Retro FF13 “Might Even Have Been Worth Playing Like This!”

ff13-retro-1

ff13-retro-3

The tortured hopes of Final Fantasy fans have been dashed yet again, this time by a rather well-received SNES-styled “retro-spective” recap of the Final Fantasy XIII story released to help players make sense of the storyline of Lightning Returns.

The trailer:

ff13-retro-1

ff13-retro-2

ff13-retro-3

ff13-retro-4

ff13-retro-5

ff13-retro-6

ff13-retro-7

It seems to have secured a somewhat more positive reaction than the original, at least:

“What the hell…”

“Shame it is just a PV recap.”

“I want it.”

“The 8-bit version looks more fun than the original.”

“It looks godly, if you just look at this!”

“I would actually have pre-ordered this…”

“Die Square Enix, die.”

I wish the entire game was like this, it 'might' be worth playing then

So it's the graphics and sound that make the game bad? What about the crappy characters and BS plot? Kinda shallow to think it might be redeemable by appealing to the SNES generation, as if it were the limitations of the previous consoles that made the past games good.

Though one could argue that by proxy the limitations made developers to focus on more important things, instead of disregarding everything else to toss out more eyecandy.
But the pile of crap that is XIII is out already, so turning it into a SNES port won't do a thing.

No it was the gameplay that was horrible (at least for me).

FF stories are always convoluted or confusing, no point griping there. But turned based party combat was perfected with ABS, the auto pilot gameplay in 13 might as well been a movie given the degree of interaction most of the game required. And, while one long hallway may be forgiven in the 8-bit, 2 discs of nothing but hallway and cutscenes are unforgivable in modern gaming.

Hold on, that guy is still right.

It isn't the SNES graphics that would have made this game better, it's better because they cut out the awful character interactions and dialogues.

that comment alone proves that the billions of fans of video games in general who say: "why won't they innovate?" are just hypocrites.

derpherp ff6 quality? is SNES chiptune man.
snes chiptune was known to be the first video game to have orquestral emulation of sounds in their console. in the video they used is completely differente type of genre, inclusively chiptune

    is mixed 8-bit and 16bit...

some parts uses only 8bit Frequencies
Sometimes uses 16bit (most of times in battles)

Is easy to notice by the frequencies that are used.

But most parts of the video uses 8bit..

Someone on the board said they should go back to the basics and start again ..
I think they overreacted .. Look on the bright side no one can complain the port of the game can get worse than that ..

No, 13 sucks. From the beginning to the open-world was a borefest. The characters were completely uninspiring. The ENG voice actors were 6/10 at best. Every character, save for the woman with the spear was/is an idiot. Lightning was/is a bitch and I felt NO reason to continue the game simply because of her. The black dude was a horrible attempt at comic relief AND his running animation was horrible (what is this, the 60's and 70's?).

Oh, and the soundtrack was horrid. Simply horrid. With the fate of so many people hanging in the balance, we're forced to endure music better suited to low-key gameplay or maybe a cutscene or two. Nope, overworld music.

I put myself through to the open-world part because I really wanted see what the game was like. I'm glad I only paid $20 for it. I'll give it credit, though. It's a very pretty game and the action is flashy and nice to watch.

Well, blame the board of management, because they decide everything.
Never blame the developers and their teams, as they have to work so often under tight deadlines, which isn't funny.

I have read once, that the new custom of SE is to prohibit original ideas and thoughts? I cannot find the article anymore. Is there something true to this?

Hey, you can call it an awesome if you like, but not a game. I've played visual novels with more player interaction. Would have been better as a movie without the pretend "battles" that I went to the toilet during and still won.

Except there is no promise of exploring to speak of, in this movie. It's just a recap done in the style of the 16-bit games, sound-effects, and battle system.

And those alone seem to elicit: "If only the game were like this, I'd play it!"

I'm not saying I don't empathize, nostalgia is one powerful drug (I'm currently pondering going back and playing Chrono Trigger and Cross).

It's always the same. Disliking the characters is one thing, but they weren't bad characters, just not as good as they could have been. I personally enjoyed them, even though of course I've seen better.

The issue is people keep complaining about the 'hallway' as if they actually know what the difference is. Everyone loved the hallway in FFX and FF7 and all of them, but suddenly people prematurely post pictures of minimaps that look boring, and everyone leaps on a bandwagon like always.

As usual, if people don't like the characters, understandable, if they don't like the setting, that works too people have different likes, if they think that 'a hallway' is an accurate description, then all I can say is don't read a book or watch a movie. Because they're all hallways and it's only expectations of something being something it's not that ruined it as is always the case, not the game itself. Game was damn good. Not perfect by a long shot, maybe not even great even though I felt it was in many ways, but it was damn good for what it was despite its admitted flaws. People have forgotten what it is to get out of their own ass these days.

Disagree 100%, I hated FFXIII because I hated the characters. I saw through the "new" combat system right away and I didn't mind one bit. The characters sucked, and made it a horrible experience. Being able to like 2 out of 6 is not good especially when one of those characters becomes playable fairly late in the game.

Can't disagree they weren't strong character. Vanille I became more fascinated with because the bitch somehow picked up a god damn yo-yo deer antler from a pillar in a random location and somehow is a fuggin' expert in the god damn thing. I mean, that short-circuited my brain so much, and I realized something was off.

I couldn't hate the game, because it did a good job overall, but ever since that point I was suspicious. It took a while to realize the major issue with the game was the writer wasn't good enough to get the information from the codex seamlessly into the story. That right there I will never argue against, they failed. The other failure was not releasing full combat control earlier.

Those are the only two things I'll never ever say were good choices. The characters weren't bad though, just archetypal. People have forgotten that that doesn't make them bad, just not new. We've come to create such expectations to the point that we can't bring ourselves into pace with the worlds right in front of us and enjoy them. A few scenes knocked me out of character enjoyment, which happens, but I didn't let it kill the entire experience.

Come on House, of course everything has a certain amount of linearity required to tell a story. FF13 is a -literal- hallway with a mess of a story, plot, characters, music. Everything about it is terrible with exception to the graphics. It's Advent Children on a game console.

Square DID try new things. The new things were called Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIV.

That's why people want Square to recycle the old.
