Final Fantasy fans have been busily debating the merits of Square Enix’s suitably enhanced port of Final Fantasy VI to lucrative and reassuringly non-HD Android platform.
The game, available in English and Japanese amongst other languages, is based on the 1994 SNES original but dumps its pixelated designs in favour of new designs – though they are still by Kazuko Shibuya, the artist who designed the originals.
The reaction amongst Japanese gamers looks mixed to say the least:
“Looks cheap as hell.”
“Keeping it pixelated would have been a million times better.”
“It is forgivable I suppose.”
“Looks like something made with an RPG maker…”
“At least we can make fun of it.”
“Pixel art really has a different feel to it.”
“It’s a lot cuter now though!”
“I could cry comparing this to FF5…”
“The mismatch between the retro environments and the new character graphics is overpowering.”
“I hope it is not buggy rubbish like FF5 was.”
“The art is nice but completely out of place in this game.”
“As long as it has Amano’s art!”
On Android?! That just confuses me.
That character artwork toward the bottom of the article is from the original SNES release, so I don’t know why it’s here.
i dont care what they do, but they should give you the option to play the unaltered original (wich im guessing they dont) well ill keep using emulators
Man…it’s so sad to see Square Enix clinging into old games like this…it’s like they’re breathing on life support…
Everything has to be moe these days. There would be nothing wrong with keeping them either in their original or at least not making them “cute”. I’m not a fan of this.
