It's not a homage, it's a cross-promotion for both FFXIII-3 and FFXIV. Lightning gets a Miqo'te outfit in her own game.

...There's your reason, guns simply suck or are missing completely in FF's. I mean seriously, take a minigun to the face, 105 damage...pfff. Get slashed by oversized, overcomplicated and completely unbalanced sword wielded by a girly emo, 9999 damage!!!

None of the classes in FF14 have guns, so that is why.
One can hope to mod to acquire such weapons.

I've been playing this since it came out. Definitely a LOT better than version 1.0 which had very poorly designed game play. It is a bit easier than FFXI, but the graphics are really nice.
Time will tell if it will last as long as FFXI has.
My problem with FF14 is the constant clicking of buttons is an illusion of control, battles lack strategy and are now a seizure-fest of particle effects.
I played FFXI for 5 years, this is a heck of a lot better, the average random party wait here is 20 minutes for a damage dealer class, while in FFXI it was about a day or 3, not joking.
I like weapon with simple design it more looks cool than with this looks like toy for me

Crystal tower will be in the next update, gold saucer is coming at some point, some references are occasionally made, and some sound effects and tracks take inspiration from previous titles

FF14arr is doing pretty well though. Broke dozens of mmorpg records and is currently breaking a million subs and rising.
So no, the game is probably not going to die any time soon.
