I must be a sexist, because I thought this was disgusting and when I see otakus celebrating some cute 2D characters birthday I have thought before "that looks like fun" or "So nice" etc.
Nah man, the typical K-ON birthday stuff is like a couple figures, a laptop with wallpaper on the screen, and a cake in front of it. Half of those photos look like stalker/cult level obsession.

Like you say, when the male otaku do the celebration, it involve some cakes, picture on monitor screen, perhaps some figurine as well. Feels like a real birthday celebration, just nobody else is around.
On the above picture, aka fujiyoshi way of celebration, its like they are worshiping the character, with the candles and the dark room. It as if they are witches trying to do dark magic ritual.
Other point is, Fujiyoshi place setting is clustered/so messy, and I'd say too many item lying around on the table or whatever the picture taken from.
