    Not really, no. Konata isn't trying to be anyone else and completely revels in her lifestyle. Tomoko is is trying too hard to become something she isn't.

    But yeah, Konata wouldn't work is a RL entity in Japan.

    Ever see that girl that looks normal to below average? That one girl who's quiet and has no friends? That one you called the weirdo and decided not to give a fuck about and just look away at other things? That's supposed to be Tomoko. That's the girl, that's what the creator is trying to make.     Frankly, it is her fault. First, she needs to take better care of herself. And for the love of, go and have a proper night's sleep for a change.

    Next she needs to stop creeping out her brother and be more open and honest with her friend. These two people have social sense, judging by the fact that THEY HAVE FRIENDS. She could learn a thing or two from those two.

    However, these people can offer advise on how to connect with other people, which is something she is completely clueless about. It won't solve her problem overnight. Hell, it might even take her months. However, it is a start and it's better than moaning forever about her unpopularity.

    That's not Tomoki's point. Tomoki's character is supposed to be a below average looking girl, why can't people see that? She's not Cinderella that you just need make-up and fashion sense. The artist drew her that way because you're cutting your potential fans if you drew someone ugly. The artist had to make her cute enough to not scare away watchers, but add enough eyebags and bad fashion to point out she's not really pretty.

    You've just been watching too much anime to think that everyone is a potential good looker.

    It is never factually stated that she is a "below average" looking girl. I remember the notion that describes her as plain, which means she doesn't particularly stand out. At this point, you'd have to ask yourself if that's mostly cosmetically true or because she's simply plain looking from the start.

    Going by her relatives, they are all normal looking as far as i can tell. Tomoki has girls fantasiting about him, the father looks like your basic middle-aged male and the mother is also fairly pleasant to look at.

    My opinion is that Tomoko would be perfectly alright, without her cosmetic challenges (fashion,eye-rings, disheveled hair etc.)
    However, there's still the psychological problem of her awkward behavior.

    She isn't drawn ugly at all. In fact, she has to put some real effort into looking really ugly when she was trying to hide her identity in front of her classmates.

    To whole point of the show the extent that your own neurosis just adds up to the already considerable social pressure of modern days. Tomoko is way too self-aware and manic about changing into another fake persona for the sake of meaningless "recognition".

    Meaningless because she completely fails to see the blessings and real recognition she already has (a loving family, a very good friend, health, a safe living environment).

    She's not ugly (cept for the bags under her eyes, if you're not into that). She has zero sense of fashion and is very socially awkward to the point of high functioning autism. If she had someone else dress her and tell her how to behave she could be "hot."

    Truth is, she's below average. But of course the artist wouldn't draw the MC as an ugly girl. Not in a generation that loosely relies on cute girls and pretty characters. If the artist did that their demographic will be greatly reduced. She's drawn that way for the same reason Sunako was drawn chibi instead of butt ugly in Yamato Nadeshiko, so they wouldn't scare away potential watchers. Think of it like this, you ever meet that weird girl who's always alone and has little to no friends and you don't bother because her looks are nothing to exert effort about? Yeah, that's the Tomoki.

    She really just displays humongous amounts of social anxiety, to the point where even the simplest interaction with other human beings is like climbing a mountain. She seems to understand the social norms fairly well too, up to the point that she chokes and falls on her face when actually having a social experience.

    She seems intelligent, clever, and decently engaged with life when she is alone. She kinda acts like a hikkimori that forgot to stay home.

    She see's negative things in people of her own accord. That social anxiety is a little there but that's no excuse for the rest of her personality.

    She falls on her face because she's too self-conscious. What's bad is she doesn't seem to acknowledge that others have been kind to her. And her treatment of her brother is horrible mixed with "some" good such as when he was sick.

    This MC keeps getting worse and worse with each episode. An interesting note is the English translated title. What is it? It's not my fault I'm not popular? To me, this says a lot about her as the lead character. It's a 5 letter word that starts with a B.

    She is like that puppy who keeps running into that glass wall. Even when she was shown the revolving door, she will either just follow that revolving door and get back to where she came from, or just miss that door entirely and slam into the opposite glass wall. It's painful to watch.
