2DS “Actually Has 1 Screen” “Heavier Than 3DS”

The frosty reception enjoyed by Nintendo’s newly unveiled 2DS hand-held looks to have already frozen over completely, with confirmation that it has only one screen under its casing and somehow still weighs more than the 3DS doing little for its reputation as anything but “joke hardware.”
Nintendo gave a unique explanation of the device’s design:
“The appearance of separate screens is merely simulated by the way the case masks out the extraneous portions.
This means the entire screen is by necessity a touchscreen, with the upper screen protected by a layer of plastic that sits above it.”
This has naturally prompted many to ask just why they did not just make it into a full tablet anyway, as its non-folding design so obviously invites.
Nintendo’s own official model comparison also reveals the unflattering truth that the console manages to be heavier than the 3DS despite having shed functionality ranging from power saving to stereo speakers:
Fortunately the loss of 3D seems to have been greeted as a feature by most…

Hey it's that model that no one is forced to buy because they aren't phasing out the 3DS(XL), but let's all be mad at it for some reason.
But bashing Nintendo is so much fun! It's the only way some of us can get our kicks, really. It's pretty sad.
not really, it's proven that they can't do hardware design.. they should stop selling hardware..
@03:00
ahahahaha HAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA
what
whaaaaaaaaaaaat
@03:00
Holy crap, even the most hardened Nintendo hater wouldn't spit out incredible drivel like that. You must be a new breed of sorts.
In a world where Nintendo weren't responsible for almost every single controller feature that all companies use to this day, that might not be a totally and utterly hilarious, baffling, retarded statement.
But we don't live in that world, do we...
Nintendo designed the precursor to the modern controller (the rectangle one for the NES) and invented thumb-Analog sticks (until the N64 directional sticks were large and controlled with the whole hand and never combined with a D-pad)
@23:15 ignorance or fanboyism?
Nintendo ripped off all their ideas from other companies like Atari and Sega. They didn't invent jackshit, all they did was marketing. But I guess your clouded fanboy mind could not see past the giant ego you have created for yourself.
Yes, let's all get angry for no reason, just like Affleck and Batman, when were gonna support it anyway
Ben affleck playing batman is a pretty legit reason to get angry.
If everyone just spoke of how good it is there would be nothing to discuss, Just because you like it doesn't mean everyone else has to.
This is a laughably bad idea by Nintendo if people want to speak up on that let them, if you want to defended it do so but don't expect a hivemind.
OH MY, 25 GRAMS HEAVIER
YOU GUYS BE CAREFUL
YOU MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO LIFT IT UP
It's like a built-in Wii Fit.
nintenbro don't even lift
I doth lol'ed
This is a kid-friendly system, it's cheap, it's durable (no hinges), and there's no issue about the 3D hurting kids' eyes. This isn't rocket science, if you don't want it, don't buy it.
Thank you for being the first comment. Everyone needs to know this!
Many things a lot less complicated than rocket science are nevertheless far too complicated for nintendo haters to understand...
yeah i can't understand you masochists..
The success from releasing 2DS is that they might Increase the number of people buying 3DS / 3DS XL.
I've never broken a DS system in all the years I've played them since a kid. and I'm harsh on them. I also recall being able to disable the 3D in the parental section.... and this can't be put in a pocket.
Some kids are less responsible than what you were.
Some parents are less responsible that you'd imagine, and when their kids go cross-eyed from looking at 3d images that they've been advised to disable for kids, they still blame it on nintendo.
Note that i have no basis for those assumptions other than generally assuming that there are people who were dropped on their heads too many times when they were kids. :p
And it's cheaper than a 3ds, so i'm positive to the 2ds.
This is a MANLY-HAND-FRIENDLY system, it's cheap, it's durable (no hinges), and there's no issue about the 3D hurting a MAN's eyes.
everytime you translate a ... ninja appears. newest annoyance of the day much, huh?
But what about 3d hurting adult eyes~
Somebody actually said something intelligent.
I agree about the hinges - kids seem to break those first.
and if no one has ever noticed someone on twitter pointed out 2DS's launch day is the same as Pokemon X and Y sniff this out I smell a conspiracy
i love how gullible people can be made to take consequences for causes
Nothing wich needs your hands to be the same size as a NBA player is kid friendly. Period.
And the "nobody is forcing yo to..." is as much an argument as "now it comes with free pepperonni".
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/08/2dssize.jpg
NBA player my ass...
Cheap if you live in Usa, Canada and UK.
Exactly. Once again Artefact doesn't get the point. Not exactly surprising of course given his history of not understanding gaming hardware.
Use Parental Controls to disable 3D then, the durability is matched with the always-exposed screens. This isn't cheap, it's $130, $40 savings for a huge loss in functionality.
At launch versus the now aged 3DS. There's even a new 3DS (XL) and you're comparing the old one's price to this new product
>> at the expense of reduced portability
>> and increased cost.
Let's not forget about the decrease in quality.
The XL isn't a replacement for the standard 3DS. It's an alternate version for those wanting larger screens at the expense of reduced portability and increased cost. Nintendo still manufactures both models, so it makes sense to compare it to the standard one, which it's also most comparable to in terms of screen size and battery life. Being simply "new" is not a positive feature of this handheld either, since it's clearly a stripped-down model with reduced functionality and build quality.
is shit, nintendo fucking the poor
That actually makes sense. The top and bottom screens have about the same dot pitch. They can't make the image any bigger, or use the hidden parts of the screen because the platform wasn't made for it, but the firmware on the 2DS could just make it use the right parts of one bigger screen. Probably cheaper in bulk than using 2 small ones.
It's not by necessity a touchscreen all the way up though. I'm not sure what the most current resistive (plastic sheet) touchscreens use, but I've fixed PDAs where the digitizer is just a separate panel that fits over a screen - the calibration on DS/3DS suggests that too. So it's probably a big screen with a little touch panel. I know a "guy from Nintendo" suggested it's not, but he is US marketing, not JP engineering... I'll believe it when iFixit tears one apart.
An ugly flat brick is nothing more than just an ugly flat brick.
It's cheaper and more durable than the pretty flat brick!
It is delicious and flat; as I've never seen a well-worn DS (or SP) -without- broken hinges.
Flatness is a virtue.
This is obviously Nintendo's version of PSPGO...
Go was pretty good though, despite not selling all that well.
The same goes for GB Micro.
I would have some faith in 2DS if I were you.
As someone who loved the PSP, I thought the Go was absolutely stupid. Although this is mostly due to Sony expecting me to re-purchase digital versions of my physical UMD media rather than letting me migrate my PSP software over naturally.
If I wanted to go all-digital, my PSP would let me pirate games anyway.
No, PSPGO was SHiet! Basically everything that was good on the PSP was removed with the GO version. GB micro was different, it was only smaller and cuter, and also very cheap back then, so it was ok.
i dont like beeing called a psp owner when i do not own a psp but made copies of pictures and played sometthing on HIS tv with a ps3 controller.
maybe i just retook what i allways used?
before marketing decided to make fun about it?
Smart psp owners got a go.... hacked it made copies of all their hard copies and played them on their tv with a ps3 controller.
You mean PSP Street.
Except the PSP Go was lighter and smaller than a PSP, and launched at $120 more than the standard model, rather than $40 less. This is basically the opposite of the PSP Go. -_-
Please elaborate.
