The guy is (mostly) useless because this is a genderflip series. Why do you think she calls him "princess"? Just substitute the big, strong, stoic guy for a big (breasted) strong, stoic girl. The easily-captured damsel in distress is instead the easily-captured "worthless guy". The scene where he's upset to the point of crying because she got hurt protecting him is straight out of any action manga from twenty years ago. Just moe-ify the bad guys into high school girls and you've got it.
