Miyazaki “Not Retiring After All Again”

Ghibli giant Hayao Miyazaki has – to the surprise of nobody it seems – retracted his latest promise to retire, making it the 7th time he has vowed to quit only to think better of it.
The withdrawal, made in a radio broadcast on New Year’s Eve, marks the 7th such recantation (although by some counts he has done it as many as 10 times).
Starting after Laputa in 1986 and again in 1992, 1997, 2001, 2004, 2008 and now 2013, it now seems a time honoured tradition for him to celebrate his latest blockbuster’s success with a retirement announcement.
Online the usual railery has intensified, with there being some mild relief that his latest “retirement marketing” will not interfere with the prospect of a Nausicaa sequel.

It's called marketing.
What you call marketing, we call trolling.
He can go on troiling as much as he wants...
Could also be a bargaining ploy. Or, maybe the guy is exhausted after the projects, and really feels like retiring at the time, but thinks better after a bit of a rest.
Oh, who am I kidding. The guy's a master troll and we know it. :P
Dude's got more drama sales than the Kardashian's, and to be honest it's no surprise he can get away with this..
Ghibli's art will continue to be shit. Not change I guess.
So many thumbs down? Ghibli's art is mediocre at best but their plot is quite good... to the kids.
Their lack of dark theme is quite disturbing too but i won't complain, i'll just ignore it.
Lack of dark themes? Princess Mononoke says hi, and it adds to the art part too lol
GotF? It's so dark most people's brains refuse to accept exactly how dark it really is, and even then they have the good sense to keep quiet about it.
Grave of the Fireflies says hi, the darkest, most depressing anime movie ever created.
Spirit Away also say hi, with all the weird creature and human pig.
this wad i called successful trolling.
Being right doesn't make it ok to be a dick. Downvotes well deserved, regardless of the validity of the comment.
Miya whats his name is overrated
Neonie must be a retard(i'm not addressing to anybody but him/her/Zerg and needs medical attention like euthanasia.
18:21
that movie didn't even phase me. in fact I found it amusing, that they changed the poop onigiri into dirt onigiri.
Neonie must be a retard and needs medical attention like euthanasia.
Unless he's physically unable to work, he'll keep making movies for as long as he can. He's someone who probably gets new ideas for stories/characters very frequently, and not being able to make them into movies would probably be frustrating, so he'll keep coming back.
lol I guess you are right. Him trying to give up making movies is probably as difficult as some people try to quit smoking...
I bet he saw what his successors were gonna do to his company and was like, "Nooope, I rather die working than to let you scrubs ruin my legacy."
and after 7 times things still look grim
Moeshit successors??
Shameless marketing at its finest.
The real question is how many more times can he get away with it before his reputation goes to crap.
Any flak Miyazaki-Sensei gets for not retiring when he says he will is more than offset by the quality of his movies.
Also, he sent a katana to D*sney with the warning "NO CUTS" when he allowed them to release one of his movies in the US, which is awesome enough on its own that he can go into and out of retirement as often as he likes.
That's true. After Disney ****ed up Ponyo, he said NO MORE CUTS!
Holy shit, he did what?? He went from Nice Wise Grandpa to Badass in my book!
Correction: it's how many times he can get away with it before he REALLY dies.
Miyazaki's reputation pretty much can't go to crap at the moment...I mean really...he could get away with pretty much whatever he wanted to do at his age and with as much success as hes had.
Hasn't his reputation gone to crap?
for what?
top kek
you're probably thinking of his son, whom directed tales of earthsea
or for making shit
for talking shit i gues.
Well, it's not really a surprise.
The only people to "retire" more than Miyazaki are prowrestlers.
He'll only retire... when he dies!!
Oh for fucks sake Ghibli, just make a mecha anime movie! And make Tomino write the story.
You should be asking that to Sunrise. Then they may will make something decent again.
He probably just feels like retiring everytime he finishes working his ass off on a tough project.
Give him some time, and he comes running back to do what he loves.
What if he actually wants to retire, but people keep bugging him to keep going, or he feels like people at ghibli wouldn't do as good without him?
Hideo Kojima had a pretty disappointing experience when he let his team try to make a game without him. The "metal gear rising" made inside Kojima Productions was so disappointing to kojima that he let Platinum Games finish it instead.
"1986 and again in 1992, 1997, 2001, 2004, 2008 and now 2013"
6, 5, 4, 3, 4, 5.
In 2019, he will once again announce retirement.
Come on Sankaku, I can't believe you're missing out on Miyazaki's very click-bait-worthy "anime suffers because the industry is full of otaku" remarks!
Works every time!!
Only bydlo faps on miyazaki
Wow. I haven't been paying too much attention to him lately but I had no idea Miyazaki got this much flak... pretty shocking for me.
Scratch that. I should just say 'Miyazaki gets flack?' Looks like I might as well be living under a rock...
He just needs a break after each movie where he doesn't feel pressured by a corporation so his imagination can work at ease.
Not surprised. Most of those old codgers have never known anything else but their working environment. They literally don't know how to live apart from work anymore. Once they are supposed to leave, they'll just bore themselves to death unless they find themselves back in work again. I for one wouldn't want to end up a slave to work. In a way, those people are pretty dismal in how they would die without their work. No life Japan.
BRAVO!!!
At this rate I think it's a good luck charm of his for Ghibli's future films.
People mock him all the time. Think he's crazy, a crackpot, hates technology, and hasn't made anything good. The truth is he is one of the most intelligent, hard working, thoughtful people in the world.
He works 18 hours a day, 6 days a week for 2 years straight to make one 2 hour movie so people can call it shit. He's dedicated his life to his craft and is a master at it. He puts himself out there and bares his soul to be skewered by armchair critics.
They wouldn't be able to draw one frame, let alone the thousands he personally works on. This is all on top of him storyboarding and writing the entire story and every detail completely on his own in the middle of production and work flow. He also has to manage hundreds of animators, check every drawing, oversee the colour work, approve the sound effects, the mixing, the music, and direct the voice actors. It's a monumental task beyond recognizance unless you've actually been through it.
The shit stains that criticise him will never know how hard it is to do what he does and somehow they still think they're better than him. They're the crazy ones. What a fucking awful and cynical world we live in.
Ride that Miyazaki dick hard. God forbid we ask for something a little more challenging then passé sentimental drivel that we've already seen a hundred times. Even his film about the fucking WWII ended up being a maudlin, trite yawn that wouldn't dare to actually question the ethics of Horikoshi because "he just wanted to fly, man."
Is Miyazaki perfect? No. Has he made some disappointing films? Yes.
But he's still human, flawed, and doesn't deserve personal attacks because he has beliefs and passions you may not like or agree with.
You've had that one ready to go at the first sight of Miyazaki-criticism haven't you?
And your contributions to society are? Probably working minimum wage at McDonald's.
And here we have it ladies and gentlemen, the comeback of the year 2014!
