After a series of cosplay efforts which seemed more designed to provoke angry fans into a publicity inducing furore than win them over with cuteness, SKE48’s Rena Matsui and Nogizaka46’s Rina Ikoma have saved the day by earning much praise for their “too cute” portrayals of magical puellae Homura and Madoka.
The cosplay appears in the September issue of fashion rag “Smart,” with Rina also providing some additional Madoka by way of an omake on her blog:
Nogizaka46, though billed as an AKB48 “rival” group, is managed by Akimoto as well and so probably owes more to his canny efforts to create some pro-wrestling style inter-group tension than any actual rivalry.
SKE48’s Airi Furukawa has also previously been noted for her efforts:

It might just be me, but that is some fucking CREEPY-ass lighting.
Yeah, they went nuts with the lighting. It too strong all over.
they did it to cover up how ugly these girls really are
Rena Matsui is actually very pretty without lighting and make up. Learn to research you dumbass.
Yes, it's only the lighting that's creepy...
I didn't realise there were men in SKE48.
Horrible choice of lighting by photographers of the magazine...
i am in akb1 austria faggotry club. only 1 member.

sankaku has been paid...
If you read the comments, you'll notice there's actually people defending AKB in the last few articles. I was sure, seeing the tremendous amount, they would cave.
They are a company, after all.
they have been paid? by whom?...
only reply if it is my ................ .
still better than otaku/wota looked into the mirror...
i guess they have been "paid a visit" or some BS like that?

Rena would've been so much better as Kyoko. HINT HINT
Ugly, all of them.
Not bad. But not the greatest I've seen. Mami looked bit shite tho.
At least they're not fat like usual madoka cosplay :D
The fact that AKB48 is cosplaying, and that what they cosplay is an anime with some loli/yuri fanservice is a fucking great thing.
You know, AKB48 is a mainstream pop idol group beloved by many japanese people (most of them probably don't watch anime but sazae-san or mainstream tamed shit). This will help anime to be seen with right eyes again, and to return the "otaku culture" to the point it was some years ago before right wings old hags started bashing it.
(And mainstream studios probably will not have the necessity of pandering woman or fujoshi so much to get funds, in fact this will probably help to save anime).
I was happy when they got the AKB0048 anime, because that lead many normalfags to start watching anime. But the fact they are cosplaying is better than that.
And also they are cosplaying a shaft anime (who really delivers), and not one made by those kyoani betrayers.
urgh... madoka looks decent on this one.. the rest are.. urgh.. as always 2D>3D
Please turn down background lighting next time! mr.photographer
yokel's do not follow rules.
Madoka cosplays always trip on the eyebrows.
I'M GOING TO VOMIT! This combines the two worst possible things to combine. 3DPD and Maduka.
“They Can Cosplay After All!”
No they cannot.
wow, must be easy to be a photographer for AKB48...
you're wrong : that guy had to win a worst photo contest first, get an absence of artistic sense degree, and produce a certificate for partial blindness, he damaged his own eyes for.
This job is NOT for everyone.
These cosplays certain beat that horrible Asuka cosplay though.
I fail to see the popularity of Madoka, i guess it's like cinnamon toast crunch.
I haven't watched ityet but a magical girl anime made by the creator of Saya no Uta sounds interesting.
It's simple. It's popular because it's a trap/troll that has you thinking it's a typical girly, happy magical girl show at first, and then BAM! It crushes your delusion in the third episode when it kills one of the main characters by having her have her head chomped (yes, "chomped", not "chopped") off...An then it goes on from there. It's a dark show that's not in any way meant for little girls.
Really though, I'm surprised you've managed to not pick up on why it's popular after all this time, considering all the attention it has gotten. :-/
It depends. I was one of those that saw the previews that aired during Arakawa Under Bridge.
When it come out, I watched the first ep was like ok... seems kind of like your typical moe show with a Hidamari Sketech character design... but then Kyuubey made his appearance, and we learned about wishes, witches, and other mysterious things. I always watch a few eps from each series, so I continues watching and as Rokudaime mentioned, the third episode was a shocker.
At this point, those of us that were watching the series were waiting eagerly each week for the new episodes to air. What will Madoka use her wish for? Will she bring back XXXX? Or will she use it to turn XXXX back to normal? Each week was filled with anticipation, and the rest as you know is history.
So those of use fortunate enough to watch the series the first time around, we got to experience the suspense and speculation of the show as it was originally airing. This was especially true since there was a delay between the 10th and 11th episode due to the earthquake/tsunami. I still remember the agony of waiting for the last eps to air.
However, since the show was completed, there have been those those either trolled the show, or over hyped it. I think that if the typical anime fan were to watch this series, without anyone overhyping, trolling or otherwise influencing their expectations, most would probably find this show to be amazing. But to those that have been influenced, or have read spoilers, or only like high action type-A shows, they may have a different opinion. Also, this is a pretty serious/emotional show, so those looking for comedy will not find much here.
I however, personally feel that this is among one of the top psychological Anime series ever, and has good replay value as you will notice small details that you may not have given much thought the first time you saw, but after watching again makes sense, particularly Homura's expressions and her actions. Definitely worth at least checking out.
I apologize in advance if my praise comes off as overhyping.
I personally know multiple people who do far better Madoka cosplay than this, hell, one of the cashiers at the grocery store by my house can pull of a far better Homura, and and of my co workers does a much better Madoka, and he's a dude.
