The US launch of Sony’s PlayStation 4 has gone off without major incident and with much in the way fanfare – and, most importantly, sales, with a “million” pre-orders and only “0.4%” broken out of the box…
The first thing done with the device was of course to take it apart – and after that, complain about how few games there are so far:
Japanese are still unaccountably irritated at their own launch apparently being pushed back well into 2014 (notably behind even China and Korea) so the kind Americans can “beta test” it for them in time for the holidays:
“Poor Japan.”
“Japan: … ”
“A quarter of a fucking year!”
“Foreign companies are so cold to Japan.”
“Delaying this so far back in Japan just so they make the US date is just madness.”
“It is not like there would be any merit to releasing early in Japan.”
“Just import it, right?”
“Aren’t you supposed to wait for the slim version?”
“I have to wonder if they are suddenly going to have a superb release line-up come February.”
“Wait 6 months for the price to drop $100 and there to be some half decent games.”
“Probably all their localisations are running late.”
“I’ll buy it when there is an Ar Tonelico for it.”
“I might buy one when our beta testers get the bugs ironed out…”

“I’ll buy it when there is an Ar Tonelico for it.”
YES! exactly my feeling. Or Suikoden, Breath of Fire, etc.....
The ar tonelico series has ended, if you played ar tonelico 3 you'll know why.
Gust is currently working on Arnosurge, which has lots of similiarities with Ar tonelico including song magic and the ability to dive into you female partners' mind world. Well, the director is Akira Tsuchiya, who also did all off Ar tonelico.
The battle system seems to be taken straight from AT2. It almost looks like AT3 done right. If they kee with their 3 titles tandem, we just might see one part on the PS4.
Official page here: http://social.gust.co.jp/pc/arnosurge/
AT2 was the closest the series ever got to having legitimately good combat system, so that's a good sign. Really, the issue was that they tried to do too much and couldn't figure out how to make it manageable yet challenging, so it just ended up too easy. Still, Replekia is the most player-empowering mechanic I've ever seen in a JRPG. Holy shit.
On that note, Shikata Akiko. The Hymmnos songs in AT put other JRPG series like Tales that try to claim a, "music", theme to shame.
If they were to remake AT2 with a rebalanced (read: more challenging) battle system, higher res sprites, and better audio quality (and maybe an English translation that isn't complete garbage), I'd buy at least five copies. Bonus points for Hymmnos language lessons. Was wol ra erlla knawa Hymmnos.
So true.
I brought the ps3 just for Quga.
Oh how I would love to play another Breath of Fire game. But there was an official announcement a few years ago saying that the IP had been suspended for the foreseeable future.. ;(
Japan will get the good shit in 2014 this is why i waited to get my Ps4 ;p
The slim version will be a tablet.
I expect some hobbyist to make a PS4 laptop or tablet soon.
I'd had all three Playstations. I even got my PS2 on launch day. But the PS4 is underwhelming. I've played the demo units, and the graphics are only incrementally better than the PS3, nothing like the leaps between the original Playstation to the PS2, or the PS2 to the PS3. And the PS4 even lacks some features on the PS3 (things like DLNA support). Eventually I'll have to get a PS4 to play the latest games, but I feel the PS4 just isn't a big enough step from the PS3 to warrant a new console generation.
indeed. Aside from the WiiU (Nintendo previously lacking anything in terms of an HD console), it really seems like these next gen systems are being made simply for the sake of having them. The removal of backwards compatibility, even for download titles, also seems like a serious dick move, and I've gotta wonder how this older game "streaming" is supposed to work (because from their choice of words, it almost sounds like you're expected to be always online just to play 15-year-old games that are clearly one-player, which sounds like the perfect recipe for another Sim City disaster).
Ever played a streaming demo of a game on your PC? Basically what you're doing is controlling some other system remotely and it's returning a video of the game to you. Generally, this is pretty much as horrible as it sounds, what with the awful input delay and terrible video compression. Maybe it could work half decently within a small country like Japan with solid internet infrastructure and close servers to play old JRPGs and other stuff that doesn't demand especially responsive inputs, but even then the video quality would probably suck. In the US or in other large countries with shitty internet, it's basically a lost cause.
Unless they mean something completely different by, "streaming". Highly doubt it though.
Not really a dick move, it is just what is required to move on. The 360 had a powerpc based processor, the PS3 has the cell. The powerpc is kind of at a dead end and the cell was a nightmare to develop and develop for. So both went to a x86 based processor which will be better in the end. Expecting PS3 or 360 game to work on one of the new machines would be like expecting old mac apps to work on a new pc.
First gen PS3 did backwards compatibility by including the Emotion chip in the PS3. This cost a lot of money and contributed to the $600 launch price and was replaced by software emulation in the next gen. Like most software emulation it had issues.
Ill just keep my old systems, problem solved.
POWER architecture is far from dead, just it's not fit for tiny consoles at all.
did you play Killzone? Even though the game's pretty bad the graphics are simply gorgeous. No current gen comes even close to it.
FPS A SHIT
SSD for PS4 = faster loading speed, less heat and no moving parts.
but incredibly expensive and tight on space. Not worth it.
Well, if it works half as effectively for a PS4 as it does for a PC, I'd say it's worth the price. Hell, even dropping PSP ISOs onto the memory card instead of reading from install data/disc did a lot for decreasing load times.
First you compare Hard-Drives with Flash-Drives,
then you compare Flash-Drives with Optical-Media?
Your argument makes zero sense now...
What part of, "faster reading, faster loading", doesn't make sense? Obviously they're very different storage mediums, but the idea with the PSP example is that moving data from slower-reading storage (the crappy UMDs) to a faster one (the memory card) resulted in faster loading times. If the standard HDD in the PS4 is a bottleneck for load times on the console (which often is the case on PC), a SSD might help significantly.
That's only if the bottleneck is the HDD. What about bus size?
SSD costs less than the rest of the part together!
The entire system may have only cost them $200 at the most to build.
I have spent over $500 extra on the amount of repairs I've had to do to my launch PS3. Forget "599 US DOLLARS", mine has cost me $1000+ now. I'd pay that much from the start if it meant that I could have a sturdy, long lasting console that never gives me problems or requires maintenance.
I don't know whats the hurry, PS4 has no gaems.
I'd wait 6 months as then there will be games ,it'll probably be cracked, and WalMart will be selling them for under $400.
^ this!
PS4 has better than games, anon. It has the wobble. Best new feature for a console, right along with HDMI failure.
^ and this!
Nah, 360 disc eating was a way cooler feature; that perfect circle was just to die for. RRoD was alright, but the, "oh fuck", moment when you hear the machine munching away at your game was just priceless.
PS3s overheating and PS4s wobbling just don't have the same punch, you know?
You do know that you don't have to keep the console in standing position right?
You mean Xbox One.
Japan? That god damn country has no market for these types of console anymore. Only 3DS is selling there.
Yeah, portable basically owns the industry over there. Actually, even over here, console's basically going to be holding onto exclusives as its lifeline. Now that console architecture is just like PC, there's no reason not to make PC versions of everything, except to get those $EXCLUSIVE$ Sony and Microsoft bucks.
Which is a wonderful feeling, since us PC gamers get to go full circle, own the industry again, and mod the shit out of games to add better graphics, more sidequests of our choosing, and use engines to make extra shit.
More like now that STEAM can help combat pc software piracy, there's no reason not to release pc versions of everything. With the exception of big money funded s0nI/M$ games.
So far, I've been able to pirate just about any STEAM game I wanted. This includes notable ones like Skyrim which usually I would've bought in a heartbeat because I love the respecting franchises but was forced to pirate in order to spit in the face of DRM despots.
Its more like Steam competes with piracy by offering a better service and convenience.
The best way to fight piracy is fair pricing.
Piracy is just for poor folks like some of us. If you are rich or your parents are rich why bother with piracy. Always worrying about getting tracked and the only computer riddled with virus is not that amusing.
@03:06
Well, if you're rich you can save money by NOT buying stuff. Why not get stuff for free and buy other shit with your money (whores... I mean girlfriends^^)
BTW I'm one of the good ol' poor folk lol
Oh, and not everyone gets viruses through pirating (I heard). Getting tracked is a different subject matter though (the only people I HEARD have had legal issues were some idiots getting mainstream music)... -_-
I got tracked for a queens blade episode. Other than that nothing. Kind of awkward because it was queens blade..
"I'm poor", "I'm forced to pirate because of DRM", "They don't have the game in my country", wah wah wah.
Piracy is theft. No excuses. If you can't afford something, then either save up your money, wait until it's on sale, or do without. It's not available to you in your country? Well boo hoo, get it off ebay, or amazon, or one of the thousand other legitimate ways to buy something from a global marketplace.
No valid argument for pirating a game has ever been made, because there really isn't a valid argument.
Think about trying to rationalize any other kind of theft to a judge: "Well your honor, I'm poor but I really wanted a Ferrari so I broke into the dealership and took one. After all, they charge way too much for those, I just can't afford it."
See how stupid that sounds? People pirate because they never have to face the victim of the theft, run any risk or feel any repercussions from the theft. It's because people just don't have a conscience any more.
Are games expensive? Yes. Should they be cheaper? Yes. Is stealing it ever going to make it cheaper? Nope.
Does DRM suck? Yes. Does it help prevent piracy? Not really. Does having no DRM encourage people to pay instead of pirate? Not at all.
Well, maybe you are right about that. There are no excuses in doing crimes of any kind. But in case of anime and manga, many of them became well known outside of Japan due to piracy. Manga and anime websites that offer free downloads promote the products that otherwise unknown. If the products are good enough surely some piracy won't kill it.
Plus there are billions of prospect customers out there and only a small percentage are involve in piracy. Hell, most of the people i know didn't even know what torrent is.
01:44 cry moar. I've been buying every single entry in the Elder Scrolls series until now, it's only Skyrim which I pirated. I'm by no means poor and can afford any game I wish to buy. It's just that DRM shit which I will have none of; I chose the route of piracy for Skyrim simply out of spite. A big Fuck You at those who would employ DRM. This is not an excuse, it's just the truth.
The current gen xbox runs on pc architecture and several major games from this generation have yet to get the PC treatment. Two note-able games are Red Dead Redemption *which looks like it will never be ported* and GTA V *which is yet to be ported*

Nope, the 2DS takes over now...
>implying 2DS won't be a failure
Fukushima = The PLANET EARTH is done for!!
And Social gaming don't forget that crap.
At least Japan, will receive a PS4 with fair price ...
Now see how Brazil is benefiting!
The world's most expensive PS4 is sold here!
Thanks Sony Brazil for showing the world how this country is corrupt and thief, starting with you!
