The latest suspect man to be menacing the flower of the nation’s youth has been spotted “listening to a Walkman” near a school.
According to Tochigi public safety advisories, one evening a well built man aged 25-30 and 160-170cm in height and wearing a blue T-shirt was spotted walking around near an elementary school whilst “listening to a walkman.”
When this clearly suspicious individual was approached by the member of the public who reported the incident, he ran off.
Police warn that directly confronting such individuals may be dangerous and instead urge the public to report them.
That such a dangerous individual was spotted so close to a school clearly has many Japanese rattled:
“This is certainly dangerous.”
“How exactly was this suspicious?”
“Just going outside is suspicious these days.”
“Anyone within a 0.5km radius of an elementary school is clearly up to no good.”
“I don’t get what he did wrong?”
“His crime was not to use an iPod.”
“How did they know it was a Walkman anyhow? Did they just mean any music player?”
“They must have seen him change the cassette.”
“As if anyone still uses a Walkman…”
“It certainly would be suspicious to see someone with one.”
“The witness who approached him in this case was probably the more scary of the two.”
“Right – you’d be scared if some random person suddenly approached you like that.”
“However you look at it the reporter here was the suspicious one!”

Fucking nice Walkman. Now this is design.
Looking at it makes me so nostalgic about the days when people actually listened to full songs. Playing a song on repeat meant guessing how long you have to rewind. Now people skip around their media libraries like ADHD sufferers. I feel old now. Damn, I want one of these again.
I still have mine and working properly
Unfortunately I don't have a tape player anymore but I still got the cassettes. Nostalgic to have to find the right spot to stop the rewind and play but then as you listen you find that you like that song too so decide to rewind to that song instead. Good times.
My Sony Walkman, I don't think ever destroyed a tape. On the other hand, my Sony portable radio/stereo... developed a real taste for them. I was always a bit on edge when I used it to play one, ready to pounce on it and hit stop if the music disappeared for even a second.
I couldn't tell you how many new swear words I used/invented as I realized my Walkman had just stretched my new $12.95 cassette tape around the capstan and I would never get to hear the whole album again.
Those were the days....
Thank you eminem and other artists for learning bad language
same here.though battered-looking, my sony pressplay-station still works
As someone who listens to albums and not just songs, I sympathize with this. Yeah, I also listen to 20+ hour music collections on shuffle... but I understand that albums are also arranged with a certain continuity in mind sometimes, and something's lost when you ignore that.
I actually used to have that one. It was nice.
So did I. I was six when my uncle gave me one from Saudi Arabia, believe it or not, it's still working fine.
Spoiler : All Sony MP3 players are called Walkmans.
They're actually pretty good. Picked up a 16GB because owning an iproduct in this neighborhood marks you for death and subsequent mugging.
iproducts much like beats brand stuff are over rated hype anyway.
At least with Sony you're still buying something that's still a good product vs only having a hip name to stand behind.
I'm sorry that you have to live in such a shitty place.
:(
at least someone else in this world can feel sorry for something... i thought i am alone with this ability.
not that i think you are only saying this because you want to piss off someone else.
It's because NSA can't wiretap walkmans
Thought the same thing. Then I thought who the heck still owns a tape player...
I'm actually not sure if it was a walkman, considering he ran away, it might've been something that just resembled it... Like a camera.
ehm, maybe he was a jogger? :)
the teachers probably did not want anyone getting to their students before they did...
of course he ran away!! nowadays even if it is the girls that approach you , you are immediatly culprit of sexual crimes.
enven if the girl in question is a on sex industry... like the anime industry boss case.
people with no steady income maybe?
Or an appreciation for vintage electronics.
Or people who just like the feeling of a tape player...change the tape and stuff...
One can use something "oldschool" just for fun...pretty much like the vinyl...
Walkman mp3 player, probably.
Are you sure the person who saw him didn't just want to steal his awesome Walkman?
Why would you wiretap a walkman? They are not communication devices.
They could be listening to the sort of music that malcontents listen to. They could even be receiving terrorist organizational messages through planted tapes!
He might be with the IMF, and he was listening to his next assignment.
One could record their terrorist plans with the mic.
They could listen to your MP3's backwards for satanic messages or to learn who was the Walrus.
I'm suspicious of those adults who file into the facility before the students arrive and only leave after the students are gone! Clearly, they are up to no good!
(^ʘωʘ͠)/
(Which given some of the scandals, may actually be true)
Some of them are.
what a beautiful gadget, might be old tech, but still beatiful. a piece of art.
couldn't agreed with you more
it was at a time when SONY flourished....
And before Apple realease their iShit
fun fact - today's audiotape's 50th anniversary.
lol people, don`t you understand that some people like vintage sounds? is just like a LP fanatic.
Retro for the win!
But.. he could've been a time traveler from the past. XD
Marty McFly was visiting Tochigi.
Hopefully him and Doc will see the future is a total mess and try and correct the timeline.
lp is not a tape
I'm pretty sure that "listening to a Walkman" was not the reason that he is considered suspicious. It is more likely a distinguishing feature for police to look for.
the only reason he was suspicious is because he ran away from some crazy fucks ambushed near a school
That's a really pretty walkman, I want a mp3 with that chunky shell.
What a monster.
So you still shoot into private atmospheres?
Maybe was he a time traveler
I thought the biggest danger to the girls were the men INSIDE the school?
Must've been Shinji with this Walkman.
