Shingeki no Kyojin fans may be in for a far less shocking time than they bargained for – creator Hajime Isayama has revealed he has dumped the “traumatic” ending he planned from the start and now has no idea how it will end, saying that upsetting fans of the anime version with a shocking ending where everyone dies would be “criminal.”
The recent interview with Shingeki no Kyojin mangaka Hajime Isayama was most notable for containing an admission that he is now “lost” as to how the story will end after dumping the shocking ending he has planned so as not to upset all the anime fans.
It also proved notable for providing an unusually clear photograph of the mangaka himself, and the revelation that after he started playing the eroge Muvluv and was so impressed with its SF storyline that he concedes it was a major influence on him.
Concerning the ending:
The ending – you’ve said publicly that you had a specific ending for Shingeki envisioned from the start. You’re wavering with regard to that?
The plot is pretty loose, there have been new elements added, and some characters have come to life in a really unexpected way.
So the story came to life on its own, and may now get a different ending to the one you had planned from the start?
Right.
That’s a huge change. I read all your interviews to date and I came to think you had some unbelievably traumatic mega-ending all planned out.
I’m at a loss with respect to that. At first it was going to be a traumatic ending. Like in the movie ‘Mist’ where everyone dies, I wanted to do something like that.
Looking at all the fans who have come to support Shingeki by way of the anime, doing a criminal thing like that to them is just not something I can do, so I can’t really think that was what I really wanted in the first place.
Ohhhh…
I’m really lost, aren’t I?
The suspicion that the the franchise’s sudden and titanic success has caused mangaka or publisher to rapidly switch tack and drag it out into a latter day Bleach which can milked for decades to come has been voiced – as has some curiosity about the plot’s now obvious similarities to Muvluv…

I felt like it should have ended in the chapter where Eren learns to control the Titans. Only before that happened, when Mikasa tells him thank you for helping live her life till then. I thought it was going to end at that point and I was very happy with the idea of a tragic yet touching ending right then and there. Now I'm a little worried for the potential ending...
Hey, spoilerfag. Slow your roll!
Fuck the anime fans and go full Tomino bitch!
Few people have the guts to go Full Tomino.
This.
ah, made me remember the good ol' V gundam days...
one of tomino's most twisted. it's still one of my fav gundam series tho.
Land Runaway Titan - Be Invoked
BOOM! Everyone dies!
or go full Urobutchi.
sigh, see, this is why nothing has a good conclusive ending. authors are scared of fans going mad because their fave chara dies, their fave girl doesn't win the harem, etc. it fucking sucks, because when you want to please everybody, you end up pleasing no one.
true. gotta stay loyal to your work.
Exactly. It is HIS story, so he may as well finish off characters and the plot how he wanted it to be, not like a bunch of tards would like to see.
Ohh course, retarded for wanting to continue the franchise?
Have you stopped to think that by doing this the story dies once!
He chose this option all die at first, for not believing in your own work .. and not wait for a sequel ..
If For you not to make a damn difference do not expect others to be the same thing ..
An ending where everyone dies and every sacrifice was in vain... most Tard, someone who like an end like this ...
Pity that such a good idea end up being thrown away ..
George R. R. Martin would like to have a word with you.
Also Joss Whedon
You're just one of those retards the first poster has mention, judging from your post. Wanting to continue your franchise isn't retarded, making the story to satisfied the fans is.
And do you even read the article? It said that the only reason he decided to not going with that ending is because of the fans. There's no bullshit that he rethink his ending and decide to continue writing because of something else.
And write english, or at least make it comprehensible. If you can't, don't, I bet that most of your opinions/ points are pretty much worthless anyway.
English...
You probably the type who loved the end of mass effect 3 ...
Was enough someone disagree with you and comes with the card: learn to write right ..
What a great idea, being faithful to one end where everyone dies, and sacrificing the only work as a writer .. (or will continue with spin offs that everyone does not support more)
Who knows, maybe he is rich and does not need to work more, and to hell with the retarded fans and happy endings.. who need money or support from you guys ..
They aren't really "authors" in the traditional sense, they're marketers. They aren't out to tell a story, they're out to pander and make money. Hardly a news item, but certainly a sad fact of life these days.
By your definition, no one who makes a living off their work can be called an "author".
only when they sell out
You say a lot of stupid shit, Conduit. Pandering and making a living off of work are not equivalent in meaning.
Conduit, that's as stupid as saying "no musician who wants to make a living off of music is a musician".
you meant "publisher", right ?
Please.
Almost every successful author is a marketer. In fact, almost every successful creator in general is a marketer. That's how the game is played.
If you didn't get successful by being a marketer, you got lucky. That's all there is to it.
I understand the desire to be true to your own story (and there's merit to that even as a "marketer," so Isayama really doesn't have to change the ending for the reason he thinks he does), but only those who've proven themselves have the ability to do that.
Well, them and self-publishers; but again, you've got to be stupidly lucky to pull that off.
No, authoring is about telling your own story, marketing is about pleasing people. If you can't balance the two then luck has nothing to do with it. There are plenty of authors who can write the story they want to without giving up on it just to please their fans.
I agree that artists should stay true to their vision. However, I hate it when a story has downer ending, though I probably hate "open" endings even more. So if I had to choose between a downer ending and one that just... stops, I'll take the downer ending.
Generic shonen, "Yeager becomes jesus titan, saves the day" ending is almost inevitable.
It would more likely be "Eren failed, Mikasa saves his ass AND the world. Then Christa and Ymir gets a hot lesbian sex scene out of nowhere and we get a summer beach/pool episode for the Blu-ray OVA".
only it would lessen the series value since that now aligns itself with the generic semi-porn that is autumn 2013.
i'm pretty sure this giant forest hides a steamy onsen.
I rather have that kind of conclusion than Eren die and Titan still roaming around, a.k.a no conclusion of the story.
I can except if Eren die in epic final battle, double KO against B*^&T Titan.
Jäger program was born...........
no pun intended
The Jesus Complex for the Main Character would ultimately be a good ending in a sense lol...In order to save everyone...I like it :D
Fuck that pussy ass shit.
There's also some responsibility taken by the author for the fallout too though. I remember hearing about fan suicides after "The End of Evangelion."
yeah and what good did that do? they didn't get to live to see he remake of evangelion now, wow how sarcastic, but then again that was probably fan motivation along with money.
I'm ok with stupid people killing themselves over an imaginary - rei or allah- friend, as long as they don't make others participate.
suicidal people are going to kill themselves. the end of a show is just an excuse to do so.
yeah, they're afraid of cutting their source of money
See, I can't agree with you there. Some authors do do that but it's not true that most do. Because if that were true Sakura Haruno from Naruto would be dead by now, Shinji from Evangelion would not have sucked SO DAMN HARD, and School Days...yeah, School Days would NOT have been a thing. As somebody whose LITERALLY seen over 1000 anime and read just as many, unrelated, manga (that's right, I have no life) I can so that most author's don't just change their endings at the last minute like that. They either went for the main heroine (just a genre example) from the beginning or they go with a totally random heroine out of nowhere. A couple specific genre examples would be Shuffle!, Akane-iro Somaka something or other (forgot the rest, been years!) and Mashiro-iro Symphony where none of the main heroines won, so to speak.
Its cool, you just cant kill all characters, what will be the point of following a story of people that fail, you can kill most of them but not all.
Imagine if first season of game of thrones everyone died, what will be the point of following that story.
Even in the Mist movie, not everyone died.
Because this isn't high enough quality to be worth reading for anything but the ending, right? If a story is so bad it needs to change its ending out of fear of losing fans, then it's not worth defending.
He's killed off countless characters already. I don't see why he can't continue...
i soo agree bro. the mobile suit gundam series kills most of there chars all the time.....best series ever? yes
They even not give a chance for the MC "live happily ever after" with his girl. (In most title)
Shingeki is a diablus-ex-machine massacre fest. The story was never that good to begin with, the main highlight is the shock value of killing off characters in the most contrived and random ways possible. A good story runs on more than gimmicks. Removing the gimmicks does not make such story any less interesting.
well no it not that simple, when you create an idea and let it out into the world. That idea does become connected to the fans and those that love it, so you do have to at least think about them. Especially considering they are the ones that bought you success.
you would think he would just do what he planned and what many other AUTHORS DO is start a NEW series that is better or just as good cause he can do anything instead of staying with a plot line.
This is exactly why I LOVE Evangelion. So much butthurt on this, yet the author just stayed true to his vision. Anno's new cinematic version might be better in the technical department, but I wonder what ending the fourth movie will get.
I say he stick with his plan and pull a Stone Ocean.
FUCK HAHAHAHAHA Then a spin off -No Balls Run
he should stick to the original plan. mikasa raped and eaten by pigs. fuck it, let's roll.
I actually wanna see that, just ending with resetting the damn universe and pull an Araki except it's not as good as Araki's
