@Pyrus: the issue I took with your OP that compelled me to write my comment was that you made it seem like the US elevated Germany into the first world. In fact we were far better off economically in comparison to the other world powers pre-WWII than we are even now. Let alone being the very forefront of science (we're still somewhat part of it) and technology (not anymore).

No offense taken at my end. I'm sure Germany was capable of pulling itself together after WW2 on its own. But as it turns out, we Americans like to think we helped out a little & lots of other people in the world like to think so too.
As for the arrogance part, just about everyone throughout history from tribe to city-state to empire to nation-state had gotten full of themselves a bit when they acquired, or felt they'd acquired, the lion's-share of economic, military, or political influence/power.
