The 12th volume of of Shingeki no Kyojin is truly a hit of titanic proportions, outselling all manga this year save One Piece.

With 2.2 million copies of the recently released volume 12 sold, Attack on Titan crushed even the likes of Naruto and Kuroko no Basket, which managed only to pass the paltry one million mark this year.

Only One Piece managed more, with some of the latest tankobon managing to shift as much as 4 million copies.

Shingeki has gone from selling 40,000 copies at its start 3 years ago to over 2 million with its latest volume – some 50 times more.

Its huge grand total of 28 million volumes sold does however have some way to go before it catches up to Japan’s national manga One Piece – now at over 300 million.

Better question is - from all those millions of copies, how little is the author's income compared to greedy publishers ? :p

10%, that's a fixed rate for every author as far as i know.
even so, if we consider the price of one volume to be minimal - that is, 430 yen or so - that's some 917000 USD from vol. 12 sales only if my calculation is right.
Not that i criticise him or something though, he lives by this work of his after all.

Does Oda go by that 10% also...i would assume "he" would be an exception to the rule since he carries the manga industry on his back.

That is, unless the author was dumb enough to take a single high priced check for the anime and not get an actual cut from it. wouldn't be the first time this happened.

Yo, Japan, I'm a let you finish but Shingeki no Kyojin is the best of all time.

But no seriously, this is fucking epic stuff and the numbers just mean people want more. Hopefully we'll see a season 2.

Sure, there is a lot of incoherences - huge and tiny-, like Eren being not curious about a crucial thing for years, or the rails (in the anime) but the suspension of disbelief remains effective, until now.

    Remember Saint Seiya ?

Its because its not PEDOPHILIA and doesnt concentrate on loli moe that ssick idiots wanna see, this one brings back memories of mature animes like Sword for truth, ninja scroll, angel cop, and others, Though

I'll admit, this anime is not as interesting as when it started.

most likely they're starting from where the anime left off; or buying the first volumes from second-hand book stores where sales dont count. Also borrowing from friends and manga rental stores, reading online like a pirate, etc.

I have to agree for the most part, atleast from what i saw of the anime it isn't as amazing as some people seem to claim but thats the same for anything i guess *cough*CoD*cough*

I'm not trying to put the authors work down however its just my opinion that it wasn't a "great" series, thats not to say its bad its just not something i would rate or recommend to friends, but again, thats just a personal opinion, doesn't make it the same for everyone :)

realistically its hard enough (i.e. next to impossible) to ever achieve serious success as a mangaka.

can you really fault Isayama that much when his series suddenly takes off and a publisher exec says "hey, we want to you to make some changes to maximize the profits and longevity of your new hit series"?

the chances of one hit are hard enough, the chances of more than 1 even slimmer. this is likely his one shot to make some money off his work.

for you its just another manga to read or quit at a whim. no skin off your back.
    for Isayama, its his livelihood.

It will soon be revealed that the Beast titan is actually just a member of a team of 5 special titans, each with a special power. During the next 300 chapters we MIGHT see the first one die but only if Eren's father, who is actually the first titan hybrid ever and former leader of the hybrids, trains Eren to use Final Getsu... I mean Titan Call. Also, Mikasa feeling too helpless begs Eren's father to turn her into a hybrid too and she saves Eren in a heroic moment.

Well, I dont want to be that pessimistic. I felt, a big story to tell with Titan. Havnt read it recently for a while. So not sure if it sped up. But I think it be a while before we get fillers and deliberately extending it. Even Bleach, kinda hasnt felt like it been deliberately extending it. Because its pretty much closed all its plot holes.

I am really disappointed with Naruto.

It used to be a manga about tactical, full with tension battle, with deep philosophy/emotional impact and great artwork.

Now, everything washed down, and nothing to look forward. Now I read it only for the ending.

Wait are you talking about Naruto? Because if so, no the mangaka is not even trying anymore, they weren't really ninja like before but now they're just wizards throwing fireballs and huge things at each other in a wasteland.

SnK runs in Bessatsu SHOUNEN Magazine, doofus.

Although the content of BSM is closer to seinen mags like Young Jump, it's still technically a shounen manga.

Firstly, OPINIONS. Secondly, One Piece is consistently good and entertaining, with a giant cast of vivid, lively characters and a huge world full of wildly imaginative places to see.

Attack on Titan's interesting premise and world are something One Piece could arrive at, explore, interact with, and solve in a single arc, or even just a movie instead of a whole series, and it would probably be a much more satisfying read to boot.
