Comment on Outrage at Kennedy’s “Stop Killing Dolphins!” Tweet by Anonymous:

Except that’s simply not the case. While it WAS the case for a handful of species, half a century ago (mostly due to high demand for oil from American and European industry, not food use in Asia, I might add), the fact is most species were not yet in danger when the moratorium went into effect, and most of the others have rebounded since then. No cetacean species is in danger of being hunted to extinction today. The species whose stocks are that badly depleted are protected, even under Japanese regulations, and the species being actively hunted are all abundant. There are strict quotas, are the species are being scientifically managed the same way that we manage game animals (such as deer, bear, and turkeys) in America.

As regards the humaneness, even in America, we allow Indian and Eskimo tribesmen to hunt these animals. The 2ch comments to the effect that there is racism at work here are spot on: it’s okay, in the eyes of the American sociopolitical elite, for “barbarous,” “backward,” natives who to kill and eat these animals, but not for any people that wants to be considered a “civilized” race.
