Jackie Chan: “Tsunami & Quakes Good in a Certain Country”

Jackie Chan’s recent remarks that it was “good” for tsunami and earthquakes to devastate “a certain country” have sparked plenty of criticism.
According to the Hong Kong press, Chan’s recent trip to California to promote the US release of his “CZ12” movie saw him make more of his legendarily ill-judged remarks to media in local interviews.
Just which country he was referring to is not clear, but the context certainly seems to exclude quake-prone California and China:
“Americans and Chinese shouldn’t just join hands – the whole world should join hands.”
He clarified that this did not include a certain unidentified country:
“Even saying this, I think it is best natural disasters befall a certain country. Like giant earthquakes and tsunami.”
“In times like this the world will join together to aid them, which is great. Without earthquakes and tsunami nobody will do anything. Without them people just engage in conflicts under political pretexts.”
Chan is of course no stranger to making nakedly political remarks in support of China.
The “tasteless and insensitive” comments do not seem to have been well received in Hong Kong, but this pales to the response from Japanese:
“Everyone knows exactly what he is trying to say here.”
“Obviously he means Japan. He’s gone down in my estimation.”
“Please just keep him out of Japan.”
“Not this clown again!”
“He reminds me of Agnes.”
“Amazing he would say these things considering the situation in places like Sichuan.”
“This filthy Chinese dog’s vicious remarks are obviously directed against Japan.”
“Is he alright?”
“I want to believe he is being made to say these things.”
“He could be well meaning, if he is really that stupid.”
“He’s just inarticulate, really.”
“He means something like it would be good for aliens to invade because it would unite the planet.”
“This old fool still hasn’t learned to keep his mouth shut I see.”
“The CCP’s dog here is still barking I see.”
“I wouldn’t call this remark ‘accidental’ – it is pretty obvious where he is coming from and what he means.”
“He’s just an old fool now. Even the Chinese are criticising him.”
“He’s an idiot. It’s a shame he’s like this considering the positive impression his movies leave you with.”

Well not the first time celebrities making stupid comments....
He's obviously trying to say that humans need common enemies like earthquakes and tsunamis, or they will never join forces or aid each other. Sad, but true.
Jackie Chan is just not very articulate.
It's probably just a poorly worded statement.
That being said I have no idea on his standing on Japan/China relations so I could be completely wrong. >_<
This sounds like a really awful translation.
He could have been saying something along the lines "Good things happen when natural disasters strike, for example earthquakes and tsunamis. Without natural disasters, the many aid countries are usually engaged in political conflicts with each other."
Sure it's insensitive to victims of these disasters, but it shouldn't be so on-the-nose like "I enjoy inanimate objects coming to life and exploding in China"
Which reminds me, I do enjoy Chinese explosion stories. We need more of those here.
This is exactly what he is saying. What he is saying is based on the wisdom that no matter what bad befalls anyone anywhere, on a long enough time line, good is drawn from it. There is plenty of good that was birthed from 9/11 occurring, there was plenty of good birthed from the Tsunami happening, the levis breaking in New Orleans, even the Holocaust happening has birthed changes in consciousness.
The truth is that they may have happened otherwise, but this was the pathway that those changes decided to birth into the world. There can be no more holocaust on the planet without the entire planet being outraged by it, the levis breaking forced us to recognize climate change in a way that is changing the planet, as did the tsunami change our perceptions on energy and how safe it is, among many other things.
Jackie Chan's statement is twisted by the shitheads who are preventing the necessary perception shifting that has to happen on the planet for our species to grow. He is correct. It is a good thing for tsunamis and earthquakes, if they are meant to happen anyway under divine perception as many believe, for them to happen to certain countries at certain times. That is what he was saying. Sometimes they are calls by the planet for us to recognize an energy shift and face it head on, whether we want to or not.
Anyone who interprets this as hateful is just wasting their time. Even if he did happen to dislike Japan in the rare chance he does, the statement remains true nevertheless.
Your one of the few people I respect on this forum. So wise and insightful beyond your years
lol wut
I guess if all you do is hang around these 'forums' or with people of comparable dirt level maturity this qualifies as 'respectable' and 'beyond your years'
LOL
what he said can be interpreted as he does not trust humanity to do any good things on their own without tragedy going on
but there is something that you have to consider, you guys may not know well the hongkong culture, but saying wishing/wanting/saying that he would like natural disaster to happen in somewhere can be interpreted as curse in HK(superstitious elment)
for example, if you say I think it is best that u fall down the stairs, it means "go fall down the stairs" (in the curse way)
It can be a curse, it is true. He may in fact hold some animosity toward Japan. The point is that his statement is no less true. His actual statement's intention is not really something I care about. If he said it as an attack against Japan or something, then I'm saddened that he is bigoted. If it wasn't, then unfortunately his choice of words is raped by stupid people and assholes. It's kind of the same concept as even your greatest enemy having something to say that is worthwhile. It doesn't matter the source if there is truth to it really.
@ Anon 20:59
Agreed, this is not the place to find wisdom. Although considering this is the Twitter and Facebook generation, grains of any sort of wisdom have become few and far between, so I've found it pretty much doesn't matter where you are anymore.
You can extrapolate positive change from pretty much anything that has ever affected this planet. Dressing the obvious in usual euphemisms is not wisdom.
I wouldn't say that the yellow press is all that influential.
That's quite the leap of logic there. How exactly did we go from "positive things happen even in light of disaster" to "disaster is good"?
What he's saying about the wisdom part is that disaster gives an outlet for "good change", not that "given enough time good comes from everything". Learn to read.
@ Anon 11:55
I was saying it in my own words. You basically said the same thing I did, just in different words. All disaster brings good change, hence, on a long enough time line, everything negative can find a positive in its future.
Good change always comes in the face of disaster, because people who hid behind ignorance are forced out of their shells to face something, one way or another.
Sankaku at its best taking words out of context. Twice the fools who believe in everything they read.
Yeah it's obvious he didnt mean it like that.
B-b-but I read it on the internet! So it MUST be true! No one would ever tell lies or talk shit there, right?
Nope, its on the internet, so its 100% true, that's how it works.
Also you have to get angry and complain all over the internet on how its wrong but don't get off your ass to do anything about it.
That's how the Internet's work.
Meanwhile Americans demonize North Korea as if it wasn't filled with people.
I'm not American and never have been there but the impression I have is that they hate north Korea gov, not the people. I don't like China's gov either but the Chineses I have meet were nice people (even if they get irrational when talking about Senkaku just like Argentineans talking about Falklands)
There's an inherent issue with that kind of sentiment, which largely goes along the lines of "I don't trust your government" --> "I don't trust your people's ability to govern themselves." There are plenty of countries in the world that have a bone to pick with that American idea, but most ignore it because people by and large want a peaceful world.
In America, by and large the American people think of North Koreans as poor, brainwashed souls in need of saving. There's basically no confidence in their ability to self-direct their own future.
Yes, I read full statement of JC. I admit that it's really stupid but he meant well.
Sancom = teh weaboo propaganda :D
My first guess was something like Thailand.
Heh wait till one of his Styrofoam bridges collapses under his families car and kills them all. Too bad all of them are nationalist and propraganda mouth pieces for their communistic piece of shit countries. Including the psy guy from korea.
Hey its Gundam style he likes mecha.
Well, he has actually openly bashed China before in Hong Kong telling everyone not to buy electronics from China since they all explode :P
"I'M A CAPITALIST, I MATTER"
God damn people like you are far beyond the word mentally retarded.
I'm not a fan of Jackie Chan. I actually think he is nothing but a buffoon... BUT... That was taken COMPLETELY out of context. The idiot (Jackie) was trying to say that it takes a disaster on a major country to bring two otherwise adversaries together in aid efforts.
He chose the wrong words and context all on his own, but he meant no disrespect towards his slant-eyed friends on "that" island country.
No he has also said some very bad things about the usa and japan before. very bad things.
There are actually many very bad things about the USA and Japan. We say them about ourselves and each other.
I'm pretty sure he means insults and not merely negative traits.
Now, I don't know if such things were ever said, but I'm an avid burner of strawmen.
That was my take on it too, though I am a fan.
Wait, Sankaku is shocked that someone saying something nasty about some country or race of people? I guess they have never seen the comment section before.
As long as he keeps making some good movies he can say whatever he likes. Aww Freedom of speech isn't it great.
High quality movies like Rush Hour 3 and The Tuxedo, right?
You can blame America for making those really shitty movies.
You can also blame Chan for choosing to appear in them.
More like dragons forever and police story.
Last I checked, Jackie Chan was Chinese. Is everyone honestly shocked that he would say pro-Chinese shit?
i thought he was korean
Jackie's half black and he's fly, you down with that snoopy? that's dope isn't it.
@ Dianmond Dust
Blacks and Chinese, just different colored
shit.
keep it on the internet kiddo, for fear you'll get your head smashed open i'm guessing, or if you're not a pussy put on your kkk mask and go walk down the street like a real man. puss

How about keeping shit civil? What the fuck is a bunch of anons insulting each other on the internet supposed to accomplish? Sounds like we need an internetural disaster to stop the flamewars here -_-

and if there if it does not satisfied you well at least you took a while from that rage inducing comment by one of the rude or deeply well confused individual that was born in Hong Kong, and if you don't find this comment appealing then I am deeply sorry for this idiotic and unexpected comment in a website that appealed in the fan of Japanese culture and media.
P.S. This note was made for people like me and you.
P.S.S I'm deeply apologize for being stupid and uninformed in the college degree in writing.
P.S.S.S I'm Deeply apologize to those who are sensitive to vulgarity and/or otherwise planning to have a good morally supported relationship.
-considering the vast wealth and fame he's accumulated are about 99% due to WESTERNERS including Japan- remember he became famous in HONG KONG, NOT *CHINA* you'd think he might be a bit more circumspect in his public statements.
But no.
Jackie Chan is not blindly pro-Chinese considering in the past, he make many statement that almost get himself sacked from the honorable title he got in China.
More or less. It seems he wants to keep living the glamourous life. If all I had to do was say shit and get sponsored shit loads of money...I would too.
Ignorant fucks, he's been a pro-China since before Hong Kong went back.
Dont worry! EXPLOSION!!!!!!
Exactly.
Gets me everytime lol
must be chinese made
But Sancom passing around stories with links is nothing compared to what this guy is spewing.
Jackie Chan has high social status and is part of an entertainment industry that has a global audience.
What he did there is bad for business and confirms just how much of a communist cunt he is.
You think the world will stand alongside his country if conflict ensues. He's dead wrong.
Sancom weaboo wannabes are sensitive like that.
Also, Jackie Chan left out nuclear fallout, which they share with rest of the world via its ocean water.
Guess the China fanboy forgot about all the
nuclear bombs his heroes in Beijing have
set off over the years to poison the earth
and the atmosphere.
There's hoping one day they'll send a few over to weabooland, finish the job we started 70 years ago.
But then again, japs might do it themselves via self inflicted nuke before that happens.
I guess murica forget that they are the one who nuked Japan to dust, even now the Japanese hate them. Weaboo love Japan so much, even though they are hated there, only americans can be this dumb.
I dont know why 2:26 anon is hating on china, even if he is trying to make a point.
You do realize that the US does the same thing, right?
Weeaboos and japanophiles are a bane on the internets/world as much as any Nationalists out there. Just because one blindly bums the Japanese even though one is a foreigner can still make one a nationalist. Adopted nationalism is equally bad as nationalism.
AWW CMON WHO GIVES A SHIT, ITS JACKIE CHAN THE GUY COULD MAKE A HAPPY MEAL OUT OF THIN AIR
I almost seems like this comment is not truly wishing bad befalls Japan, but rather is was a good thing as people rushed to aid them and put aside political battles ("Without them people just engage in conflicts under political pretexts")
Though even still there was condescension when saying that they "needed" aid.
To be honest Japan doesn't have its shit together.
But yes, Sancon taking things out of context? Oh no! Alert the press!
Seriously, they need to get their anime and manga out of that country and into more capable hands while they fix their shit.
This is exactly what i took from what he said. Without disasters that make large parts of the world band together and aid the victims, people will stop giving a flying fuck and start wars that probably will end up killing more people than the disasters will.
Even though he could have formulated himself better, people are too quick to jump to conclusions. "He says earthquakes are good, so he must hate japan."
I simply hate people who just read/listen to parts that allow them to whip up a convenient shitstorm.
As for why he said 'a certain country', that could just be a bad formulation on his part. You can't expect everyone who was born outside an english speaking country to be able to perfectly formulate themselves all the time. Hell, you can't even expect it from most people who were born in an english speaking country and have lived there most of their lives.
He did learn English by watching the television, so can't expect him to sound appropriate.
What's so shocking about it tho, I think it's way better for a country to get hit by natural disasters and get outside help, open up because it HAS to, etc. than to exist in a current state. Look at best korea, they don't live, they exist. Hungry, poor, isolated, natural disaster would be a blessing for the north korean people, casualities would be a lot lower than straight forward conflict and people would actually go there to help and won't get hunted down as 'oppressors', unlike for example Iraq now.
