Gundam creator Yoshyuki Tomino is said to be on the verge of announcing a full blown Hollywood adaptation of the Gundam franchise.
Los Angeles based special effects studio “Legacy Effects,” best known for their work on the likes of Iron Man, Avatar and Pacific Rim, is said to be planning a project “to bring Hollywood movies based on Japanese anime and manga titles to a global audience,” with the first title to be announced by Tomino on a press conference scheduled for the 21st.
Astonishingly, online speculation has centered on just which franchise will be adapted (assuming this is indeed what will be announced), rather than how bad a mess Hollywood will make of it, perhaps signalling a Hollywood Gundam may yet be in with a chance – in Japan at least.

No,no,no,no,no,no, don't try to put Japanese thing in your movie, Hollywood.
Pacific Rim.
Pacific Rim was bad, everybody know sthat. But then again this place filled with trolls.
lol pacific rim was better than any live action shit japan can do.
Lmao, Pacific Rift was pretty good you fucking Troll.
You're just grumpy it took the White Supremacy (and a fatass Mexican) to properly do bigscreen kaijus, where the Nips have failed for decades with cheesy costumes and one-use miniature cardboard towns.
Pacific Rim is a movie that knows its silly but ignores it for the sake of being FREAKING AWESOME!!!!!
I dont say we should get our hopes up, but imagine if they do make a fucking Awesome trilogy of Gundam Movies based on the Original Trilogy with Char's Counterattack as a fourth movie... Damn... Imagine if the manage to pull off a motherfucking UC franchise.... Dream about a really damn awesome Crossbone Gundam Movie, or Victory (A.K.A Slaughterland) Gundam..... Try to be positive, at least until the first trailer arrives and we find out is bullshit...
I like your avatar (//A///)
Just give them a chance? It's better than none, plus Gundam has been sucking as an anime series lately anyways.
You may consider Pacific Rim to be bad, but it made talking about the possibility of live action Gundam possible.
There's a DIFFERENCE.
One is a series, the other a movie.
One is told over ten hours, the other in less than three.
One theme has ONE main character while another has arguably more than one. How are you going to develop all of them? Another Fantastic Four Flop?
realy? It was so bad it was....bad. As a mecha fan i did not like it and i am not alone. Most of people who liked it were those nonotaku who like every shity USA blockbuster like transformers or twilight no matter how bad it is
some one give this one the vision and the voice to speak to his neighbors right next door and see what mean things they write. he does not know them at all and thus his view is not even tainted; it is not even formed. it can not be untrue if it is based on nothing
Well, you're a retard then. Amazed you can even call yourself a mecha fan with a straight face if you hated Pacific Rim. It was awesome and you're a moron if you didn't like it.
Sucked. Big time.
agreed, who ever had fun?
I had fun once :(
It was awful :(
Agreed. Like you, I also hate fun.
i support you bro
Oh boy. I can't wait to see the epic fight between Adam Ray and Charles Aznable.
I'll bite.
I'm...not sure. As a fanboy, I both squee and cringe at the prospect of a live action Gundam movie.
Please don't fuck this up.
They are gonna fuck this up, aren't they?
Of course not! They didn't fuck up Dragonball Evolution, did they?
That are completely different genres.
they fucked up dragonball z and avatar the last airbender so they will probably fuck up gundam as well
I don't see Uwe Boll in the shortlist to direct it... yet.
.... talking about is allredy fucked it up.. now we just have to see how badly
Ok who's the murica troll? Taylor are you there?
live action a shit
agree. Live Action is shit. However, what if they are actually thinking about Full blown CGI.. like Appleseed.
Then it would be even worse.
At least with cgi in movies it doesn't seem completely out of place and fake.
cgi in all animes especially mecha ones looks like absolute garbage compared to hand drawn.
Pacifim Rim looked DAMN good.
Pacific Rim looked good. But it sucked overall. It probably gained only from the concept. There is little else there besides taking two people to run a Giant Robot. GR!
Ah, Anon 7:23 beat me to it, but we've already seen both situations.
G-Savior was live action. The Mobile Suits were all CGI. It is in fact canon (though if you really hate it that much, you can say it's Alternate UC canon).
As for 100% pure CG - isn't most anime done with CG anyway? - we had the MS igLoo series. The characters were really distracting with their too shiny skin, glossy teeth and eyes and awkward facial animation, but anything mechanical looked glorious. Kinda reminds me of the opening to GitS: SAC. The plot was a bit weird, but I really enjoy any additional non-Amuro UC stories that I can get.
Like someone else mentioned, though, if it's good I'll pay money to see it, and I'm tempted to see what they wind up doing just on that chance. Having said that, I still own my copy of G-Savior, even though I think it's atrocious.
Additional disclaimer: I saw Pacific Rim in an XD Theater. Didn't particularly care for it, but it did look cool.
still shit. it'd just be like berserk; soulless & uneventful
It won't be at all related to Gundam. Tomino may have created it, but he no longer owns Gundam, and even if he did, I doubt he'd do anything more with it that he already has, and just call it trash like he has been doing since the first series ended, and then he would let it rot while he moves on to something else that he will give the same treatment to once he's finished with it. Gundam is now almost exclusively owned by Sunrise and Bandai, who have a notoriously strong strangle hold on it, and they won't let anyone do anything with it unless they call almost all the shots. Unfortunately, that's one of the main reasons why Gundam failed in the US even after Wing's initial success.
please no. giant mechs like pacific rim ok.
but there is no way hollywood can make a gundam movie. gundam has a universe, history, characterization that is important. its not just big mechs fighting one another
Gundam has many alternate universes, so what is your problem? There are many horrible iterations of gundam as well. I want to see what holliwood can do with it and even if it's bad, it's not gonna do anything to the franchise as it is anyways.
It's fine, if the new generation starts to know gundam through this, then the franchise will lengthen benefiting us in the process. Ride the hype about robots, there's no telling when it'll be over anyway
Guess they haven't anything from G-Saviour
@coolball
Scriptwriter is not a main point for Gundam.
its actually what Anon 7:24 said is true.
The political aspects could be handled by hollywood if a good scriptwriter is used.
Scriptwriter is key, everyone forgets that. The mech battles are not usually very impressive except in modern times. It's the reason behind the fight.
if they get the right director. No offence but Asians aren't really the greatest at directed adaptations of things.
Example:
Dragonball Evolution - James Wong
The Last Airbender - M. Night Shyamalan
compare it to Transformers by Micheal Bay (may not be the best but at least its watchable) or Pacific Rim (even though it's its own thing).
Hollywood just needs to get the right people and not just blindly pick someone.
The only thing watchable about Transformers is Megan Fox, and that's the only reason people watch and defend that movie. The rest is akin to watching scrap metal in a washing machine window.
Hollywood used to make good movies, but that was a long fucking time ago. Like with games, all that matters now is fapping their technological epeen and flashing pretty visuals at brainless audiences.
unless, like me, you dislike Megan Fox. Least the girl in the third was cute.
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley....yeah she was pretty cute in the movie. When she told Megatron how he was a bitch, i was like yeah, thats some hot acting there! Pacific Rim told too much in too little time. Could have easily been a trilogy and got the story more involved. Fun to watch but the story went by too fast. I think it would have been alot more enjoyable with the first movie being the struggle with first encounter of the kaiju, the nations uniting and developing the GRs, race to who will fight off the Kaiju, finishing the movie with a first and of course difficult win and to leave it open for the next part of the storyline.
i love it when anon on the internet say things like megan fox, that is the only reason people watch and defend that movie. you do not know me internet. i happen to really fucking love fight scenes. if megatron and optimus prime decide they want to start up some muay thai and shoryuken shit, then the ticket price was worth at least that, and i say that not even as a transformers fan
Not to mention Megan Fox just looks like a bad pornstar. I was always confused as to why everyone felt she was so hot. She just looks like your average bitchy looking woman. Hell, she looks awful now though. I more or less could not tell which was worse, Shia LeBeouf's all encompassing gargantuan nose (and shit acting skills) or the hormonal delusional beings known as fans of Megan Fox.
Other than that, the movie was kind of just your average flick for people with low attention spans. Flashy explosive fun...
Nah,most fanboys wants to hear Peter Cullen's voice again like 'TRANSFORM AND ROLL OUT.' Anyhoo, there's a short GUNDAM live action shown years ago.
Who the fuck cares about the bitch, most were enthralled by giant robots fucking each other up.
> giant robots fucking each other
Whatever floats your boat i guess.
Guillermo del Toro...he showed us Pacific Rim, he can do this.
Directed by Michael Bay.
All explosions and no story
@Fayt: i don't know about you, but if the story isn't even half-way decent to a show/movie i drop it instantly. Doesn't matter if there are tons of explosions.
Just the way mindless otakus like it.
Oh, throw in some little girls in skimpy swimsuits for good measure.
Just the way we like it.
