Sony: PS4 Launch “Greatest Ever” “2.1 Million Sold”

two-million-ps4s-sold

With 2.1 million PS4s sold Sony is boldly proclaiming it “the greatest start in history” for a PlayStation launch.

Sony says the PS4’s “actual sales” have topped 2.1 million as of the 1st of December, with much of the world (not least Japan) still to even get it.

They can but hope the scepticism this has aroused amongst surly Japanese gamers is down to them being jaded over their delayed launch:

“To think they got a chance to outdo the PS2 launch, amazing.”

“With the PS3 the same numbers they trotted out were all about sneaky retail terms like ‘shipped to distributors’ – for them to give actual sales figures must mean things are going well I guess.”

“Was I missing the part where they released any decent games to go with it?”

“I guess it will eventually manage 20 million in total at least.”

“Finally the Xbox dies!”

“Who cares, they have forsaken the Japanese market so it hardly matters.”

“And Japan gets it last of all. I won’t buy it!”

“What do you expect from a company headed by a foreigner!”

“It isn’t really surprising they had this record. They got more pre-orders than the Xbox, destroyed it at all the shows before it was even released, the launch was theirs to screw up.”

“With this example to follow I expect most Japanese companies will start leaving Japan until last, great.”

“The Xbox One apparently outsold it on Black Friday – I think they still have a chance in North America.”

“That was just Walmart and Target data. It is useful data but not the whole story.”

“They could be at 3 million with a simultaneous Japanese launch.”

“As if… there aren’t any games Japanese would buy for it yet.”

“Delaying the Japanese launch until last was definitely a successful strategy. There is no point in a Japanese launch until all the Japanese titles are ready, as nobody here buys anything else.”

“Japan is already sewn up. If they win the rest of the planet this generation is back to being a 1-console generation again.”

“With Japanese infatuated with card games on smartphones the PS4 and Xbox Ones are pearls cast before swine here.”

probably a new venture. mobile gaming seems to have more audience than console or pc gaming(not sure about the pc gaming part since it's a semi mobile gaming device these days) you can play a psp emu on an android provided that it's powerful enough and that attracts people itself so without too much shoving the words "buy our DLC or die with a crummy game you've bought" appeals more to people who doesn't have the time to immerse themselves and spend more in games than in life.

Mobile gaming will be the way of the future. If we can carry 8 gb of data in our pockets compared to the room sized versions of decades ago, how much more for devices? We will be able to carry a mobile pocket sized version of a console able to play graphics that high end pcs are capable of right now. The limits are endless. It is futile to resist change. It's going to take a decade more or two.

Right now, mobile games are mere timekillers, except those made for portable consoles. They look more impressive than top games 15 years ago, but I'd better play Zelda on NES emulator than any of modern mobile games. They suck your money (else you usually suck in game), and they're genuinely boring.

That's funny, VGCHARTZ says PS4 and One have sold 1.2 million units. Guess they've gone back to lying, like they did when they claimed to have outsold 360 4, 5 times before actually doing so.

    >he thinks they're tallied separately, not as a region called "North America"
    >he calls others "dumbfuck"

Oh so much irony. What a pleb.

Using tea leaves to divine sales numbers would give more reliable results than vgchartz. The site is bad and you should feel bad for using it.

These comments make me laugh so much. Sony released in North America first because it is currently the largest gaming market. I guess these commenters think competent international business practices should take a backseat to blind patriotism.

Actually they released first in North America because in that market xbox kicked the shit out of PS3 and they couldn't afford to just hand the entire market to xbox twice in a row. The fact that North America is the largest gaming market was just an after thought.

Nintendo sold more Wiis, but sold only a fraction of the games that 360 and PS3 sold, and royalties on game sales is where console makers make their real money.

Nintendo always made a profit on their consoles vs selling them as a lead loss item.
This is probably why they went with the Pica200 GPU for the 3DS vs the much more powerful Tegra and SGX series GPUs.

Nintendo is hardly competing for the same buyers as microsoft and sony. Nintendo just flips them off and stake out their own course.
And while microsoft and sony compete for the same gamers and the same type of games, causing them to divide the sales between each other, nintendo consoles slip their way in as a side console to those hardcore gamers who keep yelling into their mics (which have been muted by everyone else) after getting killed of in *insert random FPS here* that they play when their blood pressure gets so high they start getting dizzy in order to stress down. In addition to being a good console for those of us who don't treat games as a matter of life or death, as well as for families with children of any age.

M$ probably counted the amount of 'replaced' broken consoles to their sale amount to 'kick the shit' out of ps3 sales though.

And don't forget, MS released one year earlier than PS3, and yet the sales of both is equal right now.

I love the fact that no one has thought of this as a whole beta test scenario where the rest of the world gets to test out all the bugs and Japan gets the finished model that works perfectly.

Not a chance in hell, my delusional little yellow friend. In Japan consoles are a dead market and Sony knows it, which is why even Koreans get PS4 first.

The companies that benefitted the most of the new releases are.

AMD first (all parts are amd), Activision (COD) EA AND UBISOFT then Sony.

I wonder how much money those companies made with their respective games + how much they charged sony and microsoft to put on their systems. If they released GTA V on the PS4 and Xbox one on launch it would be the end of the world, Japan wouldn't even get one PS4 or XBOX ONE till late 2015

The only reason xbox won ps4 in sale on black friday was because we had alot more xbox than ps4. I work for walmart, we got 29 xbox and only 6 ps4. All the walmart near me had a similar number. Every ps4 sold in minute and all before anyone ask for xbox. Took 4 hour till we sold all xbox.

Taking 4 hours to sell 29 of a launched console at a Walmart on Black Friday is terrible.

They should all moved in the first 2 hours which shows the Xbox One is actually a marketing failure.

Someone on Sacom hasn't learned to read the TOS yet.

Sony is also on the Microsoft, Apple and Google bandwagon as well they are also supplying metadata to NSA.

If you say spybox and they could grab your video data then how come it took till 2013 to arrest a major Child Porn ring operation which was going over for years if they were technically supply NSA with all this information?

Sony isn't recording our faces and what we do in our living room, names on a list is one thing, everyone sells a list of names, that's common practice, but the kinect uses facial recognition, which is why the xbox one is so tasty to the government, they even admitted it by revoking thier statement that the kinect will have to be on 24/7

You people have it all wrong, there is no Apple, Microsoft, Sony, Google, Yahoo, bandwagon. The fucking NSA forced them to do it. They gave letters to CEO's of those company's stating that if they don't comply with backdoors that the NSA will declare them traitors to the country. In Microsoft's case the NSA inserted agents into the company and created the backdoor themselves.

Stop blaming the companies and go after the real tyranny, THE NSA!!!!!!!!it's not the companies fault, they were forced to do it. Small busniess who didn't want to comply had to sell their business because they didn't want to comply but bigger companies can't afford to do that.

Tell your congressman to get rid of the NSA, and TSA. They are true domestic enemies.
