Sega has come under massive fire after it somehow released an update to the PC edition of Phantasy Star Online 2 which began wiping user hard drives, adding insult to injury by offering $50 of coupons to those whose computers and precious data now lie in ruins.
According to users, with the most recent update the game’s launcher began randomly deleting unrelated folders from their PCs, with some complaining that the launcher took it upon itself to free up tens of gigabytes of space by deleting all and sundry.
With reports of the updater freely deleting its way through such sensitive locations as “Documents and Settings,” “Program Files” and naturally Windows itself, players are understandably aghast at an awe-inspiring level of incompetence from Sega’s coders, along with what must have been a less than exhaustive testing regime.
Sega’s moderately speedy response to the disaster has been to apologise and offer 5,000 yen of coupons or 10,000AC of game currency, as well as asking customers who suffered troubling data loss to contact them with details of their plight for what will presumably be some additional grovelling.
Meanwhile others cannot help but notice how well this plays into the hands of Square Enix and its recent and by most accounts highly successful relaunch of Final Fantasy XIV…

In the US, this would be a class action lawsuit.
Japanese are too cowardly to stand up for their rights. Agreeing to a $50 settlement, then paying a local repair shop between $250-500 for data recovery is the cowardly Japanese way.
Because the JP cops would arrest them for having a penis if they tried to claim lawsuit.
Naw the jp cops are too busy chasing anyone who even looks at someone under 18 in anyway. Especally if its a girl they are looking at. I mean they have man hunts for people that just asked for directions from a under 18 yr old girl. I mean really? are the cops that bored? All the guy did was pull over roll down the window and ask where something was, and that somehow warrants a prefecture wide manhunt?
so the answer is futanari then?
Shin-chan :O ????
YA but to be a man you must have honor and a penis.
It's funny, my comments which were once plussed and now neutral and no new comments have been added. Exactly what I would expect from a cowardly passive aggressive yellow skinned island monkey.

name yourself? you name your kids, not yourself
learn english, stupid faggot
In the U.S. customers would get a 5$ coupon and a complimentary dick slap over the face while 8-9 lawyers would bank ~ 2 million $.
the real joke is. .i actually did this same update at that day and specific time, on my windows 8 machine yet i faced no issues. while some users ended up somehow in a situation that their pc's allowed pso2.exe to delete files without user authentication.am guessing it was a lack of DEP feature that most recent machines/system's would have where as old hardware or systems wouldn't always have the feature.
Sega rises from the grave and promptly sticks it to its aged fans.
Yeah, they should count their blessings that they didn't release it in the US, UK or Germany(EULA states that current release is for Japanese only so they're not legally bound to anyone else at the moment). They'd be sued to Kingdom Come.
The first PSO could also ruin your memory card's data. And I think, it also could break your dreamcast. So they are consistent at least.
Back in the day a friend of mine tried streaming games from his PC to the GC by abusing the PSO online functionality. Thanks to that his savegame got corrupted. He then tried it again with my memory card, corrupting my savegame.... I shouldn't have trusted him lol
But thanks to that experience I switched from a level 89 Viridia HuMar to a Yellowboze HuCast and got up to 118. I got to love HuCasts and the Ybz ID + I got some really awesome equips^^
(Keep in mind that I got to those levels playing offline mode alone + it was 50Hz mode which is really slow compared to 60Hz mode)
Okay, but that was your memory card's data. Not your personal documents or system folders. And no, nothing software-wise on the Dreamcast would cause it to die. On newer consoles, in theory software can try to corrupt the HDD or firmware, but it would have to be a deliberate attempt to modify them - nothing poor coding would just happen to do.
Soul Calibur 3 on PS2 saved the game so often it exhausted the reading/writing cycles of the memory card, efectively turning it into a piece of usless junk.
Wait, that wasn't a SEGA game..
It's probably was their way to tell people "stop watching porn and play our game", but somebody forgot to place "*.avi" mask in the code
This is why i keep all my "pirated" and porn stuff on external backup drives and even if c:/Docume....
Uhmm oh wait I'm running Linux..
So uhmm Sux to be them buwhahaha
Sorry to burst your bubble, but everything under $HOME is just as vulnerable to unruly processes as C:\Users in Windows. Unix security does a great job at protecting the system from incursion, but it does a piss poor job at protecting user data.
Sure, you can run some fancy selinux setup and keep everything isolated under strict MAC rules, but let's be honest, you aren't doing that.
@ Anonymous 05:52:
"everything under $HOME is just as vulnerable to unruly processes as C:\Users in Windows." True.
"...but it does a piss poor job at protecting user data."
Uh, a piss-poor job, as compared to WHAT?
My way is to run Linux from a hardware-write-protected flash drive (SDMMC). $HOME lives in RAM, and vanishes when the laptop is power-cycled. Any "important" data, I copy to an external drive.
"got backups?" (and does your restore process work properly?)
You people are all fucking idiots. Learn to use linux before posting. All of you.
The capability-based security model.
I don't see the point. Most of the filesystem should already be write-protected by file permissions.
That sounds awfully inconvenient. Doesn't that mean you have to add rules for every program which stores state in home?
@ Anon 05:52/06:39:
"The capability-based security model."
Okay, not knowing what the "capability-based security model" is, I went out Googling and reading. I found numerous abandoned capability-based security model research OSes (research, not production -- and dead download links to said research OSes).
Currently, there's a capability-based security model project called "Capsicum" (http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/research/security/capsicum/), and experimental support for it in FreeBSD 9.0.
"Most of the filesystem should already be write-protected by file permissions." / "That sounds awfully inconvenient. Doesn't that mean you have to add rules for every program which stores state in home?"
The point of running via mostly-read-only is threefold:
* A successful laptop thief doesn't get my data;
* I carry my data with me, and can run on Any.Random.PC without worries about the software security (or lack thereof) of the OS installed on it, since I'm bringing and booting my own OS; and,
* If my OS ends up being "owned" by some drive-by attack, the ownage lasts only as long as current session.
I've got a script which over-writes selected config files in $HOME with my own preferences.
I'd like to run each of my games in a virtual machine; that's not workable for Windows-based FPS games until hardware VM technology (and supporting VM software) can give full access to the video card to a selected-by-me VM.
x86 virtualization is not bomb-proof, though. Both Intel and AMD's hardware has exploitable VM-related flaws. (See the Invisible Things web pages.)
ENJOY NO GAMES
Not everything works under Wine, but a lot of things do. Of course, you can always use a virtual machine. ;D
We have WINE, thanks for the concern.
Duel booting, wine virtual machine, now stfu.
And some of us even have a beer while playing on WINE
I guess no Sega picture could be found, so you went with swimsuit-wearing elf??
Thats a female newman from the PS series you uncultured turd.
And still no Sega picture, just a picture of a girl supposedly from some game.
You're not real clear on this whole culture thing, are you?
it's related. this SEGA debacle involves Phanatsy Star Online 2.
Newman is a playable race in that game.
Article portrait suggets it's a Female Newman wearing an AC swimsuit costume.
chill
You used culture incorrect fool.
Uninstall, Uninstall.
Sega is yandere at people playing FF14 reborn and not PS2O
no one cares about final faggot anything
Wow, just wow man, wow. I mean wow man just wow this is unbelieveable. If I for example did put a 'this will help you out computer script up and people ran it and it did that i would be in jail by the end of the month. 50 bucks on only coupon to buy more games? Wow man, i mean really now. wow just wow.

Living up to her reputation. XD
Sounds like an employee with a grudge.
Not if you've had experience playing PSO2, then you'd know how shitty their coders are.
Not necessarily. A game launcher has to download updates, install them and then remove the temporary files. This sounds like they screwed something up with the paths.
When dealing with paths, many things can go wrong. Especially when trying to convert absoluterelative paths. I'm willing to bet that this is where they fucked up.
One would think that the original developers would have put subpath tests in the patching framework to avoid screwups by the maintenance guys.
Agreed. This is definitely caused by an employee who got screwed somehow and wanted to ruin the company's reputation. Maybe not quite that cut and dry, but stuff like this is NOT an accident, and no amount of testing could stop it if it were coded in correctly by someone who knew what they were doing.
Even so, they could offer to pay for data recovery services. They're not that expensive and most people can probably afford it, but since it was their fault it would be the most pleasing move for the customer
deppends the data dude.
To recover deleted data is quite easy.
The main problem is when you format your hdd because a lot files will be corrupted or not able to find, since is needed a more advanced algorythm to recover the data...
and normally the price for recovery data service is 5 dollars per gigabyte
Recovery of a hard drive by professional company costs ~800-1000 usd in average.
Data recovery has been $500 to $12k in extreme cases when I had to get it done. Where do you go that's inexpensive?
Most of the lost data should be easy enough to recover even with free and low cost tools.
But anything that got over written is history.
>implying Sega still has a reputation as a "reputable" company

Everyone knows Sega is just a stone throw away from becoming the next SquareEnix. In fact, they may be tied with SE, due to the fact that Sega has abandoned all of their 'less popular' titles in favor of ones that sell on name alone, like all those awful 3D Sonic titles. Much in the same way SquareEnix milks Final Fantasy & Dragon Quest, while other titles like Romancing Saga & Mana are shelved.

I win motherfucker. You not nothing and we all know it.
Or an square Enix spy...
Sounds more like a failed attempt at tracking down & removing all your pirated content.
Sounds like grounds for a lawsuit.
It's called "conversion". It's an intentional tort, where the cause of action lies when someone takes your property, and damages it in such a way as to make it wholly unusable. The remedy is replacement of the item, or its fair market value (which, in the case of a PC, is likely a lot more than $50).
If you're 'murican.
Never assume malice where incompetence can fit.
