Square Enix Announces New Star Ocean: “You Guessed It!”

star-ocean-material-trader-2

Loyal Star Ocean fans are the latest to be given the full Square Enix treatment, as the announcement of the latest and greatest title in the Star Ocean franchise seems to have left much to be desired in their eyes.

The new title, Star Ocean: Material Trader, is an “item creation card RPG” set to be distributed by GREE on mobile platforms in the near future:

For some reason fans of the series are not happy:

“Wow!”

“It’s over now…”

“Fuck off Square!”

“God, could it get any worse…”

“They changed the character design for good measure?”

“Thanks GREE!”

“Nice to see these two great companies cooperating.”

“GREE are besmirching another great franchise with their filth I see.”

“Who cares, I already switched to western games so it is no skin off my nose!”

“I guess I should not have got excited when I saw this announcement, it is Square Enix after all.”

“They slapped the SO name on this trash but it has nothing to do with SO. Still, this isn’t some AAA franchise so perhaps this is an actual prelude to a new release?”

    No, fuck YOU.

'Square' is something reserved for premerger SQUARESOFT, which was great under Sakaguchi's lead if only not for that one 3D movie.

Don't insult Sakaguchi's legacy by calling Square Enix what it is not.

I see now, thanks to both anon(14:11) and anon(16:18, I will remember that "developed by" doesn't always mean "Owned by." Also, did Tri-Ace sign with Sega after the last Star Ocean game, or did I get that wrong too?

Well, they DID make Resonance of Fate for SEGA, but they HAVE been making quite a few more games for Konami lately. Hmm...where are these games anyway...oh yes.

    --Japan Only.--

That tells you everything you need to know about Squeeeeenix. SEGA is a better company to make RPGs for than Squeeeeenix is.

Though tri-Ace DID develop Final Fantasy XIII-2, apparently.

I don't see what the problem is. Square-enix never said they weren't making anymore Star Ocean games. We already know Square is pushing out more mobile games. I wouldn't be surprised if they made a final fantasy card based for mobile.

Plus we haven't heard in awhile what Tri-Ace is working on.

No, but Square (Enix) DID promise to stop making crap games. Or rather, that they would "Scrap the rubbish".

http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2013/06/26/nomura-final-fantasy-xv-is-an-action-game/ - Wait...I thought this was supposed to be an Action RPG...where's the RPG in my RPG?

http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2013/06/27/square-enix-names-wada-new-chairman/ - First they fire him for his ineptitude, now they make him their new chairman of its board...good grief.

And for the games Sankaku missed (or whatever):

Seiken Densetsu: Circle of Mana - Social Card Battle Disease.

Final Fantasy: All the Bravest - A pay-a-thon Social Disease.

Square Enix Legend World - Guess what? It's a Social Card Battle Disease!

Yay, Square (Enix). Go. Whoopie. At this point I hope they just declare bankruptcy and sell their IPs to studios who have more in their noggin' than your average scarecrow.

Before, I thought they were dead, after seeing the shoddy work on one of the new FF games (with the "horse-birds") and the other card game. When I saw the action FF at E3, I thought they had a chance. Now I know they're dead. They could actually pull in some good profits like this, actually, but dead in the sense that they won't be making what Square fans are into anymore.

(Yeah, sorry - I don't remember which FFs they were. I'm actually a pretty disinterested third party in this. I thought they did brilliant things in 1997, and TWEWY was great, but overall if they vanished, I'd be ok. I'd rather they kick ass, but... ah well.)

It's hard for me to be angry at Square Enix that much. I'm disappointed, of course, severely, as I have been with almost everything they've done for the past ten years. But it's not like Namco, Capcom, Sega and every other fucking game company aren't doing the same thing, whoring their IPs into trading card games and cellphone games and cellphone trading card games that cost them next to nothing, require little to no effort and give them easy profits. Most anime studios are doing the same thing, too. Killing Square Enix over this is like removing one tumor when the cancer has already metastasized. You need enough chemotherapy to take the whole system down, not just one company that decided to play the game. And the treatment might just be so severe it kills the patient.

    Comment by Anonymous
    12:32 20/07/2013 # ! Neutral (+0.2)

Yes, but at least THOSE companies actually still make good games regularly. Capcom? They have games coming out. Sega, obviously have games coming out. Namco has the Tales series as well as a number of other IPs to justify it. Square Enix? Oh, Final Fantasy for the next console (not that it has been anything resembling what it was when it was good since PS2 came out)... Deus Ex or whatever... and yeah, nothing for a good while.
However, when was the last time Star Ocean got a new release? 2010, then they teased another game since this series has essentially limitless possibilities; and NEVER went through with it. Now they do this whole boring-ass mobile game stuff, which yeah; is ok once in a while, but this is a total kick in the balls for everyone who's been looking forward to a new game from this IP. Star Ocean is a unique and fun series, there is no series in existence like it; but suddenly they stop doing things with it, and now they've dug it's grave.

If SE does porn though, don't make the mistake of thinking the games they make would be anything better than Illusion's.

Why? It's PORN. Things like that are supposed to thrive on high sales with very low capital, because sex is one of those things people are desperate to have no matter how fake or bad it is. Otherwise, that piece of shit Illusion made called Happy End Trigger wouldn't sell one fucking copy.

Only children and the desperate settle for any old porn. Porn is elevated by its scenario and believability, and to pretend otherwise just means people don't think. Only one who somehow thinks that porn is below them is dumb enough to not recognize what makes atruly engaging and erotic porn rather than something that is just someone banging someone else. And yet stupid people continue to say the words 'lol, but its porn' as if they even know what they're talking about. These are the same people I'm sure who think they're actually good in bed with no other evidence than their own egos.

Cutting down on the selfish and the stupid always triggers down votes :P Even live action porn need eroticism, even a little. A scenario of a guy and girl having sex via a sensual encounter, a story, or even a fake rape scenario is always more erotic than just a clip of banging that starts and ends the same way. It's like having a story with no beginning or end. JAVs tend to be a lot better because they actually seem somewhat decent at this, American porn by and large just have people that don't even commit, so it just ends up being dumb no matter what the scenario. People don't think about the suspension of disbelief affecting a porn scenario, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to recognize that it does. Just like any roleplay in any sexual situation.

I've seen plenty of pretty good doujinshi and pieces of fanart that don't really have much of a plot, just a character being screwed. Would they be exceptions since the characters in question were already pre-established in other forms of media?

    @Yamato

Doujinshi have a scenario, it's just whether it's weak or strong. One of the differences is your proclivity to enjoy a style. Your brain is already distracted by the style and taking in all the skill it recognizes happening on the page, and therefore it's already more entertaining than it normally would be. It's the same as when anime seems so much better by default when subbed as well. Your mind is not only preoccupied by reading and considering the lines, it's also taking in different sensory perceptions and recognizing the language behind the language generated by the scenario and the context.

True, but not just any girlfriend. Discussions on whether or not a scenario adds to eroticism has nothing to do with a girl or a lack of one. The irony is that one who recognizes eroticism for what it is is one who pleases a girl a lot more because they recognize that sex is about more than just themselves. I don't speak of only drawn porn or games, but all sexuality in general.
