china-fake-windows (1)

The latest miracle of China quality construction to have amazed those in China and beyond is the advent of “fake” windows – in fact just black squares painted on the side of a building…

The local government responsible for the fake windows claims they were painted on to the municipal apartments for “aesthetic reasons” because it was too much trouble to put real windows in the building’s stairwells, but were sufficiently embarrassed by being called out on Sina Weibo that they have decreed that contractors should remove them.

Not in this case, but a good response to fake windows is that the concrete of the building is already weak, and windows further weaken the structure ..
Why not replace them with solar panels for lighting and would be a good economy in the condominium ...
There at least the value of the panels should be pretty cheap ..

How would a baseball be able to hit the window?
The baseball itself would explode first...thus not resulting in a crashing window which was none but a painting.
That would mean, however, that the brush used for painting had to explode since everything Made in China tends to cause explosions.
But does that not include people? How come they can build complex structures without these bursting forth, resulting in a chain reaction due to people exploding, causing the next object to explode which causes the next object to explode which causes the next object to explode which causes the next object to explode which causes the next object to explode which causes the next object to explode which causes the next object to explode... ∞?
Wouldn't that mean China is just an illusion?
As a country where each and everything explodes can't possibly exist.

Actually the third most powerful country.
The US is still the most powerful country and is still equal to the next two most powerful countries combined.

But still they're number three yet act like they're number 52.

country by GDP by PPP would disagree

Anyway it has between 50-75% of America's GDP and 4.25 times more people, and there are trailer parks in America, at least this is an exception in China, don't expect too much from humanity.

A new trailer in the US is nicer then 95% of the houses and apartments in China.
It's also ironically nicer then many homes in Japan.
See in the US even a crappy mobile home has a proper HVAC system and a centralized hot water heater.

Need to make it warmer or cooler inside just change the thermostat and thats it.

I dunno, I lived in one of those simple cheap apartments in Japan for some months and it was nice. I don't think you would have an ofuro bath in a trailer.

It's the stairwells, not supposed to line up.

In any case, something Sancom quality news omitted:
The original design had windows, but had to be removed in accordance to new building codes. Someone apparently thought the building looked bad without them.

Windows are structural weaknesses. Stairwells need to be the strongest part of a building for emergencies. American apartments built after the 1950s never have stairwell windows for this reason. China updated their building codes to this effect only this year.

    Comment by Anonymous

Then that is some stupid damned building code. If the building is built PROPERLY, putting windows in a stairwell would do absolutely nothing to make the building stronger nor weaker.

    Comment by Anonymous
    23:31 10/11/2013 # ! Neutral (0)

It's not stupid. It's not a structural reason but a fire protection one. Stair cases need to be contained so smoke doesn't get inside while people try to run down them during a fire. Having windows would defeat that.

Most staircases I been in never have windows. And I live in the US. I would think windows would make for horrible safety.

also wrong... to a point. New technology have rendered windows more stable and structurally sound than most staircases themselves.
