because this just makes me worry and give me flashbacks of the power rangers and godzilla in the ways of quality
You do know that Spirits Within was made by Squaresoft(now Squareenix) America don't you?
Um... I honestly don't see what everyone's problem with it is. Sure, the robot effects are lousy, but what would you be expecting, Pacific Rim? Besides, Patlabor has always been driven more by plot than mindless mecha-smashing action and those could be really good. No way of knowing yet.
Look like any other live-action... why'd you expect more?
“Even Worse Than Feared”
O_o
What are you talking about Artefact?
Looks like Patlabor to me... if you expected full action that's your problem. Did you even watch the movies?
Office comedy with awkward, super stiff, non moving Patlabor. And some mop action.
wtf. need more gritty police drama.
They could have gone at it with a nice angle from the 2nd or 3rd film and focused more on detective drama plots. Shame they went full blown comedy dickery.
Babble Babble Babble Babble.
Hey this looks great. Why is it being bashed?
Oshii's movies where great, but SV2 and the Labor's themselves took a back seat to the plot. I liked the manga and the TV and OVA series a lot more. This movie doesn't look too bad. Just don't make it like Oshii's movies. I want some labor action this time.
Giant mecha with a revolver
SRLY
Shit. Why they dont just make it anime remake or 3d
They're trying to compete with Hollywood comic book movies.
"comic book"
GTFO you shitty ignorant westerner
Says the self-hating "shitty ignorant Westerner" that doesn't realize they also call manga コミック "komikku" in Japan...
I guess it was cheaper the live action one?
Well, it sure looks cheap...
