Puella Magi Madoka Magica has won an Academy Award (or a Japan Academy Prize at any rate), and may yet be declared the most worthy anime movie of 2013.
2013’s 5 “Excellent Animation of the Year” awards go to Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion, Captain Harlock and Lupin III vs Conan.
Unsurprisingly two awards also went to Ghibli works, with Kaguya-hime no Monogatari and The Wind Has Risen both getting awards.
Just which of the five will win the “Animation of the Year” overall prize will only be announced in March, although with no less than two Ghibli titles in contention puella magi Madocchi et Homura’s chances of success look slim.

I expected The Wind Rises to be snubbed for treading on politically sensitive grounds. It paints Japan as an economically weak and technologically backwards nation, victims of the second World War, ignoring the atrocities committed by the Japanese. It managed to anger both the political right and political left, anger both pro- and anti-war groups, anger both Japanese and Koreans.
because no one likes to be reminded of the sucky reality when they watch anime.
It's because they failed to distract the crowd with lolis and gundams.
It was also the most successful movie in Japan last year.
No such thing as bad publicity.
wow whatta boobies
Madoka now playing mahjong as Nodoka
We already saw that she could instantly grow out her hair, so increasing the size of other parts of her body aren't out of the question. She is God, after all.
yet it still got snubbed at the oscars. seriously, losing to the croods? despicable me 2?
As much as I'd have liked it to, I wasn't expecting Madoka to be nominated considering the Oscars are run by a bunch of xenophobic old bastards who probably run on the mentality of "we gave one to Ghibli, now leave us alone!" At least these nominees are halfway decent (though I didn't find Despicable Me 2 to be as good as its predecessor). Had it lost to the likes of Smurfs 2, then that would've been rage-worthy.
Frozen will get the award if it in the category. No chance anything else will
but the Croods really suck to me.I could eventually blame those crood-codile,meat-hungry producers and yep,Oscars too for being biased.
Or maybe because the Academy members aren't NEET otaku who worship anime characters and celebrate their "birthdays" with cakes decorated like them.
99.9% of Americans don't care about anime.
99.9% of Americans think you are stupid.
Sturgeon law: "90% of everthing is crap."
To qualify for the U.S. Oscars, a movie must play in Los Angeles. The Wind Rises qualifies for the Oscars because it was played in a single theater in Los Angeles for one week last November. It doesn't matter if it's released in Japan or even Cannes, it does not qualify unless it's been released in Los Angeles. It doesn't even matter what year a movie is made or released in, it only matters when it was first played in Los Angeles, and some movies advance or delay being shown in Los Angeles is order to change which year's Oscars they compete in (Hurt Locker did this). Those are the rules.
Madoka did have an international airing that I assume happened in la since it happened in vancouver canada >>. Eg. it should qualify but Im not really suprised it didnt.
NO! I will NOT accept this. This fucking piece of epic shit does NOT deserve ANY kind of recognition what-so-ever! IT NEEDS TO FUCKING DIE ALREADY!
Madoka Movie is truly a great one and deserves the award. The plot is also very unpredictable, and very shocking and unexpected twist for the ending. They really retains the mystery and surprise element of the series. Well done Madoka!!
this title almost gave me a heart attack, thinking how the American Academy Awards could go so low (at it's already low point to begin with). Title misleading as fuck.
I suppose I could get the appeal... if you are a sadistic freak who equates depth with torturing little girls..
If that's the only thing you got from Madoka, then you might want to look in the mirror for that sadistic freak of yours.
?
Meanwhile, the actual Academy Awards (the Oscars) nominated The Wind Rises, the only anime movie on the list.
And the only anime movie critics and the general public (i.e. non-otaku) cared about.
It can't win any academy awards, only gay actors and actresses and gay producers can win there. its all rigged.
This is part of why I hate the Film Actors' Guild.
You forgot to mention that they should be ill, or have problems with drugs, or be black. Or all of the above.
The Academy Awards aren't in the business of nominating productions from outside Hollywood that aren't played much in the USA. Hell, they don't even consider fantasy or sci-fi movies important enough unless they make Lord the Rings money.
As films like Madoka gain more acceptance, they will have to accept them. But they won't, and it's got nothing to do with anything except that the Oscars are a prize for old insiders run by old insiders. If they weren't then they wouldn't be the Oscars.
My Mamies are happy.
I haven't watched the series yet, i guess it was good? She looks like MoMo from Xenosaga playstation 2 games to me.
Madoka is the only full length series I have ever watched in a single sitting. Just couldn't tear myself away.
Watch out for anonymongs posting spoilers though.
Absolutely watch this series. Only 12 episodes, and very powerful at that. Try to avoid spoilers and you'll have a great time.
i'll save you some trouble, the little white rat thing is evil and the series is really dark despite it looking like a regular magic girl kinda show. very dark, lots of twists and lots of little girls dying. don't watch it, unless you like watching little girls dying.. you sick fuck.
I watch it for the plot.
Little Girls dying?
FUCK I NEED TO WATCH AND FAP TO THAT.
yeah, this show is disgusting
I love how this series makes you wonder when Madoka will become a magical girl each episode, then by the time you know she will become one, you're like fuck no, don't do it, noooooo.
Whatewer. I'm just checking Ernest & Celestine now.
I, too, don't hold much love for the anime in itself, yet the Opening blew me away. Almost as good as good as the one from Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaete mo Omaera ga Warui!.
Edit: My bad, what I meant was the ending song.
I really haven never been able to understand what all the fuss is about with this anime. I get that it appears to be happy magic girls but ends up being darker, and I agree that it's definitely unique in that respects, but it certainly wasn't enjoyable for me. It seems as though these people are in the same mindset as a lot of creators of "modern art" in which unique is synonymous to good, meaning that "art" like shitting in a can is considered brilliant simply because it hasn't been done before.
Not all art is for everyone. "Doesn't appeal to me" =/= "it's bad".
Nice strawman you got there.
apparently you've never heard of an opinion...
Madoka's story is heavily based on Goethe's Faust, a famous tragic play, which in turn is based on a famous German folk tale.
Kyuubei is the Devil's messenger Mephistoles, and the Witches take their names from the play's characters and other famous literature writings. The runes that appears in the show are not just gibberish and actually have a meaning: they translate into quotes from Goethe's Faust.
So it's not just your anti-mahou-shoujo-show.
I hate this show. They took the genre of magical girls, which I enjoy, and shat all over it, twisting everything good about it into something dark and evil and horrible.
I figure that's why so many like it -- they hate magical girl shows, and here's one that shits all over the entire concept. Well, they can roll in their waste all they like, and may they be welcome to it.
Nanoha and Precure's success is that they went from magical girls to Kamen Rider action.
agreed.. I mean, who wants to a bunch of cute girls get brutally killed? It's liking killing a kitten, why? Serial killer material, this is...
People don't like it just because it turned dark. They like it because turning dark was just about the last thing anyone expected from a show that looked every bit like the stereotypical magical girl show on the surface, and then went on to execute the dark aspects in an enthralling way rather than just for the shock factor.
The third movie, dude. It's NOTHING like the TV series. They really turned the universe into something even more awesome. You can't compare the third movie anytihng else @Madoka Magica@.
Nuh - NOOOOoo-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-uh!!!!
I love how the series makes you wonder when Madoka will become a magical girl, then when its clear shes going to become one, you're like nooo don't do it, nooooooo.
