China Closes “Fake Museum”

China has closed an 88-million dollar museum and “patriotic education center” after the majority of its exhibits were found to be fakes, including such classic pieces as a Qing dynasty vase decorated with cartoon characters, despite the protests of curators who insist “at least half” the exhibits are genuine.
The Jibaozhai Museum, a 4-storey museum built in 2007 on a 4-hectare village site in China’s Hebei province for the sum of 540 million yuan, boasted 12 exhibition halls and was designated a “patriotic education centre” and tourist attraction by the government.
However, it transpires that most, if not all, of its 40,000 exhibits and “20 million yuan” collection were fakes.
These included items identified as having been made by a legendary emperor from 2700BC but signed in modern post-revolutionary simplified Chinese characters, porcelain using techniques not in existence when they were supposedly made, and a Qing dynasty vase decorated with modern cartoon characters.
Officials have launched an investigation and withdrawn its license, and the museum itself is now closed.
The owner protests that “even the gods cannot tell whether the exhibits are fake or not,” whilst the deputy curator maintains that “at least half” the exhibits are genuine, although he does concede “most of the exhibits were not verified by experts.”
The museum was rumbled after a Beijing writer visited and expressed his scepticism about the descriptions of the exhibits on Sina Weibo, prompting local authorities to investigate in response to the massive ridicule they suffered as a result.
The museum was already unpopular with local villagers as they received only 20,000 yuan each for their land after it was sold to developers for millions, but their objections were of course ignored. They allege it was used as part of a money-laundering scheme by the local magnate who built it.

I'm imagining vases with Haruhi and Madoka stickers on them now...
"Ancient Chinese gods"
indeed, lol..
Truly ahead of their time
Not fakes, just new history
Historical items made everyday.
-History Channel China-
Bet it says "Made in Japan"
I doubt it.
"Made in Japan" is now expensive.
I can just imagine the what's left of the smart people in China looking at these with giant billboards with blank faces...and then proceeding to go about their way
or Po the Kung Fu Panda. lol!
I bet they also got the male characters from Saiyuki like the monk Sanzo and others like the monkey king Gouku.
Better yet they added the girls from Ikki Tousen.
Don't you mean the ancient chinese deities Hanluhi and Madukuo the japanese copied? Everything in the world was copied from ancient chinese inventions after all!
" Everything in the world was copied from ancient chinese inventions after all!"
Chinese communist propaganda at its finest.
Oh, I forgot that China invented the Internet 5000 years ago.
Most of Chinese lose their morality because the Cultural Revolution, all in all, the C.ommunist Party makes Chinese people got worse.( Don't arrest me....)
Seems like someone's sacarsm detector is broken
saying this as you use chinese inventions.
Who lite up China again?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toilet_paper
A very useful invention. :D
at least, the ancient art of fireworks is still a strong national tradition.
I'm not sure that counts, if it isn't supposed to be fireworks...
LOL, it is supposed to be fireworks. Chinese invented explosives for ceremonial use, the westerners used them to invent firearms
if it booms, it counts
Since China makes so many fakes, it's only fair they have a museum of fakes which parodies itself.
Museum of Fakes
I think it would be able to sell millions of tickets
Parodying all the things in this world 'in fakes'
Made in China.
That's what you get for destroying cultural objects during the so called "culture revolution". You don't have to be a genius to predict that destroying your own history is not a smart move.
Communism ruined China like it has ruined every country.
This is actually endemic amongst their 'academic' circles: Falsification of history and origins to try and weakly claim they are the 'oldest' civilization, creating hoaxes about pottery pieces and 'ancient sites' that turn out to be fabricated.
Oldest human origin and culture belongs to western greeks/european explorers, africans, and mesopotamia (india too along genghis).
They even tried to claim Gengis Khan was 'chiense'. That's same as jews saying hitler was a 'jew' and thus their hero (because he looked more like them than other people), while it is well known the Great Khan HATED the han chinese with passion and made it his personal goal to rape and kill every single han chinese via genocide - he was only dissuaded when one of his advisors said it would be better to keep them as tax slaves.
Chinese 'historical claims': Get fucked by someone else, claim they are 'one of us' and say everything is 'chinese' when in fact not even their own language is original chinese anymore (the han chinese language was replaced by manchu-driven chinese dialect, which exists today as mandarin, while REAL chinese are considered 'dialects' today), not to mention their people who are just mongrels of every other nations around them.
So you're saying they're just like Americans, but in denial?
Protest? Haha, funny.
Wasn't it their goal for the museum to be closed soon after opening so that they can sell the land and facilities for dirt cheap?
Obviously the properties won't be sold to the locals who lost their land because of this fake museum.
I think that is the true story
A country that is famous for making knock-offs SHOULD have a museum dedicated to fakes. They could set up exhibits to everything from faux Reeboks to dubious Rolexes.
I'd probably actually enjoy a museum dedicated to fake Famicoms.
That Final Fantasy VII famiclone port would definitely deserve a spot.
So Snarf from Thundercats gave it away?
"And as this vase clearly depicts, Mickey Mouse is actually an ancient Chinese creation. And over here you will see this ancient Chinese helicopter that predates Leonardo da Vinci, as well as this majestic porcelain toilet dating as far back as 1500 BC."
They actually have museum authorities in China?
Yes, but he's actually just a wax statue stolen from an American museum wearing a t-shirt with a Chinese flag on it. No one seems to have noticed yet.
Oh look, China being China!
Unfortunately, museums in the US regularly display replica items. The original is kept in climate controlled archive, only to be seen by special permission.
Almost all dinosaur exhibits are not only replicas, missing bones are made by guessing what it would have looked like. Any standing fossil is a fibre-glass reproduction, as stone is too brittle and heavy to mount.
Several Stradivarius violins in museums are fakes, as well as period furniture. Curators, no matter how educated or pompous, are fooled into buying scams. The narcissism and megalomania that most curators are afflicted with, would never allow them to admit a forgery or fake. It's all about funding $$!
No one is saying replica is a forgery, if they state it so. What's being fucked here is their claim that all of their displays are 'authentic' and 'real'.
Museums rarely, if ever state this exhibit is a replica.
Either fake or replica, you never get to see the real item.
"Neither art historians nor scientists have been able to completely resolve the issue of the Getty Museum kouros statue's authenticity."
"The Rijksmuseum, Netherlands, more noted as a repository for 17th century Dutch paintings, announced last month it had had its plum-sized "moon" rock tested, only to discover it was a piece of petrified wood, possibly from Arizona."
"Most museum collections contain a certain number of forgeries, and the collections of the Kelsey Museum of Archeology are no exception. Over the almost one hundred years of museum collecting history, various objects of dubious authenticity have found their way into the collections."
"In 1932, a New York retail magnate bequeathed a trove of artwork to the Brooklyn Museum, but after a series of recent high-tech inspections, many of the donations turned out to be fake. And because of the benefactor's will, the museum can't even throw them out."
Just Google "museum fakes" and you'll find so many undeclared fakes, replicas, and forgeries throughout the worlds museum.
It's a private museum full of trollish works. They are more like genuine modern creations than old collections.

Check here, the items are very interesting actually. Even better if you can read Chinese.
some of those things are obviously fake or their ancestors were bad artists.
Well whats so surprising about this? isnt it half china fake and stolen goods and ideas?
right, they steal the rocket and silk too. (SARCASM MODE ON)
Of course they did.
They stole them from the silkworms.
your point being..?
OMG that is hilarious. (SARCASM MODE ON)
At some point you have to stop coasting on past achievements and live in the now.
Now China is a civilization of exploding trash, fakery, and cooking oil made from sewage.
If Confucious were alive today he would think China sucked.
I don't know why this was closed. Personally I think it's awesome. Exhibits of ancient vases scribbled with Haruhi or Kirino or whatever would have become a holy place of pilgrimage for otaku all over the world, contributing to the local economy. Where is the Chinese entrepreneurial spirit when you need it?
they're building one in a more accessible province so the Japanese don't have to spend too much time travelling.
