I like how they use to let mangaka have their own style. Now it just seems like everything in each genre looks the same with very few exceptions.

Have not seen that at all in manga. Definitely somewhat apparent in anime studios like JC Staff and Kyoani... no doubt from the same designers working on new things.
There's always some stylistic convention to a genre, but it's not as if you can't tell the artist right away by glancing at a random panel most of the time.

I think you could up that to an infinite amount of times more, cause it's pretty safe to say Chernobyl didn't even make it to the ocean directly.
