GitS Arise Ghost Tears: “Despair in More Ways Than One”

The 3rd instalment of the not uncontroversial Ghost in the Shell ARISE has been dated for the middle of 2014, even as fan dissatisfaction with the two instalments so far continues to fester.
Border:3 Ghost Tears will be theatrically released June 28th, with the usual BDs to follow.
A total of 4 instalments are planned, suggesting it will wrap up by the end of 2014.
Between the pre-release controversy, and both the November 30th release of border:2 Ghost Whispers and the recent TV premières of the first instalment which coincided with it, the fan reaction seems to have gone from bad to worse:
“Don’t bother following this.”
“How can it take them 6 months to finish a 1 hour production?”
“Right, I just saw border:1 on TV and the production values are no better than a weekly TV anime. Quite a mystery how they spend 6 months on something like that.”
“The production values of Arise are frankly worse than many late night anime.”
“They are still desperate to squeeze some more life out of this?”
“Like Berserk, One Piece, Five Star Stories and the rest…”
“They still intend to continue with this awful new series?”
“At least they seem to have stopped the pachinko.”
“GitS was totally fresh when it came out but it is really wearing thin now. The stories were never that good, it was the novel setting which made it.”
“Arise was such a disappointment.”
“I wouldn’t say it was bad but it certainly had its flaws. The production was OVA level I guess.”
“The production values were awful! They could have kept Motoko and continued the existing series at least. Was there any point to changing all the seiyuu?”
“Probably to cut costs…”
“They should never have given Ghost in the Shell to these new clowns.”
“It is not generating any buzz even. I guess this is the end for Ghost in the Shell.”
“It isn’t bad but has to compare to the TV series, so it had no chance.”
“The second one is a bit better than the first. Awful music though.”
“1 was OK with it being fresh and new, but the 2nd one was just bad. It’s like they have to use some template with Motoko, terrorists and the ‘koma being manipulated by some irregular AI behind the scenes. It’s old. Making the same stuff with new character designs and seiyuu was a bizarre decision. I finished with 2, I’ll not be buying any more.”
“Except the irregular AI has become a series regular.”

Hi, my name is Gundam Unicorn and I'm awful.
Unicorn has fantastic animation, regardless of your opinion on the story and characters. It's an OVA and the animation quality is heads and shoulders above any tv series, by far.

The art could be as gorgeous as you'd like but it doesn't count for diddly when the story is garbage.
The point is that the production time is huge because the animation is fantastic. They're not writing the story now, it's already been written, they're just adapting it and modifying it in some places. Complaining that the story is garbage despite the long production time is nonsensical. The scripts for the OVA are finished long before the animation is done.
Gundam a shit
Well the story of Gundam Unicorn is way forced in my opinion. Typical gundam scenario i guess but the main switching sides like that is too unrealistic. But the animation and production values are off the charts man.

To be fair Shirow always made Motoko look like a futuristic sex toy. Even in the glorious SAC series she appears in a ridiculous outfit that screams fan service. badly.

All this qqing about GitS makes me think I don't get that movie at all. Isn't it 'just' an action anime in a cyberpunk settings? It had a movie like story telling, so it didn't provide anything new, some animes had already high quality that time and all the philosophy in the anime is... well. If you really into philosophy - and I am not - maybe you shouldn't look for it in an anime. The question 'am I real' or 'what it is to be human' was asked many times before humans came up with the idea of cyberisation. And the characters constant quoting seems stupid knowing they are connected to the net 24/7, it's like someone would read out loud topical wiki articles during a discussion.
So in my view it was great! And I want all those people who hated it to see my joyful face while watching it. Then I would lick their tears off their face. :3
Well I can't speak generally for everyone, but for me, I love GitS for how it gets you thinking so much despite its simplicity, for it's atmosphere and music, and the best animation and direction I've ever seen in an animated feature. Just to talk about one aspect of it - Motoko is often shown nude in the film but it's confusing because she's supposed to be a cold, inhuman cyborg. She's a character that blurs the line between human and machine, and while she totally appears to be this hot bodied female human woman, suddenly at the end you see her body torn apart and it's just wires and metal under that "skin".

All it took back when they teased #1 was noticing the change in Director and Composer for me to know it was gonna be trash compared to the old stuff, that's why I haven't bothered watching it.
Heck, I didn't even know it was released already, let alone that the second one is out!
Yeah, even if they chose a new composer, the music absolutely paled next to anything Kenji Kawai and Yoko Kanno brought to the series. Those two were really different in style yet they kept the same feel and atmosphere of the series, can't say the same for the new stuff.

Don't give me some artist bullcrap about music reflecting an undeveloped Motoko, it should be reflecting the amazing environment instead, or the story, or something mystical... basically just watch Blade Runner.

I wasn't even gonna watch it but I read some reviews from people rating it with 9's and 10's so I gave it a chance only to be utterly disappointed. Not much by the production values but by the crap story and execution. Everything was a cliche from the crappy white dolls to everything else... It was shit. Didn't even bother watching part 2 cus I'm done with it. I rather spend my time watching some low quality ecchi anime.
