The latest Tales “mothership” title has been unveiled in the form of Tales of Zestiria, apparently due in 2015 as the 20th anniversary “Tales” title – and for the PS3 of course…
Whether the “20th anniversary” title can manage a release before 2015 (the series originator Tales of Phantasia was released in 1995) is not yet clear, but enthusiasm for the announcement seems already to have been tempered by disappointment at having to wait for a presumed “complete edition” for the PS4 in order to get graphics which are any better than those available by its 10th anniversary.
At the current rate of one mothership title every 2-3 years, this may well mean the first PS4 Tales title will be ready by 2018 – in time for the franchise’s 25th anniversary at least, and still better going than certain other popular RPG franchises of late.

Dear Namco Bandai, I would like a Tales game for the PlayStation 4. You know, the system millions of people have just invested in?
Only hairy barbarians make games for hardware that is less than 5 years old.
You really expect Japanese companies to be able to keep up with the insanely high costs for next gen games? Only the biggest companies are able to afford to make next gen games.. I expect Japanese games will stay on PS3 for at least another year or two as standard, or just move to Vita development instead.
I agree with you. anime themed games are the most prevalent in japan (duh) and dont require alot of graphic's to be great. on the other hand, thats the only reason to play games like cod in america
Except that Namco Bandai IS making games for PS4... Like Mobile Suit Gundam and Tekken Revolution/x Street Fighter.
But I actually don't mind them staying on PS3... I'm not planning on getting PS4 anytime soon.
Except that Namco IS one of the biggest japanese companies.
Just do your homework BEFORE you post something THAT stupid.
Just because they are a big company, doesn't mean that they can always spend like Western companies do. Why don't you take your own advice of doing your homework and go look for sales count for most of Tales games to date and tell me if they can claim to have big profits with such figures if they spent any more than 100m USD.
Stiff animations that plague most ingame cutscenes, low and flat details in environments and character models, simplistic lighting and facial expressions. These don't matter if gameplay can make up for it, but they ARE hallmarks of a mid budget title at best.
No matter what you want to believe, Tales as a series is still no where near close to the popularity of FFs and Dragon Quest, and Namco has plenty more games that also need their own budget.
Indies seem to be making next gen games just fine... And cheap!
Yeah, indies make them too, but with significantly less variety and much shorter game time.
For indies, the ratio of graphical fidelity versus content is much, much more inverse than companies' due to budget and lack of manpower.
yet they pulled off some of the greatest games of the last generation, restrictions increase creativity, ill play journey for the millionth time tonight before ever coming close to another drab dull GOW title or showy boring Uncharted
PS4 = 2 million
PS3 = 80 million
Plus people forget PS4 isn't even out in Japan yet, and Japan is known to be late adopters of new consoles as it is. They weren't really ready for a new system, so theres no reason for devs to try to make games for a system not many people will be buying yet.
Only 8 million of that 80 million were in Japan kid. Consoles are dead in Japan. This game was simply developed on console and will be ported to Vita right after it is released.
Dear Namco Bandai, I would like a Tales game that isn't an edited copy and paste story. " ____ helps a girl named _____ in trouble who may or may not have amnesia, or some special gift, or being chased by some group. Over the course of thier journey they discover that they have feelings for each other, the before mentioned girl gets kidnapped, and _____ has to save the world to get her back, or has to make a sacrifial discision to get her back, and everything works out in the end." "What about a title name? Ummm lets see "Tales of _____ia"
Try harder, not all Tales is like that.
And about the feeling between the two character, nothing is wrong with it. Romantic relationship is one thing fan seek in this genre.
Ever heard about fans shipping? It occur in all medium, be it TV Drama, Anime, manga, and games. Because people like to pair the character up.
Ied rather the game be complete and have a damn good story like all the rest of the tales games then to have a pos game on the ps4 with 'amazing graphics' and nothing else like everything else.
LOL since when do Tales games have good stories at all
1995
Agreed. Phantasia is still my favourite when it comes to about the story. And I liked the Abyss more than Symphonia
Symphonia had a good one. Hasn't come up to that level since then though.
I think Xillia 2 gives it a run for its money.
tales of destiny
Tales has a livelier world/story than any FF I've played, and I've played them all but 2 of them.
Granted I've only played Tales of the Abyss and Tales of Vesperia, but the worlds and stories fall far from the quality of the FF games pre-13.
FF sucks metrosexual cock.
@15:32
You played the wrong tales games. Try Phantasia for SNES/PSX

2017 english version at the earliest if at all.
its a 2015 worldwide release so english version will be out in 2015
Worldwide? For real? You're not fucking with me here, an actual, bona fide simultaneous Japanese/English release?
That would be something to see.
[citation needed]
Its spelled Tales of Phantasia
Why does it already look so horrible?
Celebrating 20 years of history by publishing a game on a console that is history? Interesting strategy. The PS4 will be 2-3 years old by the time we see this come out outside of Japan...
The PS3 is history?
Funny you should say that because the PS4 isn't booming with new games. None of the new consoles are. And no, CoD or BF4 don't count as 'new games' and neither do any of the blockbuster copy+paste games.
A console is history when people stop producing for it. And right now the game market is filling with PS3 games.
I've had a wii U since release, and other than monster hunter, i haven't found a game for it i wanted.
Precisely my point. You illustrate it perfectly.
And yet games were still released for the Playstation 2 as recently as... 2013!
...and no one bought them.
>2013
>still releasing ps2 quality games on the ps3
Personally I love glorious 2D graphics and I wouldn't mind old school 2D graphics.
I love 2D graphics so I couldn't care less for your fancy polygons.
lmao who plays Tales for the graphics.
Most reason to play: Plot
I mean it, the story.
The stories for Tales games are crap though. There really isn't anything good about this series.
The combat is great, though. Plus the characters and their interactions with each other are quite amusing. Tales Of plots aren't amazing, but decent enough.
Story huh...
If you watched plenty of animes though, you've seen it all. Hideo Baba has explicitly stated in interviews that his team isn't looking to break new grounds. Perhaps some improvement, yes, but he's generally catering on the Japanese taste first. In his context, those who like animes with all of its recycl... I MEAN recurring themes.
Think of it as a typical soap operas made for lazy housewives. The good guys and girls are so down to Earth, and the bad ones can be seen from a mile away, and everyone knows that the good will prevail. Its audience knows that all soap operas feature only slight modifications on the same formula, but they still watch it.
Personally, I have nothing against this new one though. I just wonder about the real reason behind developing this for PS3. Maybe the kind of graphics PS4 can maximize is still too expensive for mid-budget JRPGs?
Whatever it is, developing on PS3 with last-gen's graphics but with plenty of content is still a smarter move than making a shinier looking linear shit, because shit is still shit. I wouldn't want to see another FFXIII.
Tales games have generally interesting characters, but pretty bad plots and worlds.
I play for the Fujishima art, but since they are slowly pushing him out, i probly won't pick up another Tales
Imbecile. Have you already forgotten how jagged and blurry games on the PS2 already were?
That was last decade's story. Get back to the future, smartass.
Was that supposed to actually make any sense or did you just choke on your own spittle?
Considering the crap games we got on the PS3, that would be a nice change of pace.
WHO CARES ABOUT GRAPHICS LIKE COD, STORY AND GAMEPLAY IS MOST IMPORTANT.
