Xbox One Video Features “Cost $60”

xbox-one

Microsoft is facing yet another PR disaster after revealing many of its touted Xbox One features require an Xbox Live Gold account, even as Sony glibly confirmed they were free on the PS4.

An annual Xbox Live subscription costing in the region of $60 will be required if Xbox One users want to make and share gameplay videos (improbably billed as a “social” killer app for both consoles), as well as if they want to make Skype calls, use Netflix, browse the web, or using its (death)matchmaking services.

Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida was as ever quick to capitalise on the news, confirming that no premium account is required to use gameplay recording features on the PS4.

Even so, PS4 owners will have little to crow about – a $50 PlayStation Plus account will be required to play PS4 games online.

Whether real users will actually want to use these video sharing services, or whether more niggardly games companies will still occasionally attempt to prosecute them for copyright infringement on the basis of videos of their play, remain unaddressed issues.

However, as always with US products and services sharing with the NSA is completely free – and thanks to the power of Kinect now includes the mandatory addition of a continuously recording video camera and microphone…

Having to pay even more for Netflix and Skype? Microsoft isn't thinking this one through are they?

It seems they want to fail.

Really if Sega ever wanted the perfect opportunity to get back into the console market now is the time.

Making something equal to the Xbox one would be something in the realm of a few garage tinkers.
Making something that raises the bar past even the PS4 is something that only requires a small team of engineers less then 100 and a call to IBM, TSMC or GlobalFoundries and one of the video card manufactures.

the ps3 is largely an apu that costs about 300$ retail.

realistically, it's not hard to beat the ps4 in terms of hardware, no, the problem comes from you need to have the hardware in planning for at least 2 years with a rough, under estimate of what the end hardware will be so game makers can make a game for launch. you then need to have consumer friendly anti piracy, like the 360 had, that doesn't hinder the experience of the console.

you than mandate that user sponsored servers for online is a must, and p2p hosting is used only if no servers are available, which you facilitate on a server to a very small cost to you that you eat with every game sold.

all in all, for me to build a computer that would be better than the ps4 graphically, it would cost all of 500$ (ram, hdd, psu all included, with psu costing the most because you never want that to fail)

with bulk and corporate discounts, you could probably sell these at 450-500$ and be profitable, but that still doesn't mean you could succeed, you require the games, which they many not be able to bring for another 2 years, which would be well into this console's life cycle when people break down and already bought one. it would be almost impossible to do this gen... possibly next gen though.

As an owner of both consoles, PlayStations network is really crappy compared to Xbox live so I don't see why they compare a free piece of crap to something good that costs a little of money. If you can't manage $60 a year then you're a little kid or can't manage a job.

Another possible plan would be to make these kind of declarations, see people rage, and then revoke the idea.
In doing so they will let people think "Oh hey, Microsoft is reasonable if you react to them", and opening some sort of 'open source', mass-fed ideology in Microsoft's name which tends to be good PR.

I know some companies have done this kind of stuff before and have become rather popular now. Hope this isn't the way MS is gonna try to work with, cause we know in the end there's a catch. And it'll leave you without your wallet.

I don't think the people over at Microsoft are intelligent enough to pull off such a plan. The ONLY reason MS went back on their DRM policies was because the PS4 was out selling the xbone something like 10 to 1 in preorders.

No amount of public outrage will deter MS, the only thing that will get them to reconsider is if people begin canceling their preorders en masse.

    Probably won't work.
Microsoft fucked up so hard, people will be more like "Those are the people who tried to screw us over".
Especially when they are constantly compared to Sony, who did a much better PR job than MS.
People go for the PS4 just because Sony didn't act like a bunch of deluded douchebags.
News like these are just icing and sprinkles on top of the Sony cake.

MS PR only fell on def Sony fanboy ears! I actually liked alot of their initail ideas for drm so I could bring any game anywhere. But the reality is that this site thati understand is pro japan is also pro biased to the usa or any other culture or country. Hence the use of niggardly in this sentence. "Whether real users will actually want to use these video sharing services, or whether more niggardly games companies will still occasionally attempt to prosecute them for copyright infringement on the basis of videos of their play, remain unaddressed issues." So what are you saying (the article's author) that the game companies are ignorant or that they're acting like niggers (more commonly stereotyped as african american males)

Fuck this site for the use of this word and the biased thought that $60 xbl fee doesn't have value, especially for those already with xbl!

Learn to use a dictionary. 'Niggardly' is an old word that means 'cheap' or 'miserly'. Perhaps it is not this site that is racist, but the would-be champion of the poor, downtrodden African-Americans who can't help but see racial slurs in every word that bears even the slightest passing resemblance.

Microsoft has a tradition of shooting itself in the foot. When the competition outsells them, they'll either waive the fees or aim approximately five and a half feet higher.

Do your research. Gold has ALWAYS cost $60 a year, even less when you find cards on sale. I appreciate your fanboyism but at least appear intelligent and research the matter a bit, first.

Sony too has a history of shafting customer. Removing OtherOS and charging for PS2 classics wrapped in a .pkg when slims have a fairly good PS2 emulator that, without CFW, cannot be accessed. I know bashing the XB1 is the cool thing today, but get your shit in order before opening your mouth.

Before telling others to do some research you might do a little more yourself since Gold has not always cost $60. It actually used to be only $50 until M$ added ESPN, Youtube, and other apps and said that the $10 increase was necessary in order to fund those apps. Although I think anyone is crazy to pay the full price since, as you mentioned, it's easy to find a Gold subscription on sale for at least $10 off. I don't think I have ever paid full price for a yearly subscription.

Not exactly, with Valve paving the way to Linux gaming we may see future games available on more than just Windows.

    Comment by Anonymous

Not outside Steam you won't. Linux will never gain footing outside business server rooms and 3rd world countries.

DRONES LAW states that any drop in Windows 'desktop OS' sales will be filled by an Apple sale.

And before you try to rebuke that law, all of you pirates, that never planned to buy Windows/Apple don't count. People who never intended to buy anything are pirates, not customers. Your opinions, much like your 'vote' are invalid. End of story.

You can't discount the "will not purchase" factor completely. If everyone buys Windows, Apple loses, yes. If everyone buys Apple, Windows loses. If less by one, the other will pick up the slack...but if NO ONE buys, there is no market and both lose. The vote might not count, but a 100% non-voting populace speaks louder than a landslide victory on either side.
