Nintendo Unveils 2DS: “Talk About Unhinged!”

2ds-1

2ds-2

Nintendo’s announcement of the 2DS, boasting no 3D, no hinges and a lower price, looks as if it may please parents but has gamers in an uproar – most seeming to be of the opinion that it is another Virtual Boy or even PSP Go.

The 2DS features full compatibility with DS and 3DS games, albeit without any 3D display, and ditches the clamshell design in favour of an elegantly brick-like dual-screen “tablet” format.

Its major feature is a lower price – dropping to $129 from the $169-$199 of the existing 3DS models.

The cheaper price and – crucially, in light of medical research suggesting “3D” displays may be dangerous to young children which Nintendo has been at pains to ignore – 2D display are believed to be intended to make the 2DS particularly appealing to younger gamers and their parents.

Europe and North America are confirmed as having October releases, with Japan’s release as yet unannounced.

2ds-3

Nintendo has also announced a US price cut for its less than spectacularly successful Wii U, with the 32GB model dropping to $299 in September.

To say the 2DS announcement has underwhelmed Japanese gamers would be an understatement, although how it plays to western markets is another matter:

“So it’s back to 2D after all that hype!”

“This is a joke… right?”

“Who wants this. Why’d they dump 3D all of a sudden?”

“Something to do with patent issues was it?”

“3D just makes your eyes hurt, no wonder they finally dropped it.”

“This one looks pretty hard to control.”

“Not being able to fold one of these is surely some kind of punishment.”

“The design looks absolutely awful.”

“Was it April 1st already?”

“Huge and unhinged, all we need in a portable!”

“Ditch the 3D and make it solid, but slightly cheaper. Who wants this?”

“Removing the 3D is all very well but making it unhinged like this is just sadistic.”

“You’d think they’d have given it one big screen if they went flat like this…”

“The next generation Virtual Boy!”

“This is pure joke grade hardware.”

“A kid might get away with this but no adult could possibly use it in public.”

“Nintendo really seem to have been reduced to relying on their name to sell this stuff.”

“I think they wanted to go for a stylish tablet but this was the end result.”

“Actually I wouldn’t mind one, the folding design is a nuisance if you are used to tablets.”

“Good riddance to 3D, but this design – seriously?”

“I still think it looks like a dodgy Photoshop.”

I like the idea, price and marketing, but cringe on that design though. I do like that the Start and Select button is now back to being "buttons".

I'll probably buy one in the future exclusively for Japanese games.

Won't it be region locked? Are you going to buy one from Japan?

Yes, that's the main idea. I already have a US region 3DS, won't hurt to buy this one If I only want to play Japanese game.

    And 3D flops again.
Will it be 3rd time lucky? Certainly not with Nintendo's lack of ergonomic design.

I fully expect to see these to be as rare as a Game Child in 10+ years.

    I don't think so.

Price is still higher than what I paid for my used 3DS.. (I wouldn't pay over a hundred bucks for any kind of console. Ever.)

Not even little children would appreciate it. It's a handheld that'll never fit in anyone's pocket (least of all a young child's), the placement of the buttons and analog stick is completely discombobulated, and its top-heavy. Oh, and it doesn't fold up like its predecessor.

Seriously, if they want to make a model that has no 3D capabilities, fabulous. I think Nano Assault was the only game that actually had its experience enhanced by 3D, so its not like I'd miss that feature that much.

But this design change is beyond ugly. And gay. Did somebody design this while they were drunk?

    12:51 29/08/2013 # ! Neutral (0)

it was a flop in the sense that nobody really uses it for anything particularly meaningful.
and according to polls most 3DS owners were turning the 3D functionality off to begin with.

besides, realistically this is a move not aimed at whether 3D did or didn't fail but aimed at shoring up some positive profits for the company.

even with the 3DS recovering, the WiiU is still on life support and getting worse.
Nintendo has admitted that as of right now they're still selling it at a loss, and they now just dropped its price even more to try drum up sales. except when you're selling at a loss, selling more units just means you're losing more money especially now with the unit being sold AT A GREATER LOSS.

but its about all Nintendo can do because they need to inflate that WiiU install base.

but with all that said, they need something to make up for all that money going down the drain.

in comes the new "3DS" model.
as a new model alone, it has a chance to make them some money.
selling it as a cheaper product, with obstensibly a lower production cost making for higher per unit profit, hopefully ensures a hit product with the 2DS which will generate some profits to offset the albatross that is the WiiU currently

whats the problem? its not like they're going to switch all productions to this model and this looks way more comfortable. the way the 3ds xl is balanced (or any DS for that matter), the center of gravity pivots on the index fingers since you're holding it from the bottom half. by placing the entire thing in the center of the hand it makes for more comfortable play sessions.

Sure the 3D function is removed by I think we all knew it was a gimmick. if I could have gotten my 3ds for 50 bucks cheaper with the 3d removed, i would have jumped on that.

You may call it a gimmick, but I love it and I keep the 3D slider on my XL at the highest setting at all times.

I'm actually kinda disappointed by this news, because this might mean some developers might be less inclined to actually put effort in creating a good 3D effect.

Visually, there's nothing quite like a 3DS game that has had proper care put into its 3D graphics.

Agreed, the 3D is on for me for all games, and not only does it help judging distance between stuff, the graphics are sharper.

Nintendo can't compete against the iPod Touch & similar products, so this is their solution. Neither can Sony, which is why even the 3G enabled Vita dropped to $200 at Target.
