Nintendo-2DS

The frosty reception enjoyed by Nintendo’s newly unveiled 2DS hand-held looks to have already frozen over completely, with confirmation that it has only one screen under its casing and somehow still weighs more than the 3DS doing little for its reputation as anything but “joke hardware.”

Nintendo gave a unique explanation of the device’s design:

“The appearance of separate screens is merely simulated by the way the case masks out the extraneous portions.

This means the entire screen is by necessity a touchscreen, with the upper screen protected by a layer of plastic that sits above it.”

This has naturally prompted many to ask just why they did not just make it into a full tablet anyway, as its non-folding design so obviously invites.

Nintendo’s own official model comparison also reveals the unflattering truth that the console manages to be heavier than the 3DS despite having shed functionality ranging from power saving to stereo speakers:

3ds-family

Fortunately the loss of 3D seems to have been greeted as a feature by most…

If there's one screen isn't it obvious that it'll be heavier that way? It's not like one of those screens is a sticker or something that tries to look like a screen, although with Nintendo you can never say for certain.

This is a kid-friendly system, it's cheap, it's durable (no hinges), and there's no issue about the 3D hurting kids' eyes. This isn't rocket science, if you don't want it, don't buy it.

The success from releasing 2DS is that they might Increase the number of people buying 3DS / 3DS XL.

Use Parental Controls to disable 3D then, the durability is matched with the always-exposed screens. This isn't cheap, it's $130, $40 savings for a huge loss in functionality.

At launch versus the now aged 3DS. There's even a new 3DS (XL) and you're comparing the old one's price to this new product

    Comment by Anonymous
    14:38 03/09/2013 # ! Neutral (0)

The XL isn't a replacement for the standard 3DS. It's an alternate version for those wanting larger screens at the expense of reduced portability and increased cost. Nintendo still manufactures both models, so it makes sense to compare it to the standard one, which it's also most comparable to in terms of screen size and battery life. Being simply "new" is not a positive feature of this handheld either, since it's clearly a stripped-down model with reduced functionality and build quality.

Some parents are less responsible that you'd imagine, and when their kids go cross-eyed from looking at 3d images that they've been advised to disable for kids, they still blame it on nintendo.

Note that i have no basis for those assumptions other than generally assuming that there are people who were dropped on their heads too many times when they were kids. :p

    And it's cheaper than a 3ds, so i'm positive to the 2ds.

Vita is a handheld, handheld marked is dominated by nintendo's 10-handhelds-a-year system... Vita's hardware is like 20x better than nintendo's, but Vita isn't a system for little kids... the problem is: adult gamers don't play handhelds that much.

Let's face reality: Nintendo makes stuff for younger audience (and adults who like stuff like that). But the people who make the actual games want a system that can handle their games!
You can argue about design and those weird Sony-presentations... but to ME the only important things are: The GAMES that I play.

It's sad to say this cause I loved Nintendo back when it was good! But I'm not a fanboy or a "kid's soul" or whatever, and I'm not "loyal" to a company when it's about MY money which I have to pay for the games (although I'm rich).

So, no I don't pull random shit on you. I won't stop you if you want to crawl into Nintendo's ass forever, but wouldn't it be better to not favor a certain hardware brand, and just judge by the facts?

I know Nintendo fans won't like what I'm saying, and this post will get so much negatives XD ...this world is so easy to understand, it's hilarious. maybe I am god? hmm...

I'm......really trying to wrap my mind around why removing the 2D prompted this hideously misshapen design. Just take it from me, kids will not fall for this. It's fucking huge, it's heavier than its predecessor, and its unwieldly as all hell. Really, what about this is supposed to appeal to kids? And I'd like to hear the answer from people that actually have kids, because honestly saving $30-40 dollars on a piece of ugly hardware that's just going to get abandoned by kids with actual taste and common sense is not worth a system that's trying to market itself as a '2D alternative to the original'.

Case in point, the Gameboy Advance SP. It was sleek, smooth, it folded itself for compact storage for easy carrying, it folded in itself to protect the screens and buttons from wear and tear, and it featured an improved backlight screen and energy capacity. It was the design that -all- their proceeding systems were based on, and it worked.

Bottom line, this is ugly. I'm seriously going to point and laugh out of town any person dumb enough to be caught in public with one of these, regardless of their age group.

Why in the world would they make the same thing except without the 3D functionality, if said functionality is ENTIRELY OPTIONAL to begin with?

Might as well redesign the thing, if you want foldable, buy 3DS, simple as.

it seems they dont wanna, if i where them i would leave the space for a larger battery and then sell it to those who truly want them (especiall propietary battery design and plugs of course) a 6000mah battery would cuadruple playing time (12 hours is more than plenty)

    Comment by Anonymous
    15:44 03/09/2013 # ! Neutral (0)

They're not going to improve battery life on a budget version of the handheld. Most likely, they'll eventually release a new standard version of the 3DS with better battery life and other additions and refinements.

And Imyou, the 3DS is hardly the new Game Gear. Battery run-time may be comparable, but with the game gear, you needed to replace six disposable AA batteries every time the charge ran out, as opposed to the competition's four AAs that would last 5 times as long. That made a big difference then. Now, the 3DS and other portable gaming devices all have built-in rechargeable batteries, so there's no need to purchase bulky external battery packs or constantly burn through piles of disposables.

Plus, all the current handhelds now have fairly similar battery life. Whether you're gaming on a 3DS, Vita or tablet, you're not going to get much more than a few hours of run-time when playing hardware-demanding games. This isn't like the Game Gear versus the Game Boy, since none of the competition is offering a device with vastly better battery life. And really, they don't absolutely need to. How long do most people play a portable gaming device for away from a power source? If you're at home, there's an AC adapter. It wouldn't be bad to have a little extra headroom, but the existing battery life of the 3DS and other current devices could be considered reasonable given typical usage scenarios.

Yeah, I know what it was like using a Game Gear compared to a Game Boy, which is why I made the comparison. I have a 3DS and it's the first time I've had a handheld that regularly dies while I'm playing it. I've had a GB, GBC, GBA, GBA SP, PSP-1000, DS Lite, PSP-2000, Vita, and 3DS, and the 3DS' battery is just shit. The PSP and Vita give me about 5 hours, which is enough to play away from home. The 3DS gives me 2-3 hours, unless it's been sleeping for a while, in which case it's guaranteed to be less - sometimes like 30 minutes (where the PSP/Vita can sleep for weeks.) There are also a number of games it can't even sleep on, so it's either play on until you can save, quit and throw away progress, or close the shell, at least turning off the screen and speakers, and expect it to be flashing the red warning lights an hour later when I have a moment for games again. The 3DS isn't devoid of good software, but it is a dinosaur in the modern era.

    Comment by Anonymous
    23:56 06/09/2013 # ! Neutral (0)

I do agree about the poor sleep time. My last portable gaming device was a DS Lite, and that thing had awesome battery life. With moderate use, you might go a week or more without charging it, and it would last for days in sleep mode. The first time I tried leaving my 3DS in sleep mode, I came back to it the following morning to find it already powered down. It apparently isn't particularly good at shutting down hardware components when asleep. Perhaps part of that is due to it keeping chipsets active for streetpass, the pedometer and other things though. The battery itself is supposed to have about 30% more capacity than the DS Lite, so Nintendo didn't really scrimp there, they just didn't optimize the hardware for power efficiency as well as they probably could have. I suspect they'll release a "3DS Lite" eventually that addresses this.

For the most part the battery is reasonable for my usage though. I play it more at home than elsewhere, so it's more often plugged in while playing. It's also worth getting a cheap USB charge cable for the device, so that it can be powered by a laptop or car lighter adapter when needed. Certainly, the battery life isn't ideal, but it's not was I would consider a device-breaking flaw.
