Shonen Jump Blasts Loli Ban: “Don’t Kill Manga!”

jump-contra-loli-ban

Shonen Jump has finally made a public condemnation of the ongoing efforts of Japanese politicians to “destroy Japanese manga” with their obsessive attempts to brand it child pornography.

The latest edition of Shonen Jump (2014-#3) contains an editorial in which the magazine emphatically states its opposition to recent efforts to get 2D material subject to new laws against child pornography:

1. The law’s insistence on a 3 year “study to determine the harm manga and anime do to children and whether it should be subject to restrictions”

This law should be about protecting actual children from harm. Instead it starts with the dubious presumption that manga and animation can trigger sexual abuse of minors, which has never even been demonstrated.

How is it even possible to consider researching how to censor this material when no factual or objective data about this supposed relationship with sexual abuse even exists in the first place?

Japan’s anime and manga culture is important content which underpins “Cool Japan.”

Because of freedom of expression, Japanese culture has developed into something it can be proud – a law like this would kill that culture, so we oppose it.

2. The criminalisation of “simple possession”

The present definition of “child pornography is exceptionally vague and ambiguous. If it were put into the law, far from protecting the rights of children it would do great harm to all.

People possessing photographs of their own children in swimwear or unknowingly being sent material may become victims of the law.

It is very likely the new law will give rise to many false charges.

These are some of the reasons we oppose the new child porn bill, and readers and writers alike should join hands in opposing it.

Learn how to spell dude? That would be D-U-D-E. Or did you mean "learn how to spell, dude"? Perhaps you should learn how to punctuate.

Also, it is incorrect to use the singular of cartoon here. Is he watching just one cartoon? You should be saying "stop watching cartoons".

Where I live its illegial to poesess Loli pictures whether its anime or not. Apparently some people have already been arressted for it. Its kind of stupid imo to make a law that can effect art like that. I mean its just a cartoon, I don't see the harm considering its not a real person and no real person was used or harmed in its production. To be honest if there was stuff like Loli manga here in canada or in the USA, it would probally sell very well. As much as people would try to deny it would, we all know tons of people would buy it, Probally mostly from sites like amazon and such. I mean how many people these days honestly got the balls to walk into a store and buy porn? probally not many. In the olden days and such, there was 13-14 yr old wives, and no one really had problems with it at the time.

Insted of wasting taxpayer money on trying to stop anime art pictures of underage people from being sold/distrubuted, maybe they should instead focus on real crimes, like drug dealers, people who harm real kids etc.

Sorry for my ignorance, but how can Shonen Jump be at their third issue of 2014, when it's still 2013? Wouldn't that be confusing to the readers?

No not really, since that's how they've always done it. They start the new year of volumes in December. People don't get confused about cars being the next year over.

I haven't picked up a Marvel comic in years so I don't know if it's still the case, but, when I was a tween/teen (mid-to-late 1980s), Marvel comics would always have the cover date be three months in advance. I'm not entirely sure why they did that, possibly as a sell-by date. Perhaps they do the same kind of thing in Japan with cover dates.

Try as they might, these might only fall onto blind eyes and deaf ears.

Or should I saw, the politicians taking advantage from implementation of that law do understand what Jump is saying, but they're not gonna give a fuck even if it is for public interest, because it's not within THEIR OWN. It's a futile battle that will end with either Jump getting a search warrant or made to compromise some other way, with blackmails of course.

It's not like in the United States where gun owners actively play their part in politics and has an entire organization dedicated to it to make sure that their hobbies and rights are protected. If the younger Japs can't be assed to even go out and vote against the politicians they don't like, you can't expect them to grow balls and fight this legislation even if their fucking lives depend on it. Within their own society, bending their ass over and letting the upper social castes fuck them until they cum blood is a whole lot better.

the child porn in manga/anime thing that contain "loli" is the same argument idiots use about violent video games.. there's no studies that actually link heightened violent behavior from playing games, yet they are quick to jump on the hate bandwagon because it's what the media like to do, put as much of the blame away from themselves by any means necessary. Spoiler alert: there has been less crime as the years go by, since video games became popular. FACT.

Also, it's debated but supposedly there has been less sex crimes in Japan since porn became more available in the 1970's.

Amusing...Is the manga/anime industry so weak and thin that a cutting out the 'loli' would crush it?

    Comment by Anonymous
    17:56 17/12/2013 # ! Neutral (0)

It's not the loli ban, it's the insanely vague wording (and use, it's Japan after all) that may be applied to the stupidest of things. What's illegal in their proposed law? That large eyed, small breasted 25 year old in the manga? Could be. High schooler age? Possibly. Without restrictions and precise wording, they will be slave to the shit law will throw at them.

Give them a step, and they'll take it. Then they push again. They fear what will be banned next.

The point is that japanese laws on the "loli" is so ambigous that just having children in the manga, sexualised or not, might be considered illegal.

If they do that, you would not have any Anime or Manga to watch and read.

Just by having a child in a Anime or Manga would become illegal.
