Square Enix has cancelled one of its planned Hitman games and replaced it with a mobile game, much to the consternation of those who thought its fascination with social games was only being inflicted on its own classic franchises.
Hitman 6 was announced in 2011 and under development at Square Enix Montreal, but it now emerges it was quietly cancelled in 2013 and the team instead re-purposed to producing a mobile Hitman title for Android and iOS.
Although its treatment of its own top franchises is already legend, this marks the first time the far-sighted management genius which has made the company what it is today has been applied to the properties of the former Eidos.
However, Square Enix has helpfully attempted to dispel this “confusion” with the clarification that it was only Square Enix Montreal’s Hitman which was canned, whilst original Hitman developers IO Interactive are still at work on another “AAA” sequel, for now at any rate.

Is mobile phone graphic processing power that strong to match PS4 or Xbox1?
considering their hardware is so weak they cant even do 1080p at 30fps consistently, give it a year and mobiles will be more powerful than both
Phone don't even need the ability to do 1080p.. that extra crispy graphic add so small that I can tolerate it begone.
A better question is can a phone do the same physic, shadow, lightning, polygon count and so on, as good as PC or consoles currently is?
fyi, several tablets (note those are also include in "mobile") have higher resolutions than 1080p
Checked out the new nvidia stuff.Processor that can run Unreal 4 at 20 FPS average.
Still a long way before tablet/phone gonna match PC or Console. Not to mention the price will be steep.
Yeah and that's clocked at full voltage, in consumer terms expect 90% clock down in real products.
In a year or two from now on. But don't get wrong, SE will be making games like they will be played on mobiles from 2005.
Nope. A7, Qualcomm, Tegra, Exynos, all mobile hardware are weak compared to console, PC and laptop. They can't even run benchmarks 1080p at 30fps. For example PowerVR G6430 on Apple's A7 can do only 76.8 gflops or Tegra 4 can do only 74.8 gflops, while lowest gpu on current gen laptop with nVidia 710M can do 307.2 gflops or Intel HD Graphics 4000 can do 294.4 gflops.

mobile cycles are like 6 months, power doubles in each one, a year or two and theyll be there, the consoles are "supposed" to last 10 years
good I'm happy for Enix i hope they keep up the good work.
Not sure if serious?
I... may be proven wrong, but I get the feeling they are mixing demographics. The Japanese are the mobile phone gamers, not the west, and the west would play Hitman... I don't know if that's 100% accurate these days, but this seems just a bad idea. Squareenix going mobile is one thing, it's a simple nature of it being a business move to recover lost revenue, but only in the right regions.
Who cares what some foreigners think?
Yarly, fuck dem arrogant gaijin.
Read properly.
Hitman games is more popular in west, so developing the game on a platform that westerner play the most (PC/consoles) will make more sense.
Since Japanese (that is the main audience of mobile platform) don't play Hitman, making the game on mobile will result in failure.
The Westerner won't play it because its on the mobile, and Japanese won't play it because it didn't suit their taste. Good way to lose even more money, Square Enix.
Is Square enix man, they think equal to the engineers of Microsoft:
-If you have a fluorescent that burned, an electrician change for other, but the microsoft engineers will do a study, conduct tests of millions of dollars and at the end will tell you to all fluorescents works just like that...plop.
Mobile = On you and soon IN you, that's the techno-logic rightful migration.
I found out Half-Life 3 was canceled so valve can make Half-Life mobile
SE, much like Capcom, is currently plagued with execs who don't know shit about gaming.
Maintaining business is one thing, but when each and every creative decision around game development is made only in attempt to rip consumers again and again and again and somehow forgetting that games should be FUN, I think it's time they rethink their hiring practices, because the execs are breaching their area of expertise more often these days and act like they know how a game is supposed to be made when in reality, they know jackshit. Hell, many don't even play videogames.
http://www.cracked.com/article_20727_5-reasons-video-game-industry-about-to-crash.html
Tetsuya Nomura himself said in an interview that keeping FFXV as a console game was an uphill battle between him and the execs armed with charts and shit. Yeah, Nomura basically had to assure them that he's gonna make FFXV so good that it'll outperform those fucking suits' expectations.
http://www.p4rgaming.com/tetsuya-nomura-spent-3-months-convincing-square-enix-not-to-move-final-fantasy-xv-to-smartphones/
...That, or sneaking in some DLC.
What FFXV will become remains to be seen, but you have to realize that Nomura is among the last few of the old-schoolers from Squaresoft days. If FFXV underperforms in sales, they might force him to resign, and the exodus of talents will continue.
Square Enix is dead to me.
I'm actually even more curious to see how they adapt over time now. Especially when they are seeking to let a western developer do a Final Fantasy. If anyone with any brains is part of that, they will take what they learned during the failure of the last time it was tried, and make it work. They need only to write the story in Japanese style with some subtle western tweaking, while making the gameplay a bit more western with the Japanese tweaking, and it will maintain an audience while expanding it. As usual they just need to not pander, because that has too much risk of backfiring.
If Squall, Cloud, or any other main SquareEnix protagonists had elements of Nathan Drake or some of the more memorable western protagonists in them, the variance in personality to adapt to scenarios, the Japanese introspection met with an odd sense of humor in certain moments to show that they have experience enough to not take the world TOO seriously, it will be impressive to the teens and the people who grew up with Square/Enix games alike.
Or we could have Nishio Ishin write a Final Fantasy and genius will fly out his ass and they just have to assemble pretty around it.
They could make a 'manly' Western version, and reskin the characters as girly traps, a la Nier.
They really dislike making money, don't they?
on the contrary, the number of people wanting to play games while on the go is on the rise. it beats a bitter basement troll gamer when it comes to buying games as they pay up front than playing it on a pirated copy.
Sadly, you speak the truth. Triple A is dead, except for GTA and COD.
>COD
>Triple A title
get out
If triple A means triple A profits, then yea.
Mobile game is easier to pirate, its plenty hacked mobile game in internet.
Square Enix also have the resource and financial capability to provide the real game for the real gamer, and not the people that play some crappy game once a week in the train, so why wasting all the potential? Its not like their new customer (casual) care about what Square Enix bring on the table.
Its wiser to do what they successfully done before, make games for the hardcore crowd. The bad sales was because the game quality was declined, not because no demand. So to succeeded like in the past, repair the game itslef. Not change the audience, which Square Enix is doing right now.
Which is stupid, because casual not going to pay lots of money, and not going to stick around longer with Square Enix, because they are not dedicated gamer. So why wasting resource making games for this group?
No. They just obsess over it.
So much that they forget that the point of videogames is to make it fun, not making us run around in a Skinner Box, paying money and grinding for achievements that don't fucking matter.
Good,if you have played the original Hitman 1 & 2 you know it's much better than the sequals 4 & 5. The first two were created by a completely different company and different people than 4 & 5. When will games companies stop labeling a cheap Ford as a Ferrari?
Least the cheap Ford doesn't randomly catch fire. Ferrari a shit.
But then again a cheap Ford's engine can't go fast enough for it to catch fire in the first place.
But when you paid hundred of thousands (or millions) for your Ferrari, you'd expect it not to catch fire for doing something it was supposed to do in the first place, no?
Well, graphics isn't everything.
I seriously hope they can prove that by making some innovative gameplay.
Which is a rather dim light of hope.
I know graphic isn't everything, I also know that some phone, in near future will be able to throw a better graphic than current handhelds/consoles.
Just the touch screen control is too simple(not allowing deeper control) and lacks physical feedback(can't feel the button), and to compensate that bad side many Japanese mobile decide to make card game.. which among worst the gaming genre, ever.
small reminder that the sooner square enix dies, the sooner the licenses can be brought by better people (or their rightful owners)
I wish retards would stop buying mobile micro games and let the market dry up already.
"'Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups." - George Carlin
It will never dry up because the micro-transactions make it a fucking gold mine.
Let's see.. small screen means excuse for low-res, low-functionality, low-quality and low-content games = shorter development and less technical ability.
So... Sqenix can shit out cheap, simple, short games and milk them for DLC. Remind me why they would EVER make a 'AAA game' for high-end consoles or PCs when these are clearly more profitable?
Making games isn't about *care*, emotion or the love of games.. it's a BUSINESS FOR PROFIT. Electronic Arts proves this again and again, why should Squenix be any different?
Why are people buying from EA anywa...
oh.. yeah.. people are dumb.
"Remind me why they would EVER make a 'AAA game' for high-end consoles or PCs when these are clearly more profitable?"
Because that market is being flooded with shitty developers making shitty games, and it's approaching the point of saturation. Even the social gaming market isn't infinite, and since every single software company on the planet is making them now the bubble is going to eventually burst.
squareenix must think the console market is bombing everywhere, that's funny!
Close your doors already!
wtf square-penis ? seriously ? duhhhhh
With Kingdom Hearts 3 and the new FF in the works, I don't give a shit about Hitman anymore, it died after they've been milking the shit out of it, Blood Money was the last straw.
What did you expect from the makers of crap like final fantasy all the bravest ?
Doesn't really matter. For over a decade SE now proved time and again that they can't make good games anymore. All their good at is CG cut scenes and the times where those where impressive are long gone. Now one can just put real animation on the game..
Unless the console market becomes a gold mine once more...
"Io-Interactive is developing a new, AAA Hitman game that will be coming to PC and next-gen consoles and Square Enix Montreal is fully focused on mobile development of games some of which are related to the Hitman franchise. We look forward to sharing more details about these titles later this year."
are they going to make it like another tcg? need energy for every move and bla bla bla
